My head is now the HL2 logo (check out the attached picture).

Notes: I'm wearing my friend's Scorpion avatar. The game is called Second Life (if you want a link, PM me, I don't wanna break the rules that I've never read, and accidentally advertise)

Same here was beta, too slow and glitchy and laggy for me though.

Seeing as how you're all talking about Second Life rather than the picture, I guess I'll update you guys on some news.

Since it went live, Second Life has gone through small upgrades, but an upcomming update is going to be a major overhaul on the graphics, server performance, and adding many new things to the game. Past that update, the UI will be given an upgrade to the point where the user can change it themselves.

Er... yeah so do you think I did a good job with the logo? :D *stops advertising*

Join Second Life and I'll give you a tutorial!

Well, since the thread got moved to an off-topic forum, I guess I might as well spill the goods!

www.secondlife.com is a MMOG, not MMORPG because RPing is really not required. You live your life in SL (second life) any way you want. There are a million things you can do, but off the top of my head the largest and by far coolest are the following:

Building, using a dozen main primitives you can build just about anything you want in SL. The HL2 logo being a prime example! There are people who have built castles, mansions, small houses, cabins, casinos, and these are just places you can live, imagine everything else! I created a box that duplicates the visual effect of the construct from "the matrix" where you see off into forever not knowing where the walls are. People have made jet-packs, pets, toys, weapons, oy vey the list goes on too long!

Scripting, using a language built from the ground up, LSL (Linden Scripting Language, the company which owns the game is called Linden Labs) is coded into script objects which can then be placed into any objects in the world, making that object do somthing. Seriously, in the next giant version (moving from v1.0 to v1.1) there's major upgrades to the already huge language. You can script pretty much ANYTHING you want, there are no limits. You think it, you can probably make it in Second Life.

Avatar customization is through the roof. Let's put it this way. You can create what you look like in real life, you can create any celebrity, you can create your grandpa or your son, you can create fictional cartoon characters, you can create a sasquatch, ANYTHING. The fact that you can attach objects to your body means you can seriously be whatever you want to be (I attached that HL2 logo to my face, representing what I constantly stare at all day and will stare at all day when the game is released)

Physics, using Havok 1, are awesome. The only limit on physics is that you can't have extremely large objects crashing all over the place, that's about the only limit. When SL gets upgraded to v1.2 (after the upcomming v1.1) Hovok 2 (which HL2 uses) will be put into place and the precision and non-lagginess of physics will greatly increase. So if you want HL2 just to play around in a physical sandbox, I suggest you join Second Life, cuz we already got a place dedicated to what you want (known as the "Sandbox Simulator")

The big thing about Second Life other than those is the social aspect of the game. The regular players are all extremely kind to newcommers, people are always there to help you and never to put you down (unless you really deserve it).

One last bit, you have to be 18 years of age or older, since there is mature content in the game (yes, naked people and dirty pictures are abound, free expression is everywhere in second life) and to check age they require you give a CC# for the 7 day trial.

*whew* Hope I actually got someone to join. (Oh yeah, I know this sounds bad but refer "Dave Zeeman" if you do actually join) If you come in-game, I can show you how I made the HL2 logo

That sounds very cool! The only things that give me pause are having to learn another scripting language and the 7 day trial. How much does it cost?

Nevermind.. here it is:

11. What is the pricing for Second Life?

You can purchase Second Life memberships in increments ranging from monthly to yearly to lifetime. The pricing is as follows:
Monthly Membership: $14.95 per month
Quarterly Membership: $39.95 per 3 months (Save 10%)
Annual Membership: $134.95 per 12 months (Save 25%)
Lifetime Membership: $225 Lifetime (limited Lifetime Memberships available)

Awesome concept, looks kinda like "There", but, man, they're proud of it, aren't they? $14.95 a month?! All these "revenue stream services" are nice, but there's a limit. I'll think I'll pass...

The scripting language is extremely easy to learn, nothing too hard compared to other programming languages, since it's really a bunch of others mushed into one single simple use. It's not like command line, since you use objects as a script's main medium, which makes it much easier to learn/use.

The prices are like any other MMORPG, what are you expecting? PLUS you have to add to it the fact that you buy no boxed product, you only pay subscription fees, and you download a 14MB client and the entire game streams to you over broadband. Yeah, that's the thing, no using slow connections, you need 100kbit or higher connection (ISDN is good, 56k BAAAD, cable = ownage, anything higher is just about the same performance as cable).

And the thing that separates this from "there" is that you own what you create in Second Life. If you try to create anything for There, the company automatically owns it (just read their EULA, it's extremely bad for artists), so nothing can really be YOURS. Plus there's a ton of things in There that you can't customize that you can in SL (objects, land, avatars, physics/scripting) Just don't compare SL to There, cuz There pales in such a comparison..

Like I was saying, it looks impressive... but I was a beta tester in There and they're offering like $29.95 Lifetime Membership with upgrades...

It's this whole "gee, $9.95 (or $14.95) ain't that much - let's get it" mentality people are thinking we need to run to that upsets me. I mean, I think any MMOG shouldn't be more than $4.95/month. Tops.

can me and technohippychic get stoned in second life??

personally things like this are freaky, yes they're cool, but does it disturb anyone else that this could replace a persons real life? that could lead to problems in life, just dont get too into it bud :)

I don't like signing up for something that should be used for entertainment, you should buy it at the stores and that should be the end of paying.

Hell, that might be worth it ;)

, just dont get too into it bud :)

I'm going to be waay too into HL2 for a while... :)

Honestly, I hate mmorpgs myself. This is completely different from anything that ever came along, so I had to buy it.

Oh yeah, and beta testers got lifetime membership for $160 and when you get into the way the game works enough, you know it's worth it.

The game isn't geared for FPSers or Strategists anyways, it's really for people who aren't normally gamers but love the social aspect of online communities, so you won't really be missed.

Dude, I mean no offense. It just seems pricey to me. Maybe I should give the trial a try - it's true I haven't really experienced it yet...

can you build weapons? go on a rampage? fly? the possiblities sounds really great, i might even try the trial, but it sounds like one of those games where they're gonna find an asian dead in an internet cafe from playing for a week without eating and such, heh.

in summation, the internet is a cradle of filth and corruption.

Yes, second life is an EXPERIENCE, so experience it at the very least! You may see that the price is worth it, you may not. It really is a niche game, sorry to get so defensive!

uh...weapons? rampage? flying? possible?

Weapons can be found all over, health only works over land which allows death, rampage is possible but usually doesn't happen since it's a close knit community, so if you want a war, you could probably just plan one, otherwise, expect abuse reports against your trial-ass ;). There is a specific sim used for rampages though, you could go there to do that. Flying is the main form of transportation, since it's free, fast, and you do it by pressing the F key.

sounds awesome, but you need a credit card to do the trial lol.

Yes, if there was no credit card, i would try the trial. thats why i can never play mmorpgs, me = 0 credit cards, also, me = not trust givin credit cards out.

CC# is to check age, the same way you need a CC# to get into porn sites, except Second Life doesn't steal your money, since you can sue f that sort of thing.

Flying is one of the coolest things in the game. You simply press 'f' key, and you lift up into the air and hover; as you move up your arms fall down a bit, if you hover down your arms open a bit, moving in horizontal directions your body leans over. You basically look like a god/goddess, and have the power to create *anything* at all including your own clothing/etc. You can go to first person mode at any time, too - easier for me to fly/navigate that way d/t years of fps games.

btw Dave, I am known as Solitaire Guillaume in SL, but my account is inactive atm; when I get some cash going again I will rejoin.

lol a few problems : price, the fact that the majority of people here are under 18, it sounds like its can get boring quick, the sims.

edit damn this forum and its smileys

SL is far from being The Sims and it's pretty much impossible to get boring fast (which completely describes The Sims)

FYI my name is Dave Zeeman in the game, so if you knew me/know me lemme know who you are :cheese:
