PC Gamer (US) review of Quake 4 in a word: OUCH!!!

I'll pass on this one ...QW : ET is leagues ahead of it in concept alone

:-\ quake 4 cant suck.. 1/2/3 owned :(

Quake 1 and 2 were awesome, but when Half-life came out, it made Quake 3 look like a technology demo. Remember the term Quake-killer?

Yeah, or perhaps it's because PCGUK is widely regarded as the better magazine. You don't have to feel so insecure about your precious country.

Calm down, nobody dissed the Xbox360, no reason to snap.

Ouch. I seriously can't believe the ****ed up one of the coolest FPS series ever.

First Doom, now Quake. This makes Sparta a sad panda :(

maybe this will spark some actual original ideas in the industry instead of milking the same damn franchises

The rest of the industry has been advancing in gameplay/presentation/story over the years (even if they make a lot of sequels)... whereas id Software games all tend to use the same formula but with fancy new graphics. Their excuse about the mindlessness of their early games was that the technology was limiting their vision. Some people knew this was false because other developers were able to make interesting FPS games... Marathon being an example of one. The suspicions grew when id Software almost completely dropped the SP from Quake 3. Now, it's blatantly obvious that it actually wasn't the technology that was holding them back... it was just a lack of talent/imagination in those aspects. I hope John Carmack still does at least one more engine (he's quite good at that)... but I've come to expect the in-house game(s) that uses each new engine to be glorified tech demo. So, I'm no longer disappointed.

Now, if Quake Wars bombs I'll be very disappointed... because I'm expecting big things after the first Enemy Territory.

Lol omg i cant belive that review, sounds like ID didnt pay them well, they speak about quak4 like its the crap game of 2005 or something that score is really nothing they should be proud about.

Haha, Funny. Not.
Thought it was Raven making the game.

Raven is the game's developer while id is the game's executive producer. How much control over content, etc. that id actually had is something that I'm not sure about.

Doom 3: No gameplay changes since the first Doom except for the graphics.
I'll just assume you havent played the doom games.

As for this, I have the game preordered and still await it. It never claimed to be a smart shooter or anything, it was made to be a Quake 2 follow up and Quake 2 was essentially a mindless action game. If people expected more thats really their own fault for thinking the series was suddenly going to change into something it has never been.

As for people saying ID has lost it....I really must say thats complete rubbish. Even if people didnt like doom 3 thats all but ONE game. Quake 3 before that was a huge release and did alot for online gaming especially (UT followed not long after..). ID's games may not be your thing and so be it, but with the exception of doom each one has been a classic and received rave reviews, and by not including Doom I'm completly bypassing the fact Doom was actually one of the top commercial successes of last year and received many glorious reviews. It wasnt everyones cup of tea but big deal, alot of people liked it. All that and the fact ID didnt make this (Q4) game anyhow.

Infact some of the criticisms it got were a bit lame. No bots? Quake multiplayer was NEVER (not even with Q3) intended to be a single player affair (in regards to deathmatch, obviously Q1 and Q2 had singleplayer stories and Q3 had some pseudo SP). Alot of other top games dont have bots either. Maybe the fact they are reviewing before anyone else has the game has caused a problem, they had noone to play with...I dunno. As for the length of Q4, doesnt sound any shorter than HL2 was and that was still a great game. Anyway I hope Quake 4 is fun, I see no reason to actually want games to fail. In any event I'll be getting Fear the same day so I'll be happy for some time \m/

Edit: game informer or something gave it 87.5 btw http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/531883.asp?q=Quake 4

OMG 70% ????????

nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

wait for more review I will

Okay, it had quite a few changes. First, in the beginning you didn't start with any weapons. Having to use your flashlight to look around every corner, the whole Soulcube thing. But RoE really implemented all those changes and turned out better than the original.

Here's to a Q4 expansion that might turn out better than the actual game.

I hope valve dont **** up like id

Exactly what I was thinking Kare Bear :O

Please, please, please don't follow this trend with Half Life 3...

However, I will reserve judgement on Q4 till it's release. Even if it is a failure, I still regularly play Q3, so I'm not all that worried.

Was kinda looking forward to the single player tho :( Quake 2 was a great single player game, although the 2 Half Life's are unbeatable in that aspect.

Aye, there's one more major release of Half-Life left in their I.P. after that things get a bit stagnant. id have 3 major I.P's on the go Quake, DooM and Wolfenstein, all are pretty much the same game with different graphics so things went that way a long time ago over at id.

I don't remember any. Where?
Was it in the expansion packs? I don't remember any either one of those.

Thus my wink. I know if he 'never played' quake II i'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been easy for him to pin-point the only two exact differences, just a guess though.

Everyone ****s up eventually. It's inevitable. You can only stay a creative superpower for a certain period of time, when you've made millions of dollars and your inspiration is all used up that's the end of the line and you have to start making rubbish.

Metallica experienced it, George Lucas experience, iD has experienced it, Valve will experience it.

As for 70% i knew this would be the case as soon as Raven were announced as the developer. To me all their games are very run of the mill.

why are you quoting me?, I didnt say that (check my post)

sorry, it was a mistake. Wasn't referring to you though. I was a little tired when I made that post.

I knew it was terrible after I saw a trailer for it. The story sounds silly enough as it is.

So they've Doom 3'd the Quake series :/

Why?

These games were so good becuase of their simplicity - just run and shoot and laugh manically at the gibbed body parts. Make the bad guys tough, fast, challenging and numerous. If they want to make a horror game (i'm looking at you Doom 3), or start adding complexities and story where it just isn't needed, then start a new series of games - don't ruin what was decent about the originals.

R.I.P Doom & Quake

Quake 4: Worst Fps Ever!!!!

LOOK! Someone agrees with you!

Until very recently, players would have to wait until a game was out so they could buy it and play it to discover if it's any good. Not anymore; thanks to the power of the interweb, we now have the ability to know, in advance, if a game will suck or not, with over 100% accuracy. By simply reading posts made on an internet website by random people prior to a game release, we can already not only predict but know what a game will be like.

First of all, there's the obvious mention that Q4 got 70% on a recent PC Gamer review. That, my friends, is reason alone to cancel your preorder and go play The Movies instead. You should always believe the word of a magazine if they have the words "PC" and "Gamer" on their name; this implies their reviewers are always hardcore progamers, just like you.

:p

Funnay read. Still not buying it tho. I am not into run 'n' gun fps's like Quake and Doom. FEAR is what I am waiting for.

it's funny because that's exactly what FEAR is, except with less enemies and even more boring environments

Why is FEAR getting higher reviews? I heard it's short, and full of the same enemies and the gameplay stays the same.

It has really good AI which makes the combat a little less repetitive than it would normally be. As for the ratings, in PCGamer's case it's the usual "we'll give you a great review if you give us the world exclusive first review" like they did with Doom 3.

Haha, I was going to say the exact same thing.

FEAR: Most overrated game of the year so far.

It's quite funny when you notice trends for specific games. The trend on the net just now is that FEAR is one of the best FPS in ages, and that Doom 3 sucks because it's dark and linear. Hmm.

R.I.P Doom & Quake

the trouble with making simplistic fps games now is that its been done and the techology is there to make something more complicated and interesting.

back in the Doom1+2 and early Quake days, fps games were a new type of game and simplicity was actually a good thing since everyone was just getting accustomed to fps games...

then along game some game called Half Life and changed everything in the way fps games were meant to be played.
just can't get away with creating mindless shooters anymore..gotta add interesting scenerios to gain gamers' attention and hold onto that attention.
