hey, i think this is pretty important, could we get this stickied?

If you are like me, every time you see an article like this one, where the author claims that video games are training our nations youth to kill you get angry. The media seems intent on perpetuating the myth that gamers are ticking time bombs just waiting to go off. I know for a fact that gamers are good people. I have had the opportunity on multiple occasions to meet hundreds of you at conventions all over the country. We are just regular people who happen to love video games.

With that in mind we have put together a little something we like to call “Child’s Play”. Penny Arcade is working with the Seattle Children’s Hospital and Amazon.com to make this Christmas really special for a lot of very sick kids. With the help of the Children’s Hospital we have created an Amazon Wish List for the kids. It’s full of video games, movies and toys. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape and just having a Game Boy would really raise their spirits.

Please take some time to browse the Wish List. Maybe all you can afford is a package of batteries or maybe you want to go in with your entire office and get the kids a GameCube. Every single contribution will help out the Children’s Hospital and the 190,000 kids they treat each year.

All the toys and games will be delivered to us and we will in turn deliver them to the Children’s Hospital. As soon as the toys start arriving I’ll set up a web site and post as many pictures as I can. We will be making a trip over to one of the hospitals next week and we’ll bring you back stories from some of the kids along with more pictures.

Penny Arcade has a readership of something like 150,000 gamers across the world. We are arguably the largest community of gamers on the internet. The important word there being community. This isn’t IGN, this isn’t Gamespy, we are not a faceless corporation, you are not just a number tracked by a database and then relayed to hungry advertisers. You guys have proven yourselves to be a powerful force when stirred into action. Here is your opportunity to use that power to do some real good.

Let’s give these kids the Christmas that they deserve and let’s give the news papers a different kind of story to write about gamers.

***UPDATE***

A few of you have asked some good questions so I wanted to make an update.

-The hospital has asked that the items not be wrapped. It just generates a lot of waste that costs money to get rid of.

-Don’t worry about this news post slipping off the front page tomorrow. This is probably the most important thing we’ve ever done and we plan on keeping it on the front page through Christmas.

-We will be adjusting the numbers on many of the items and as things get purchased we will be adding more.

-Some of you have asked if you can simply donate money towards the purchase of toys for the kids. Since we no longer have a Club PA Tycho and I have decided to use that PayPal account for Child’s Play. If you would like to make a donation you can now do so right here.

-If you would rather purchase the games or toys someplace else you are welcome to do so. Simply send them to the address listed below.

ATTN: Brad Walker
18303 Bothell Everett Hwy
Suite 140
Mill Creek, Wa 98012

-We cannot actually accept used games or toys for this particular event. However, we appreciate so many of you offering your used systems and whatnot. We’d ask that you please hang onto those for right now. This is just the first tiny baby step for Child’s Play. We may very well be calling on you again in the future and at that point used games might be just what we need.

-Please be mindful of the shipping dates when you’re purchasing items from the wishlist in order to make sure that they get to the kids on time. We’d like to receive everything by December 20th.

-Some people have mentioned that when trying to purchase an item from the wish list, Amazon occasionally loses the shipping address and defaults to your own address. If this happens, please just use the address posted above.

from Penny-Arcade

this is a great cause IMHO and i think it would be really nice if those of you who can help out, do help out and make this a merry christmas for the children.

Happy Holidays.

i wrote a nasty letter to this guy who wrote that article... wanna read it? :
I'm sorry, but there is only 1 game that lets you urinate on dead bodies... and that's POSTAL 2. Video games about historical events are violent... like WWII shooters... are they going to teach children to be like Hitler? Or maybe teach them who Hitler was! And why WWII was fought! Now, I do agree with you on 1 point... the stores don't enforce the ratings policy, they just want money... but some of the games are rated "M" just because there is blood on the walls every once in a while! What if YOU are the cop fighting bad-guys... is that teaching you how to become a mass-murderer? And teach you "how to lead a war"? I mean look at all the comments on that were made on that article! They all said that what you said was BS! I must admit, some games do let people vent the socio-path within them... but not all! The ERSB knows what games are good... and what games are bad... they can do thier job. And another thing, how do a serial killer and video games relate? Did he every say "I got the idea from video games?" and besides, when he was a kid all he had was pong... IS PONG VIOLENT TO??? 1 more thing and then i'm done... YOU DO NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO JUDGE VIDEO GAMES AND THE PEOPLE WHO PLAY THEM! WE ARE JUST LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE FUN IN A DIFFERENT WORLD! When you become a gamer... then you can judge yourself, but not every body else... good-bye.

1) Please give generously to Child's Play. Gabe and Tycho are doing a really great thing here.

2) :flame: The guy who wrote that is about to recieve some angry e-mail. I encourage everybody who is offended (i.e. everyone here) to complain about this. Complain to those mums too! And to annoy/scare people who belive that pile of crud, go buy a 'I Play Violent Games' T-Shirt. I cant remember who sells them but it was definetly an online store. I want one.

No, DO NOT send an angry email/letter that will just help them. Possibly a sarcastic letter maybe.....:)

+ I want one of those t-shirts!!

theres probably others as well.

If anyone emails the guy can you think your emails through first otherwise you just make us look like total morons.

FFS

When will people understand that games doesn't disturb children more than watching the 10 o clock news... Every game I know is alot more quiet and easy going than any non-gamer.

FFS!

what a wanker.

anyway i think the penny arcade is a great idea, ill be buying some xbox games for them (i live in the seattle area).

Gh0st you N00B! PS2 RULZ wif it's 233 MHZ proccessor and sleek black case!!!!!!

Well, I'd say Gamecube, personally.:p

It's weird. This is one of the few things I've ever encountered online that is, in a strange way, noble.

Onya, Penny Arcade!

I scooped mine for what was equivalent to about $40 american.:p

But that's not the topic of this thread.

NOOBS! PS2 IS JAPANESE SO IT RULZ, JUST LIKE THIER HENTAI!!!

Err... the Gamecube is Japanese too...

Now please stop spamming, dude.

On topic: How much would all you guys be willing to spend on this?

I'm going to donate something, somehow....

And I agree with D33, don't email people who write bad articles about us gamers... just donate to things like Child's Play :)

LOL

Anyone else notice how the dumbass that wrote that article doesn't even have writing talent?

He wrote that entire article in IBC (Intro Body Conclusion) format. The way I learned in 7th grade.

It even has the thesis at the top..repeated in the conclusion...the POC (points of coherence or something) points at the top reflecting what the next 3 body paragraphs will be talking about. He uses "First," "Second," and "Finally," to start off each of his body paragraphs.

This guy's opinion is lame to begin with... but it makes me laugh at how he isn't even a good writer...

Or even a writer (if I'm correct) for HeraldNet...notice under his name "Special to the Herald." All the other regular writers have "Herald Writer" as their title.

When I get some $$$ on my hands.. I'll donate to that Penny Arcade thing. It's probably the best cause I've seen involving video games..

that writer is a fool. He proberly onbly wrote it because he lost at counter-strike. :dozey:

Yes video games contain violence, but they also stimulate the mind, take the series resident evil. Gory no? but it contains a large number of mind stimulating puzzles and other activities.

take advance wars, the turn based statagy game, also requires intellegence and would help children develop that in the same way as say chess.

__

Give children video games dammit! :cheese:

I just thought of this:

If you think along his lines... chess could teach children how to strategically assassinate a world leader... say... a king?

I've been mentioning the PA donations to friends since I saw it.
And they've already raised over $8,000 worth of stuff in less than a day. I have to give them props.

quoting from that article:
"The youngsters who hold the joysticks and sit at the keyboards hold the guns and axes. Young players practice cutting heads off. They rehearse shooting police officers and urinating on them."

what!! where is he getting this stuff from. Is he saying that by pointing your mouse and clicking it, you magically acquire all the skills needed to aim a gun and shoot it?? They practice cutting heads off? So by moving my mouse and clicking it I now know how to take a weapon and chop someone's head off, because apparently I have gained the strength and skills to accomplish such a violent feat through my amazing mouse-moving-and-clicking skills! I can't believe he wrote this stuff.

*looks around for scary moderators:cheese: *

there will always be idiots who argue against video games, its proberly just some old fogey who cant get to grips with this stuff.

Or some nerd who loses to all his mates at everything.

That is an awesome thing for PA to do.
Maybe someone can post this on the front page? Spread the word as much as possible!

I love the boys over at PA, and i hate that asshole who wrote that thing about video games and violence.

At least the majority of people who are discussing that article on the site it was posted are totally against what the article had to say.

Heh, I NEEDED THAT ARTICLE THREE DAYS AGO!!!

sheesh. you know how hard it was finding GOOD opposition for my reaserch paper on this subject? (I need to state BOTH sides of the argument)

For those interested, I've put up my paper here, comments welcome, I'm turning it in on the 1st...
(Its about 10 pages long, excluding sources, I started with the opposition then tore it apart for the rest of the paper)

http://www.b5-blender.com/temp/violenceinvideogames.htm

Must admit, I was surprised how HARD it was to find opposition I could use, thousands of sites against video games, and NONE had research to back it up. Why? Because NO reaserch has EVER linked violence to video games! Sheesh...

BTW, again, ALL comments on my paper are welcome. As I said I'm turning it in on monday....

retard he said research not lawsuits. there 2 completely different things!

Since when have "violent" (i.e., you get to use something that looks like a weapon and blow stuff up) video games made people violent? Since when have drugs cured hyperactivity in small kids? And since when did the Teletubbies made people homosexual???

I wanna kill my teachers with my sword of maming +2, and blow up the bullies with a plasma rifle... Oooh, sure. I'm violent.

News can be so stupid sometimes! It's an individual who's violent, it's an individual who's got a problem with f*cking anything that walks, and it's just a little kid! Kids are hyper, and have the attention span of five seconds. Deal with it!

Of course, the above flame was directed towards people who actually believe in that cram. Grrrr...

I don't think the guy was saying violent video games make us violent I think he was saying it makes children under the age of 12 violent. I know for a fact that games like RTCW, SOF, Max Pain and HL don't make small children violent but they do have unsuitable content which a small child shouldn't see. So they shouldn't be playing them anyaway, regardless of whether or not they make them more violent.

Of course he isn't talking about those games he's talking about GTA and Postal 2. I don't think GTA will have any effect on anyone over the age of 8 appart from maby teaching them what a prostitute is, under it though there could be problems because children that young have trouble telling what is real and what isn't (thats why little kids jumped off roof tops thinking they had pokemon powers). I havn't played Postal 2 but i geuss it's only suitable for over 15's if it's really that bad, but quit frankly I think the Texas Chainsaw masicare (the original) would do more damage to a child than any computer game, even though your "spectateing".

If you want to argue with someone about this go and give the guy that said "AA is like giveing every 16 year old in America an M16" some lip, what a moron .

If its anything like AA it would be perfectly safe, as it would be jaming every other shot. :cheese:

Almost everybody has missed the point entirely. I've seen way too many articles claiming that my favourite hobby will turn me into a merciless killer to get worked up about another one, especially when the author exhibits Daily Mail-esque talent.

The real point of that post on Penny Arcade is to give those kids a christmas they'll never forget.

So go on. Do it. I know I'm going to chip-in come payday.

Precisely.

Stop arguing with this guy about how wrong he is, and just give these children the best christmas ever... and the world a reason to like gamers.. because we are good people

yeah there's a difference between being a good person and just haveing a conscience thats so bad you can't ignore it.
