portfolio site

Over all you don't really have anything to show. I don't want to sound harsh, just trying to give you some crit. Basicly the only work that you have really done are some props, and there arn't a great deal of them. What you need to do is create a vaired portfolio. Game developers are not after a large quantity of work but what they do what is high quality. You have to show them that you can do somthing that others cannot. You have to understand that these developers work a 10 hour day then have to sift through a pile of 60 CV's, you really need to catch their eye with somthing or your just going to go in the bin with everyone elces work.

You need to have a go at some character's. Two good way's of doing this are.
-Take an already created game... say hl2... then design a character or enemy that would work in that game, trying to stick to the origanal art style used for the game. Doing it this way will of course give you a great deal of othre content to use as insiration.

or

-Design your own game, then create chracters. Remeber as a character modeler the chances of you, as a junior artist, of creating the lead character is pritty slim. Try working around designing enemys and other npc's found in your game idea.

Coming up with game idea's is pritty easy, write a list of differnt gonres (horror, sci-fi, cartoon..etc) then write a list of different game types (RPG, FPS, platformer, racing) all you can think of. Then from your list pick say two random game types and some gonres.. one or two of each so you will end up with somthing like. Horror-Cartoon style Platformer. Now you have the basis of your game and just think up somthing quick. From there get some character design on the go.

Other helpful tips which is really really important when designing characters. You must first off decide who your demographic are, are they 8-12 yr olds or is it going to be an 18+. Think of at least 3 films/games/tv programs that will represent the demographic and your game. And just have fun with it. You also need to deside on your platform will it be for pc, gamecube, playstation. This tells you what polly count to work on. Try and do some high and some low polly work.

Basicly you need alot more work, everyone can make a stool and texture it, show people your talent. Don't be afraid of modeling characters. They will be rubbish to start with but you will see improvment with each guy. Try and get to some life drawing classes if you can. If will give you a good sence of proportion and volume in people which is really handy to have when modeling charcters.

Also try having a look at www.sourceblog.org, there are alot of very good tutorals here, practis the metal and wood and you will soon get the hang of things.

Last but not least, if you are serious about having a portfolio website i woul suggest that you get a proper url, geocites isnt the most professinal place in the world.

Sorry if i cased any offence. GL

If you want to be a character artist then listen to what Stormy said. He makes a lot of good points that you would do well to listen to.

However, judging by the quantities of props on your site, it seems like you may be more interested in being an environment artist. Larger companies will have artists for just making characters, and artists for just making environments. If you want to create the environments then I highly suggest you build an entire level for a game using just your own content. Not only will this show them the quality and quantity of content you can make on your own... but it will also show them that you have experience in what it takes to make a finished level from scratch.

As for your portfolio site itself... like Stormy said, you need to get off geocities and shell out some cash for a .com. Geocities screams unprofessional. Once you have a .com (or .net or whatever), you should work on the layout a bit. Take a look at other people's portfolio sites and see how they designed their websites... and ask yourself if you like it. If you do, pick out the reasons why, and incorporate them into your site. To be honest, your site right now is kind of off-putting. What I mean is that, a blank black page with white text as the homepage isnt very appealing, and the sideways buttons are hard to read (I actually had to turn my head sideways to read it).

Hope this helped and I wish you well!
