Rockstar recently announced Patch 1.0.6.0 to the PC version, changelog:
Rockstar Games Social Club
+ Remove Rockstar Games Social Club application
+ Separate RGSC application no longer required to launch game
+ Social Club login now occurs during the launch process

Shadows
+ A new, less memory-intensive, and better-looking scalable shadow solution has been implemented
+ Enhanced Night Shadows added with user-selectable level of detail (replaces Shadow Density)

Performance
+ Rendering optimizations have been made to improve performance, particularly when enabling shadows
+ User-configurable graphics settings have been added for shadow control
+ Improved memory management

Multiplayer
+ Enhanced security to isolate users from cheaters and hackers

Episodic Content
+ Provide in-game support to purchase "The Lost and Damned" and "The Ballad of Gay Tony" (Not available in Russian/Japanese Versions)

Bug Fixes
+ Vehicle shadows re-enabled between 8pm and 6am
+ Fix floating street textures
+ Pedestrians in vehicles appear further out from the player to allow for long range sniping
+ The Moon has been implemented with simulated lunar phases
+ Fixed garbled text in Japanese Multiplayer menus
+ "RESC 10" error fix for specific hardware configurations"

Some very good news in here, especially better looking shadows and (hopefully much) improved performance.

I guess this will release along with Episodes from Liberty city, which comes out for PC and PS3 on April 16.

Ah sounds good... maybe it will motivate me to play it again.

Bought it during the holiday sales, haven't installed yet :|.

Sold. I'll buy this when I get paid. The rest of the improvements sound stellar too.

Yeah that updated it on the 13th but I haven't tried it out yet. Hope it's as promising as it sounds. So since they took away the Social Club crap does the multiplayer not work now? I didn't even use it, but I don't know how it all works.

it's still shit, don't buy it.

I tried out the patch, and it runs slightly better now with shadows on high(which still looks pretty good with the update).

Nah, it uses GfWL for multiplayer. RGSC was for... you know, I don't know what it was for. Leaderboards or some other useless crap.

More news:

GTAIV: EFLC now has Securom with a 15 install limit.
It has SecuROM, and in a worse way than GTA IV had: EFLC also uses DFA (Data File Activation) which encrypts 90% of the game's data files, making them unable to be read or altered.

The social club removal only removes the social club as a standalone program. It's now integrated into the GTA4 launcher. You still have to log in to play. Eh.

What video card do you have and kind of performance are you getting?

EFLC? what's that?

DFA encryption, will this make it so you can't mod the game, or what's this all about? God damn it. What did they do, make it so you have to crack the game in order to enjoy it?

What video card do you have and kind of performance are you getting?

Radeon HD 5850, Core i7-860 2.8GHz, Windows 7

It usually never drops below 25FPS with everything on high except view distance 50, water high(not very high), and shadows high.

Damn. I heard you can get 60fps with a single card. Is your video 512MB or something? I guess they don't make 512MB versions. Well, something 'aint right. I think the guy who said that had 1.5 or 2GB single card, but I don't remember.

Go look at benchmarks and you'll find that the extra 1gb of ram makes no difference unless you are over 1920x1200 resolution. Doesn't even make a difference in GTA IV. So unless your running a resolution over 1920x1200, or a multi monitor setup, get a 1gb version.
 I don't know. Never mind that, have a look:

5850 1GB @ 61.75 fps (benchmark link).

What resolution are you running?

I love how long it took for them to get the Moon properly working in the PC version.

...when it comes to the PC version, I'd think coding in a proper moon was the least of its problems.

Social club isn't in the episodes at all, not even integrated like in GTAIV. Been playing the lost and damned today, been fun. Just GTAIV with new characters. Some fun new weapons (like the grenade launcher).

Great patch and update for the PC version. Rockstar took their bloody time. After another price drop this is a must buy.

1920*1080

The built-in benchmark of GTA IV sucks, it is in a non-hardware-intensive part of the game and the framerate is usually half of what you get in the benchmark.

True, I was just poking fun at what an incomplete piece of software the PC gamers originally got compared to the console versions.

I love the game as well as the DLC but this patch is just utter shit. You still have to log into Social Club. I don't know what they did but now my framerate drops down to ridiculous lows whenever i am near by water or fly over it. I never had any actual performance issues before this patch. Rockstar needs to get their shit together with these patches.

I'm having the same lower FPS problems as TwwIX, my game used to run fine for the most part - good enough FPS to enjoy the game, not I'm constantly stuck around 20 or lower frames per second, which isn't cool Rockstar, I was excited to see how much smoother this would make the game run, not how much it would **** my game up.

Considering there are many GPU intensive graphical improvements, will lowering your graphics settings compensate?

I posted it improved a few days ago, but I only tried out for a few seconds - it also got far worse for me.
I have to play with all medium(including draw/view distance) now to get decent framerates, or I can put everything on high with shadows completely off.

I got the game with it was a fiver the other day. Plays fine on my PC, everything high, with draw distance at 75, detail distance at 50 and car density at 100. Stays around 35FPS constantly, can dip below 30 but thats usually only for a few seconds. Happy with it :)
