Problem with autoexec.cfg file

I have made a autoexec.cfg file but it is not being read.
I have noticed that under properties it is a text file and not a CFG file but I can't change this.
What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you can see all the file extension.

And make sure the extension reads .cfg not .txt or .cfg.txt

right click on the file and select rename. then change the .txt to .cfg

Thanks for the quick reply but I am still in trouble.Here is what I have.

textfile

I can not change this for some reason.

You have to enable windows to show file extentions, on any folder choose tools then folder options, then click the view tab at the top, and find the line that says hide file extentions(look in pic below) and uncheck it.
