Piracy Discussion

Hail to the Glorious Leader Munro!

I'm pirating Clear Sky, Mercenaries 2, and Spore.

Then again, I might be joking!

Kinda silly to pretty much censor anything about piracy or admitting you do it.

If you cover something up enough, it magically goes away! Anything you can't see, isn't a problem.

Munro's forum, Munro's rules. He's rather adamant about the piracy issue.

Doesn't make it any less silly though, nor less arbitrary than a forum wide ban on the use of the letter "z".

Im not censoring anything about piracy, if that was the case then this thread would've been deleted :)

I fully support people discussing the pro's and con's of piracy, what I don't like to see is people openly admitting to piracy when we have rules that if you do that you can get perma banned instantly. It also doesn't look too good to people to see users telling others to pirate games. Thats the kind of shit that Valve wouldn't look kindly on.

Talk about piracy all you want, debate the pro's and con's just don't go boasting about how you may do it.

Me and my friend set up a fake CS clan and recruited people to be admins.

We then got them to fill out a fake application form that incuded Steam login and pass..

We stole over $1500 in Steam accounts and used them with hacks until they were all banned.

The rest doesn't bug me, as linking to illegal material is at the very least a legal dark grey area, but the bold piece is what I think is weird. Why not? If someone makes a useless post, like "I just pirated game X" then that's just that, and if he makes other worthless posts, he logically gets banned, I would agree with that. But that's because he's being a useless jerk surely, not because he's admitting to downloading stuff? A single post stating that you have downloaded stuff that fits the context of the thread isn't even "bat an eye" worthy, is it?

What Munro dictates Evo must heroically enforce.

Lately I have been buying games at Half Price Books. Here I am obtaining a game and playing it on my computer. The difference between that and pirating a game? I paid $5 at a store as opposed to downloading it online. In either case the developer doesn't get a penny from me. Not sure why they don't go after resellers as well?

tbh

Exactly what % of pirated things would've been bought in the first place? There's plenty of things that I think pirates wouldn't buy if it wasn't pirated by them anyways.

That's just sick.

lol that's all i remember him on this forum for. That and some radio thing

Having recently aquired a DS flash-card, I can conclude that Piracy is great for allowing you to aquire software you would be ashamed to take up to the counter. My only regret is that this card cannot turn my DS pink to match the kinds of software it's running. Not that I would do so in public anyway.

By this same principle, I will be arrested tomorrow for shoplifting from Ann Summers. When questioned, I'll explain that I didn't get a rumble pack add-on for the card and decided to improvise.

I'm pirating right now.

ARRRRR avast ye land lubbers.

But no, really, I buy from companies that I feel are dedicated to the gamer community, like Capcom. I will be buying THE SHIT out of Street Fighter 4.

If I feel "frugal" I go to Ebay and bam there's like a hundred stupidly cheap games ripe for the taking.

In all seriousness though, as an underage gamer Piracy would (THEORETICALLY) enable me to obtain games before my time, i.e. Arcanum (a wonderful, wonderful game) and Fallout 1 + 2 (I could probably only buy this online).

If I pirated, that is.

They're not quite abandonwear, but the only way I could possibly buy them would be through my parents, who look down on this 'videogaming business'. Not that I pirate. Or anything similar to that.

everyone does it.its just like that are you a virgin thread.Everyone said that they are not virgins but they are.Btw,my mass effect i pirated.DRM IS DOING THE SUCKING

Ok, just viewing this thread for the first time. This was the first post and it just stopped me in my tracks.

I've surely been gaming since before you were born, and I've never pirated a game.

Also, I probably lost my virginity before you were born. lolol

IMO piracy is probably to blame for the fact that games like Condemned: Criminal Origins 2 didn't come to the PC.

You have ruined my life.

I don't pirate games, because I don't trust the pirates. I buy Steam games from Steam because they're the games I want to play and because I'm poor. I also really like music. And I can't afford to buy cd's all the time. So I'll get them from the library. I won't give them to people or sell them.
Would Four Tet rather that I knew about them but didn't have any of their music or listened to them and loved them?
Occasionally if there's a track or something I really desperately want I'll download it. I buy albums when I think they're excellent. I brought Untrue. That was the last album I purchased.
Piracy is not great. But personally if I was a musical artist man, I'd rather have lots of people that knew and liked me than money from cds.

Yeah, that's what PC gaming needs after all. Another shitty port of an overrated console game.

The first Condemned was very good, even if it was a console port.

Eg Jonathan Coulton. But then the business model is substantially different for Music vs. Gaming. I guess.

On the other hand, Dwarf Fortress...

I don't quite understand the logic behind Munro's law. So it's OK to admit to taking drugs, but it's not OK to admit to pirating?

Well, then I can't really say much in this thread for my own safety. o__O

The wisest statement on this thread.

NO! Nobody buys PC ports because anyone that wanted to play the game already has on a console. If you don't release simultaniously your products will fail. Console piracy is just as easy and probably heaps safer than PC piracy which will get a noob loaded with trojans and root kits.

Meawhile down here in Aus the anti-piracy dudes are only after bootleggers and other randoms out to make a profit off dodgy copies unlike the "let's sue everyone" policy the RIAA/MPAA/etc has.

I prefer to steal games off the counter, it's more exciting

Nobody here takes drugs, we just talk about stuff we read about them on the internet!

Just like I know that none of you would be so morally despicable as to pirate a game. Nor would I. Ever.

Honestly, I have no real personal problem with the idea of pirating movies or music, as long as you buy the really good ones. When it comes to games I almost always buy them though, although there's nothing wrong with checking it out first to see if it's worth it. But developers need your money, and deserve it even if they've already got plenty like Valve.

You know, Valve hosting us makes sense for us to be strict on discussion of piracy, given that this website is PAID FOR by the revenue from purchased games.

I actually didn't know that. Kickass.

All regular members should get free steam games then :p
