A quote from the newest issue of PC Gamer US:

It seems that scientists have advanced two differing theories about how to fight the aliens. Gordon and his allies champion one of these approaches - and it's plenty risky - but a rival scientist and his acolytes advance an even more aggressive plan, one with dire consequences for the morality of humankind. "One group is wrong, but another group is spectacularly wrong," as [Gabe] Newell puts it.

Discuss. :)

How about you give us more details from the PC gamer before we discuss.

As the PC Gamer article discussion thread implies, there's not much more in the magazine to discuss. Don't you find that little morsel discussion-worthy enough? :)

I can picture it now, the boss of the game will be a scientist in another HEV suit with a crowbar!
RUN 4 TEH HILLZ~!!~~!!!1 lol

Oh sorry! I didn't even see that thread! Yeah, that tidbit is quite interesting. But frankly, I'd rather not ponder over the plot of the game, I'd rather have the whole thing hit me as a surprise.

In fact, these boards are revealing more and more bothersome tidbits every day, I think I'm going to leave until it comes out, or atleast until the next delay announcment so I can join in the bitching and moaning.

Goodbye.

Oh no, I made manny_c44 leave! Come back, manny_c44! Come baaaaaaack! :)

Is it better to know and chatter about a few things (things Valve wouldn't intentionally reveal unless they were relatively petty in the grand scheme of HL2) or to unplug from the forums and subject oneself to the Dark Ages? As Gabe said, one group is wrong, but another group is spectacularly wrong. ;-)

Sounds like the usual movie plot twist :/

"Don't do it man, it'll destroy humanity!"

If you don't see what I mean, go watch Final Fantasy : The spirits within..

That does sound pretty interesting.. wish E3 was closer (..yes, <2 weeks it too far away)

The 10 character limit loves you, Harij :)

Anyhow, is the PC Gamer worth picking up?

Please tell me everything that is mentioned about TF2 in PCGAMER please.

Nothing as far as I know. However, the PCzone magazine said they never wanted to announce TF2 too much and spoil the source engine, as that'd automatically spoil the development of HL2, so they decided to wait until after HL2 was announced.

that bit about the other scientist (dr. breen im assuming at this point) having his own agenda sounds very cool. i think it will be a more indirect fight, as in youll have to deal with whatever hes been scheming since the incident happened and when you went into the stasis.

Yeah, well it's been announced...ill be pissed if nothing is announced at E3...as for multiplayer im going nucking futs over TF2! Check out some of these little facts.

"Medics can run out to save dying teamplayers and revive them...they can actually drag or pick the player off to get them to safe cover before the medic also gets sniped"

"Parametric animation is used in combining tons of joints and parts of the body realisticly to make it look as real life. For instance shooting someone in the foot or the knee you would see them lip off or skimp off but the player isnt actually effected by it and continues at the same speed"

must look like they are limping/skimping pretty damn fast....

but cool nonetheless

ive had that idea about the medics for some time now. im glad to see it in a game. by the way, where did you get that info about TF2?

There was a server-side mod for Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory (ShrubET) and one of the things it added was the ability to drag wounded guys like that. It was really cool, I hope to see it in TF2. Although, the game would need a change of pace for it to work out. As it stands in TFC it would be quicker for the guy to just die, respawn and bunnyhop back to where he was instead of being slowly dragged into cover and revived.

I think you should keep in mind the map sizes are/or can be much much larger now. So respawning may be the much slower way of getting back. Especially if they are deep in the opposing base. We're talking about 8x8x8 times bigger than a hl map... potentially anyway. Though you'd think the medic would get wasted before he could do too much dragging. But i'm sure they'll figure that out.

BTW.. i'll bet they have fixed bunny hopping and replaced it with a better jumping system. but thats all just my opinion

Im doubting this info...

give us a resource pal

just look at a cs kz_ jumping map and times the by 8x8x8. thats way too high up. i am talking about a 25 second fall from the top to the bottom.

I said they could do that. I never said that they would go all 8 up.. but think... a 10 story building in cs where u can go all the way top to bottom.. like vertigo.. its possible. but pretty improbable. I expect a lot of changes to the gameplay surrounding cs2 and tf2. They will play very differently from what we are all used to.

you could easily fit a 30 stroy building in cs

bah... that wasn't my point. I was reffering more to the expansion of a full map like vertigo to the huge sizes of hl2 maps. You know what i meant.

That's actually OLD info. I don't know if TF2 has changed at all since, but that info is probably 2-3 year old.

Cool. But WTF the G-man does here? This game's gonna rock our pants off.

PC Gamer also said the SDK would be released before E#, for whatever that's worth.

Well if both groups are "wrong," I guess that sets us up for a frightneing ending, and a very dark cloud of a cliffhanger going into HL3 :-D

have you guys ever flown a chopper to the sky in desert combat for BF42? lets just say you will fall for, oh maybe, 3 minutes at least.

too true.

im a black hawk pilot, i just play chopper maps and ferry troops around all the time, i find it fun.

Wow, this got way off-topic while I was asleep.

...my beautiful topic... :(

Anywho, about that Half-Life sequel?
I'm wondering if the other scientist's group isn't the Combine. They're seemingly a mix of biomechanical beings, and they don't seem to have the same vibe as the Xen aliens. In addition, Dr Breen, who seems to be the other scientist, is associated with them and can be seen broadcasting in their detention area.

no, you're not a black hawk pilot. you're a computer gamer who flies a helicopter in games.

That's all fine with me. I'm really wondering about the release of HL3 (should it ever come). Will we have the same suspense about its release date, or will it go all smooth and dandy? Will there be an evil hacker? Maybe some greedy corporations will put its release on hold for - erm - lets say ... its nextgen videocard? Or a man inside may try to screw it all up by naming dates left and right while knowing all the time it won't happen at all? It's gonna be even worse I'm sure.

yeah, I really wonder how excited they'll get us next time? And who knows, maybe we're in for more fun & excitement with HL2 ...

I'm off now so no use in bashing what I said

Well... Gabe said that it certainly won't take them another 5 years for HL3. Which is realistic because they can just update Source (like Epic with Unreal to Unreal 2 tech) in a year or so and start working on content. It wouldn't surprise me if it's here in 3 years.
Then again, maybe they're going in a different direction and HL3 is not going to be one game but episodes of it are released over a few years time on Steam to form one massive adventure.

I was thinking the same thing. I think the other scientists led by Dr. Breen are in league with the black ops guys and are trying to aquire alien technology and alien dna for their own evil purposes. The Combine could be a result of hybrid genetic engineering of human/alien dna.

The Xen aliens could simply be responding to an invasion of their home by the black ops guys which was alluded to during the Xen levels in HL with all the powersuit-equipped bodies littering the landscape.

That theory makes alot of sence. I would not be supprised if it were the case. But obviously this isnt gona be the most important part of the plot. So I aint too bothered if its true....

Hmmmm, Im guessing the rival scientists are the G-man and his eh... boss guys. mabey? That would explain the sorta on your side sorta not attitude of the G-man.

I would say this has something to do with the missing water in some of the ocean seafloor levels.
