I open this thread to openly discuss with Brassmonkey who is a doom fanboy and maybe a hl spoiler, because i want to show him that hl community is able to argue without pissing other off. Let's discuss politly and friendly our view on hl2 and doom3 and their engines. I'm a newbie here and I hope I can get some responses from u guys.

Doom3 better lighting: TRUE
I saw many doom3 media too, I even collect some of them as I collect hl2 media. The dynamic lighting is absolutly impressive. I especially like the one in the toilet with the dead body of a fat man lying on the floor.

Doom3 better graphics: MAYBE
In hl2 , boxes or no boxes doesn't matter at all, it just need to archieve visually realistic. As a matter of fact that hl2 is the most impressive game showed in e3 (even more impressive than doom3, just go read stuff about e3 u will find out), hl2 is considered to have good enough graphics.

HL2 can rule over Doom3: 95% TRUE
Lighting is not the only thing that the engine does. We are talking about action games here, we need motional physics. As we all know that hl2 have a fully interactive world, things react to forces according to their weight, frictions, momentum etc (Gabe said that a barrel inside a train can move forward when the train decelerate if there's not enough friction, ain't it cool?!!). At this point, source engine do a better job than doom3 in making the game motionally realistic.

What else make hl2 rule over doom3?
Many thing else, but i just want to point out one. Simply take a look at how many time hl community is greater than doom commnunity right now at this moment. This huge community is going to contribute to the success of hl2, by buying the game and making mods, etc etc...

Conclusion:
Despite Doom3 engine has more advance lighting, so far, Source engine is still the best engine for action fps games due to its more advance motional physics system which is exactly what we need to make hl2 rule over doom3. Motion, action is better than those damn stupid dynamic shadow; in natural selection, the world is damn dark where u don't even see any shadow, but the game is still fun to play and offer a horrific atmosphere (i always hide in the dark hall way and jump on the marine who comes then scare the shit out of him, i like to play the role who terrorist other...hehe).

I will sure buy hl2, and consider to buy doom3 later.

I can also agree with lightning, probably cause it has normally like 100 lightning sources per scene to be calculated.

The graphics are excessive but yes, better. Doom 3 uses 300k poly models.

Half-Life 2 is buitl upon a customizeable simulationengine. Where Doom 3 more is a rendermovie.

with my experience with the Doom 3 Alpha and other more recent screenshots, it seems to me there are at least 2 major flaws in Doom 3's ray tracing shadow technique

1. the edges of shadows are RAZOR sharp, a distracting sight

2. many object shadows cast a shadow that completely covers up whatever texture it happens to fall upon

now, i haven't noticed this happening with HL2 yet, mainly i think because Source takes into account radiosity calculations for it's dynamica lighting, i could be wrong though

PLease respond to this thread and keep this up , so that brassmonkey can still see the thread when he wake up.

in fact, talking about lighting, the water reflection and refraction are also part of lighting ( high school phyics) , hl2 do a better job in that than doom3. You may argue that they can add the water effect to the doom3 engine and make water has reflection and refraction, then I can also argue that valve can add dynamic lighting to source engine.

Why don't you all shut up? None of you actually know what you are talkign about ayway.

The point is that they are action games, motion play a more important role than lighting. Source engine is more advance in motion than doom3 engine.

Sorry man, i'm just a newbie, learning to speak english and learning stuff about videogames. "Shut up" is the word that hurts in a forum.

Why just the one? Why not both? I think Brassmonkey is doing a bad thing. He's forcing us to choose between one or the other. Which I had no intention of doing anyway.

we should consider this financially, the videocard and hl2 will be like $500 , not include tf2 and cs2 yet. I'm still thinking where should i get the money for doom3. I'm still a student, not as rich as u guys.

I'm a student. Why are you including the price of the videocard? You will be able to buy Half Life 2 without the video card you know.

"We should consider this financially, the videocard, Half Life 2, the car I need to drive to buy Half Life 2, the food I need to eat while playing Half Life 2, The clothes I wear will come to $2400."

Without the card , hl2 wont run in my computer. it's absolutly necessary to buy the card.

There is dynamic lighting in the HL2, but they don't use on everything.

You can't say any of that stuff, until you play both of the games. So forget it

I come up with a solution to get doom3. I will buy hl2 and the videocard , maybe tf2 and cs2 also, and download doom3 from internet see whether i still have space left in my computer.

Will youiguys just stop comparing games that aren't finished or on store shelves..it's getting like more then childish.... rediculous ....

They who like great graphics and some shootin action will like doom3..they who liked HL1 or some more in a game will like hl2...but a lot of people(fps gamers in general) will like em both

Everybody needs to stop wining about razorsharp shadows here(i 'v seen soft shadows in doom3 very cearly).i've seen some faults in hl2 movies too..but i think they are no reason to complain..everything of hl2 and Doom3 i've seen looks amazing..and i'll be happy to install these games on my harddrive and for f*ck sakes play them

gamevoodoo, did you not see me close the other thread? This is just going to turn into a big flame war. Closed, again.
