Utterly rediculous.

NOVELTY pig calendars and toys have been banned from a council office — in case they offend Muslim staff.

Workers in the benefits department at Dudley Council, West Midlands, were told to remove or cover up all pig-related items, including toys, porcelain figures, calendars and even a tissue box featuring Winnie the Pooh and Piglet.

Perhaps one should try adopting to western culture. Something like that would make sense if the intent was to offend. But a winnie the pooh tissue box? For crying out loud. I hate the people who capitulate to these things more than the people who complain about them.

Councillor Mahbubur Rahman, a practising Muslim, backed the ban. He said: “It’s a tolerance of people’s beliefs.”
::cries::

thats big BS If ye ask me,In germany they complained about a cross hanging in Goverment building but a half a year later where we wanted 2 band those hair thingis that female muslims wear they where all freaking out.
In germany a christian country **** no keep it at home!

man I wished we could just ban God/Alah out our every day life

edit: welcome back Rakurai :)

Look how some Christians act if there's a nude statue somewhere. Or if the word "evolution" pops up in a biology book. *gasp*

If they're going to bitch and moan about that, let the Muslims have a pig free office. They have every right to complain.

Does it sound rediculous? Yes. But I think Christians set the precedent.

Are muslims offended by the pig's appearance?

What is it with displaying cute little piggies that is so bad?

piggies=unclean. much like say, having a calender of fat, greasy guys. but hell id find that hilarious

Well. the fact is, pigs are NOT a dirty animal. I've been doing lots of reading, and pigs try to remain extremely clean when given the opportunity.

THey don't even sweat. Ever heard the phrase, "Sweaty Pig"?

Well... pigs don't sweat.

no

i love pigs, they are cute and taste delicious. but to muslims they are "flithy".

Well, the fact is, people don't turn into salt. But the Bible says it happened.

Their religion might say that pigs are bad, what of it?

Catholics only eat fish on Fridays, I think. The fact is, it's okay to eat meat on Fridays or any other day of the week.

Bottom line, it's their religion, accept that.

no thats bullshit especialy in a "christian country an catholics dontf ish on fridays

in Turkey its ok and Iran 2 but not in Germany the US or the Uk imo

Dude. I'm more accepting of religions than you will EVER be.

However, there's a line there where you go to being accepting and understanding of anothers religion, and oppressing people by preventing what little things they can display to make their lives happier.

You can get so outrageous with crying about what other people should do to respect your religion... there's lines that need to be drawn.

And who are you to speak anyways man? You're a devout anti christian spokesperson... so why are you spouting stuff about accepting religions?

Bottom line, if they're displaying these things to purposefully cause distress, then there's a problem. If not, it shouldn't be a problem.

But the same stupid logic goes into poor choices young make. The "if they jumped off a bridge would you do it too?" saying applies here exactly.

This has done nothing to help any 'tolerance,' if anything it's made them look petty and rediculous. "The ban has helped tolerance." is quite a funny sentence.

Ooooh, you're more accepting of religions than I'll "EVER" be!!! I think the use of uppercase lettering really proves your point.

You claim to be more accepting of others than me but yet you demand that there be a line drawn? How does that make any sense.

Who am I to speak about such things? Well, who the f*** are you? Oh yeah, you're that guy who claims to be accepting of others but really doesn't allow anyone to produce an opposing view.

You call me a "devout anti christian spokesperson..." You make it sound like I'm part of some sort of cult. I'm the spokesperson?!? Yeah, I sit in a dark room with other "devout anti christian" people and figure out new ways to speak out against the church. I'm such a bad man! ;(

Just look at all the rediculous demands made by Christians and other religious groups. Why should this demand be treated any different?

Any other demands made that are similiar to this I would call rediculous as well.

Being accepting of a religion has nothing to do with banning people from displaying non threatening personal items in their own personal spaces.

This reminds me of a thread I saw in another forum, about a guy who posted that his workplace got upset when he put up these little figurines of a miniatures game. The place he worked was a religious place, christian I think, and they didn't like the evil nature of the figurines. Granted, they were a little on the dark side, but still... I don't think the guy should have to remove them. Its a religious workplace, and I think it should heavily be considered to avoid unneccesarily confrontation, but still... I don't agree with it.

And my comments on your spokesperson thing was just me saying how much you like to bitch about christianity, no matter what its about.

Also, the problem isn't really companies or anyplace private doing it. They can require all employeed to wear burqas for all it goes. It's a private enterprise.

However this is a council/government. Thus it is NOT acceptable.

Exactly, plus you should never be tolerant of intolerance.

"We must be tolerant of other people's religions."

Well how about they be tolerant of your cute lil' piggies? Ridiculous.

Why don't we just ban everything and get it all over and done with? We can have bland offices, which are depressingly like prison cells, with no bright colour schemes, as not to offend those people who are frightened of bright colours. Why restrict it to the government offices though? Everywhere should have this blandness rule imposed.

Bloody hell, offended by cartoon pigs? There's a lot of things I take offence from (bloody crazy frog for a start) but I don't see them getting banned outright.

I see people being intolerant of British culture, which just so happens to include cartoon piggies.

[/rant]

heh.. you can get those without ANY banning :)

tru.dat

I think people like to personalise their offices though, because prison cell schemes are very depressing.

I don't see a piggy as being offensive as say a swastika.

I think that it's ironic that it's the pseudo-tolerant society that is breeding a new form of intolerance.

This is just down the road from me...
Stuff like this is always happening, one of my friends friends works in a disney store, and a muslim complained to the manager saying she wasn't going to buy a woody figure (from toy Story) because he had an American voice... Woody is a cow-boy, making him American... what voice do you expect him to have?

It all a load of bs.

Only dilbert related things should go in cubicles.. dilbert and 'office space' related things.

(you need a stapler to get the dilbert comics stuck on the wall ;))

You really live up to the german stereotype, don't you? Why would you want to ban veils? Why don't you want people to be able to express their religion?

Oh well the source is the Sun, so that automatically makes it dubious.

I wouldn't let anyone take my piggy bank away from me, I've had it for almost 20 years.

Also, Dilbert related stuff rocks. Except for Tan Durk.

I agree that the pig issue is ridiculous, but you still haven't answered why it's so wrong to wear a veil at a workplace.

its a political symbol. in Turkey they are not alllowed 2 wear it at work ,why would they be allowed 2 wear in a "christian country"? and also Its a symbol of opression most women will tell you they have no problem wearing it BUT thats because they've been frggin brainwashed, You should see that movie that guy from Holland made and then got killed 4 it -__-

Should you be allowed to wear a cross around your neck? Certain hairstyles? Certain clothes? Of course. you should. Yes, it's a political symbol, but we live in a democracy. Or maybe you'd rather live in a counry without freedom of speech?

That's a bunch of shit, it is his intollerance of people's beliefs which is the problem.

You come to England, you can't complain and whine because English culture prefers things that you idiots don't. :flame:

That's exactly what happened. Stupid begat stupid. :rolling:

F*cking political correctness. Half of it is bullshit. (strangly I just found out I'm a better typist when angry)

It's up to the individual companies, though. Some do ban it I'm sure, some probably require certain things too, they're free to do so (unless Britain has some harsh laws invading personal rights but I sincerely doubt it).
