Physics - slight spoiler

I was really impresssed on the whole by the physics in this game as far as can be expected at this moment in time. However, there was one thing that jumped right out at me which I thought could have been better. On first analysis the bouyancy aspect of items floating on the water looked superb. That was until I got to the physics puzzle in water hazzard where you had to use the barrels to tip the 'ski jump' so you could get the fan boat over the obstacle. Swimming down with a 50 gallon drum full of air would simply be impossible, yet the physics engine lets you. It spoilt the illusion for me (just a tiny amount) that the items were modelled on real world physics. Did anyone else spot anything out of the ordinary (forgeting large swinging containers not demolishing buildings, which just isn't possible at this moment in time)?

It would be impossible for normal Gordon Freeman, yes. In fact so would the entire game.

Your forgetting one thing, though.

The hazard suit! Superhuman strength is just but one of it's functions.

well if he was stong enough to do that, he would easily be able to throw a cinder block more than 2 feet. He would be able to kill a combine with ease with something like cinder block.

the suit also makes y ou a lot heavier and thus denser

you fellas sure about that?

the hazardous environment suit allows gordon to survive in otherwise deadly environments... I doubt it would really be heavy / imbune him with strength.

i heard the suit makes your breakfast for you
only after you pick up the toaster oven expansion in nova prospekt.

I installed a TV in mine, had Breens voice ringing in my ears even at night.

The suit augments his muscles. He doesn't move, the suit does, why do you think sprinting drains power from the suit? Also, in HL1, on the hazard course, the hologram tells you to do stuff that 'will make the suit jump/duck'. So he can't do it, the suit can.

Gordon freeman, gordon freeman, he can do what a HEV suit can. wade through radiation, sprint like a cheetah, Watch out! Here comes the Gordon freeman.

Nah, you know thay part where you have to collect the car batteries? They aren't batteries they are toasters.

How do we know that Gordon isn't the Hulk in disguise? I mean how could Alyx resist that huge hunk of rippling green muscle?

well, there are lots of "out of the ordinary" in HL2 since its only a game.

Ruined the whole game for me.
At that point I turned half life 2 off, uninstalled it, snapped the disk in half and got my steam account banned, just to make sure I wouldn't be able to play it again in the future.

Amazing, same here

technically not. 2 pounds of feathers floats but not 1/2 a lb. of lead rite?

Put the feathers in an air-tight plastic bag, and they wouldn't float.

[/random thought]

See now, if you had the gravity gun at that point in the game, it might be a little more explainable. But you don't, so I've got no idea, nice work pointing something like this out.

most unrealistic part of the game: no recoil from using the gravity gun. but who cares? it was still fun.

it's a zero point energy field = no recoil.

it is a friggin game ffs, some reality had to be sacrificed to make the gameplay better...

Idiot. :sniper:

I would say, you could plot it in, that under different atmospheres (such as underwater), the HEV automatically uses a muscle augmenting mesh-based system to retain the strength one would have in its default environment (Zone 3: Earth, sea level atmosphere) :)

hehe, you could also say, that the HEV always boosts strength, but the reason he cant throw very far is because the suit doesnt alter style and gordon throws things very "girlishly"

It's all in the limp wrist! :p

Yes, it's true that thats unrealistic, but keep ion mind that Valve
could have made 50 pounds of upward force when you swim with those barrels, but they chose not to. Why? Because not only would it be "realistic", it also would be insanely hard, frustrating, and a waste of time. It's a known fact in games that fun > realism, and I'm glad Valve chose to make it fun.

Realism is only good when it's fun... That means real physics and unreal everything else = P.
