Check it. Sounds like a really good thing for those of you with a low budget. Maybe even I will eventualy get one because of this. Smart move Sony.

Don't want to rain on your parade but I think this was posted in another thread somewhere, think it was embedded in the 'core' thread but not entirely sure.

Regardless, there decision basically nullfies the only reason to get the $600 version unless you have the urge to burn cash. It definately makes the PS3 a more attractive option now though, since it's effectively a $500 console.

Sorry if this has been posted already. I thought it was new info.

Except for it having a bigger hard drive and it comming with wireless support...

You can buy a much bigger HD for less than $100, and for me it's not a problem to just plug it into the wall. Also, I have a PSP which will do fine as a card reader. So ... buying the $600 version would be a bad deal for me and most other people.

Oh yeah...

Oh right, because your typical Baracuda or DiamonMax drive is really going to work in a PS3... It's called propiritary hardware, guy. Unless your going to get an yet-to-exist mod-chip for the thing.

No, Sony is using standard hard drives for the PS3. They did the same for the PS2 actually, I'm using a 120GB Maxtor HD with HDLoader right now. Anyway I'm 100% sure, they've announced that standard HDs will be compatible with the PS3.

Than I'm sure you can provide a source for it. Since your 100%.

The 360 is getting HDMI too, before the PS3 release - and a software update (also due before PS3 release) is knocking the HD output up to 1080p. If you want HD DVDs on your HDTVs without having to sell your wife and kids, this is the way to go.

The quality freaks strike again. HDTV hasn't interested me in the slightest. First and foremost I need a new TV and I couldn't be arsed financing for one.

Meh doesn't bother me.

I didn't think the 360 was getting HDMI, just a software update to allow 1080p. Not that this maters - there's very little between component, vga and hdmi. It's just more marketing fluff.

They're coming out in time for the HD DVD drive release - Just a cable with HDMI at one end and the standard HD 360 console connection at the other. Source here.

Because? The price will be almost identical.

$400 for xbox console + $180 for HD-DVD playback (games won't untilize extra storage) = $580

or

$600 for PS3 Premium (built in blu ray playback, and storage that games WILL use)

I don't see such a huge difference. And when you figure in that with the PS3 you are getting a 60 GB hardrive, for extra storage, free online service (as far as I know), 1080p out of the box, no updates needed (some launch titles will use 1080p), plus blu-ray dvd playback out of the box, no add ons or updates needed, just plug and play...

The only negative I can think of is that you will have to buy your HDMI cables seperate for the ps3, but even that isn't such a big deal. Chances are, if you have a tv capable of 1080p playback, you already have a home media/theatre setup and a few HDMI cables anyway.

Neat.

All I need now is a 100"+ projector for my new flat and a HD version of Jaws!

I guess if comes down to which format takes off. As things stand HDDVD is clearly the favourite with the hardcore AV crowd - both in terms of quality and price.

I'm thinking that even if blu ray was to crash and burn, ps3 still comes standard, and so far, even a launch title (resistance) is using the storage capacity (50 + gb right?)... You couldn't get that on any other system. And what happens 3 years from now, when texture resolutions are higher, and in game cinematics are to be played back at 720 or 1080? You are definately going to need that extra storage, considering the devs are already needing it now, at launch.

I doubt it'll make that much difference. At worst we'll get games on a few dvds for the 360 - not a big deal for me, i'm much more concerned about the games.

as am I, as am I. And yeah, you could surely just get the same game but on a few DVDs. But what about something like a new Final Fantasy game, with a huge, long ass intro cinematic, that plays back in 1080p. That'll eat up your disk space super fast. I would just get annoyed having to swap a disc, just to watch a movie, then swap back.

I mean yeah, its just me being nit picky and lazy. But why bother, if I don't have to :p

I like the xbox 360, i'm not bashing it. Its got a lot of great titles coming down the pipe. Nothing out right now would merit a purchase for me, because pretty much all the titles out are cross platform sans dead rising which I wasn't to impressed with (gameplay wise), and saints row (which I haven't played yet).

I've decided to support sony at launch because, the launch line up looks pretty cool, the horizon seems pretty promising as far as titles go.

Agreed - either console will keep most gamers happy. I'm currently torn between a ps3 and upgrading my pc. I was all set to give up on pcs and then TF2 was announced. Decisions decisions.

Wii60 is the way i'm going. Wether you have a 360 or a PS3, you'll still be buying a Wii. :D

Unless I'm mistaken, the 3rd party HDMI accessory won't display actual 1080p due to hardware limitations (HDCP compliancy). Bottom line is, I'm pretty sure the ATi chipset for Xbox 360 does not offer the support for true HDMI capabilities, so you won't get all the benefits but it'll still function partially.

It's not 3rd party, Microsoft make it. I'm not sure what resolutions it offers, but the 360 can already handle 1080i - I doubt it would take much in the way of altered software to put out non-interlaced 1080.

This] one?

Erk, maybe. It's listed on Lik Sang as a microsoft cable, under "coming soon". If they're releasing HDDVD I can't understand why they wouldnt release HDMI cables. Guess time will tell.

Why are you complaining about lack of HDMI output ? The quality in difference between HDMI/Component is neglible and the only bonuses it has is the cords look nicer and in 2045 you can play movies that use the ICT thing. Awesome.

360 will do 1080p over component for games (Not movies) in the next [major] dash update. So, games will be upscaled (If you have a TV that does 1080p.. all 2 of you) till developers start throwing out 1080p (Don't count on it any time soon..).

OH YES!

Only for America and Japan.

*sarcastic clapping*

Well done Sony.
