I actually bought that whole set (and a blue set of basix, the floor tom you can see, it's got 2 toms a bass and a snare and a kick with it) for $300 CDN.

You just gotta know how to haggle like a pro like I can.

We have cliff drives and motorbike races. I think there's switchbacks going down the cliff to a couple of the beaches too.
 
Oh yeah, you have those insane road races. Bunch of lunatics! Quite a spectacle though, I'd like to come and watch the NW200 at some point.

I'm sure it's quite beautiful, although according to my friend who lived in Belfast for a couple of years it rains almost constantly, especially in the summer. That would drive me nuts. It rains enough down here.
 
It's pretty decent in the summer most of the time.

Also the roads the NW200 goes along are amazing, smoothest most pristine tarmac I've ever seen :p

I suppose it's not really a weekend trip as it's so far north from here. Definitely one to check out sooner or later. Next year I want to do Spain though...and Morocco if I'm feeling flush. The ferry from Plymouth goes straight to Santander.

Seriously though I never got why the British countryside is so well regarded until I moved down here. The south east is just shit. My friend from London came down for the weekend and he said that's the most amazing ride he's ever been on, and the most spectacular views he's ever seen. I've done quite a few trips to Wales which are always amazing too.

I get the feeling it's going to utterly pale in comparison to our Lake District & Scotland trip in two weeks. Scotland looks like one of the most stunning, awe-inspiring places in the world, and I hope I won't be disappointed. It seems far more spectacular than anywhere overseas.

Spain is nice, quite a dry landscape in a lot of places though. I think you'd enjoy the Pyrenees btw if you like hairpins and scenery.
 
What appeals to me most about Scotland is the remoteness of it. The only way in and out of Applecross on the west coast is via the highest mountain pass in the UK, which climbs 2000ft in six miles and is all single-track and quite precarious. And you can see over to the Isle of Skye, often from above the clouds. Sounds epic.

Yeah, seems the most spectacular places are also the wettest and coldest unfortunately. Spain isn't that amazing to look at, but it's got the weather and the roads. Pyreness are definitely on the agenda, the problem is there are so many places to go and so little time off work. :(

I'd like to just take half a year off and go wherever, but the cost of such an escape is utterly frightening. Could easily cost upwards of 20 grand.

My friend came over this weekend and we sorted out the route (roughly) and booked all the accomodation. Going on the 6th of June.

I'm currently debating whether to book an extra day off at the end, as we're going to be riding 250+ miles a day for nine consecutive days, with a 350 mile motorway slog back on the last day. Never done such a trip before so I don't know if I might be too exhausted to work the next day!

Yeah, if I had loads of money I'd have a few bikes. A big trip I'd like a ZZR1400 ideally, or maybe a Blackbird - though the linked brakes thing puts me off. The ZX6 feels too much like a toy at times, rapid as it is. Not great for luggage either, I'm going to try and get everything into an unexpanded tailpack. A 1400cc hypersports would be more than slightly overkill for everyday use though. :)

I've not had major problems with comfort so far though, it's actually better over distance than the Fazer. A few weeks ago I did a 300 mile day followed by a 200 mile day on fairly minor roads in Wales (we were riding for about 12 hours on the Saturday) and I was fine, if tired. I tried to build a rest day into the trip, but there just wasn't enough time to do everything we wanted to do that way. We shall see how it goes I guess.
 
Yup, put about 4,500 miles on it in the last couple of months. Expensive game. :|

10,219 miles on the clock when I got it, 3 and a half years old and with six previous owners. First registered in October 2005, first service at 429 miles in July 2006. It's pathetic! What's the point in buying the thing if you ain't gonna ride it?! Means it's gonna be worth next to nothing when I come to sell it.

New tyres too, as you might be able to see in the pics my rear tyre is past its shelf life and starting to square off. Got some Pirelli Diablo Stradas on order, getting the service done and the tyres fitted next week. :)
 
As long as they're the best you can't buy and keep you upright how can ya go wrong? Got a pair of Michilin Pilot Powers dual compound on the blade, best pair of tyres for our climate. Good for country runs, nice even wear through it's life even through commuting. Get around 7000k to a pair. Cheaper alternative is throwing on a single compound 180 instead of a 190 and letting it wear down the hump in the middle in time with the outers. Being stingy costs ya though mate :(

Yeah, I wanted Michelin Pilot Road 2s but the Michelins are so expensive compared with other brands. £210 for a pair, I just can't justify that kind of cash especially with a big expense around the corner. The Pirellis I got for £140, much more reasonable and highly recommended too...dual compound sports-touring tyre.

I don't see the point in getting a sports tyre, they rarely get the chance to warm up to operating temperature on the road (over here anyway), so actually offer less grip, and they wear out very quickly. I'm not Rossi and I don't ride like Rossi so the tyres which Rossi has are of no use to me. I like the triangular profile though, shame they don't use it more often in ST tyres.

I use 120/70 on the front and 180/55 on the rear.

More money than sense. Biking is a very expensive thing to do, sportsbikes especially so, I don't understand how you could throw thousands upon thousands at it if you aren't really that interested in it and just want to look cool.

Hell, with most people on bikes these days being sufferers of a midlfie crisis, I'm not even sure it's considered cool to be a biker anymore. I ride because I love riding and there's nothing more to it than that really.

Fun bike, but she's got some heavy 900 balls once she's broken in :(

Ouchies. Those Dunlops they put on bikes as standard fitment are shocking. Just shockingly bad.

It's amazing how much difference the tyres make though, they transform the handling and the character of the bike as much as the bike itself does.

It might not work out as expensive as you think. Best bet would be to fly over, buy a bike and then sell it before you leave. That way the bike itself shouldn't cost you much at all. Hiring one costs silly money though. In terms of day to day costs, I've budgeted £500 for a nine day trip, excluding servicing etc. and I think it should be just about manageable. You could very easily spend £100 a day, though. Or you could camp, never eat out and spend a lot less.

There's definitely some great riding here, although I've never ridden abroad so I don't really have anything to compare it to. Biggest downfalls really are the road surfaces can be pretty awful, the weather is completely unpredictable and it could chuck it down for days on end or be warm and sunny at literally any time of the year, there's a lot of traffic and the enforcement is quite OTT (although I hear it's far worse in Australia anyway).

Some stunning roads and scenery though. The roads tend to be narrow, tricky and technical rather than smooth, fast and flowing.

I'm hoping to get out to Sydney as I think I mentioned to you, for a few weeks hopefully at the end of the year. I don't know yet. Will be riding the Gold Coast if I do go, although that's not the reason for the visit.
