For Christmas I got a DVD player and a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean. In one scene Captain Jack Sparrow grabs a red-hot poker and burns a donkey's butt with it. The donkey's scream is the same scream as the poison zombie in HL2.

There's a few of those kinds of sounds I bet.

At the beginning of the game when the combine bursts through the door of the apartment and starts beating the people inside, the noise that the guy being beaten makes is also used someplace else, in another videogame.

I know I've heard that exact soundfile/effect before, but can't remember where, exactly. I think it's from an asian mmorpg, actually, but I'm not sure.

hmm, nifty. i just checked it out, and if it's not the exact same thing it is pretty damn close.

I know ive heard it from goldeneye heh
HL2 uses quite a few stock sound effects unfortunately, but meh.

I wouldnt doubt that they used a donkey or some other animal for the sounds of the fast zombies...and other creatures

Actually, alot, almost all, of the monster and creauture sounds in HL2 are made from animals, but changed or modified in some small or large way. Deer, birds, etc.

Yeah if you read raising the bar, it tells you how they use and mix certain animal sounds, like the bullmoose.

Well duh, it's not like zombies or antlions or headcrabs or bullsquids or snarks exist in real life...

Yeah, the guy being beaten up makes the standard 'having ass kicked' noise that you can notice in many movies and games. I guess valve was just too lazy to make their own... then again, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :D

I also find it funny how Rammstein chose to sample the Gauss Cannon from HL1 in their song "Moskau" :D

Just before the chrorus, you can hear the Gauss cannong winding up.

A radio in Poland - Radio ESKA - used sounds from CS. Not exactly HL2, but related, eh? They used radio commands.

lol thats really sad...like the counter strike rocks song. new depths of lowness there.

This happens alot in SFX...

One I recognize all the time is on a CD I have called "Hollywood Sound Effects". It's supposed to be police radio chatter. Since purchasing the CD I've heard that particular sound effect in at least 20 different movies or T.V. shows...

And for a long time I recognized Starcraft sounds in radio, tv, other video games etc. Some rapper was even using the end of the battle orchestra hit sound as an instrument in his beat once... drove me crazy since I reconized the sample.

I dont know how many long term members remeber this, but the sound that film made on the bbc, i think it had something to do with the demon headmaster or something. There was a weird siren in the background that was similar to the one in the traptown video. We were pretty excited about that pre-HL2 days, with not much to talk about :p (i must find the thread)

Yeah actually I was listening to a radio in China and they always used to play "Counter-Terrorists win" or "Go go go" accompanied by AWP shots.

I always notice shit like this. When I'm watching TV or whatever I'll hear a noise and say "whoah thats from Doom!!!" or something. It's funny how many sounds get re-used over and over in movies/tv shows/games. One thing that also cracks me up is that in like..almost EVERY action movie since around Star Wars, there has to be this one guy who falls off something or is thrown through the air by an explosion and makes this one same "aaaeeeee" scream. It's even in one or more of the freakin LOTR movies! It cracks me up everytime I hear it and people think I'm crazy when I explain why I'm laughing.

Yeah, that radio chatter noise and the falling scream have been used in tons of movies, and even some games (I believe N64 Goldeneye had the falling scream).

To use a good example, the sound of a Camel unit dying in AoE2 (one of the most popular RTS games ever) was exactly the sound of an Imp dying in Doom. Also, the sound of the final Doom II boss spitting out monster-cubes has been used in movies and elsewhere.

Anyone notice movies which have a small part of track 1 from Half-Life 1 soundtrack? Adrenaline Horror.

I think I have heard it on South Park before too.
Blade Trinity maybe? Or maybe I'm getting confused.
If I spot any again while watching my movies I'll try to post the movie here.

Might have heard it on the X-files too.

I also hear Command and Conquer guys dying in some movies too.

I wonder if they'll use Howard Dean's yell for a sound effect for monsters or frustrated zombies in future video games.

haven't any of you noticed the famous scream of terror? Countless movies and television shows use the exact same sissy male "wwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" scream for just about everything. that and the higher pitched "aaahgghh" when someone gets sliced or evicerated in some way"

Maybe donkeys are poison zombies IN HIDING?
Read the thread, we aren't talking about donkey's anymore.

:p

I love when I hear those common sound effects. They really ruin a good movie IMO.

I remember hearing a short music clip from HOMM4 in some stupid sitcom thing.

I was like OMFG THEY STOLE IT DIEEEE.

I get really reactive over that.

Most games, and movies use the same generic sound effects, a couple of years ago it was the same sound for someone falling, the exact same sound (i'm sure everyones hear it). Don't blame HL2, it's hard to find a sound that fits well, so it's so much easier to use the one that has worked for others.

Oh yeah, something ruining a good movie is always cool. I really like the people that throw popcorn from the back row, as well as people who forget to turn their mobile phones off and act like it isn't their phone that's ringing. Bloody love 'em.

:p

LOL that came out wrong.

I mean I love hearing the sound effects BUT they ruin a good movie.

On some tech commercial I swear I heard a lightsaber start-up sound.

The same sound things are used in loads of things, e.g.
The radio chater in GTA3 is idential to some used as backround noise in a cop film I saw

People use the same SFX as they aren't usually copyrighted... only the full song is. Just like the kid laughing sound... used in tons and tons of movies/commercials and all sorts of things.

Yeah that sound appears in Starcraft as well. I think the Marines or the Ghost uses it. I don't know if they took it of SC or if SC took it from somewhere else...

Did you really all believe that in today's commercial world that somebody would go to the effort of rerecording thousands and thousands of sounds when they could simply just buy them instead?
http://www.sound-ideas.com/6000.html

And it's usually not a case "game A" stole sounds from "game B", because nearly every single movie and game out there bought a sound library and used what they needed from it. "game A" and "game B" both used the same commericially available sound library.
