Ok. I need help. I have asked this many times but not got a response that I'm happy with. So I ask you this. Will a XFX 6600gt run on a 300 watt PSU?
On the XFX site it says both 300w and 450w as the minimum. So what to believe? Or should I just contact them?

try running it and see if it works

I would but if it does not work, I don't think I would be allowed to buy a new PSU

well do you have any money yourself? i mean why are you asking this then? did you already get this 300w psu or are your parents buying you one?

Parents dont like me spending money on things. So for my birthday I hope to buy any upgrades for my pc but they wont let me spend more then £250 and all that £250 will go to upgrades and BF2 , So no money left for a PSU.

I wouldn't risk dammaging my system because of a bad PSU. But the choice is yours. 300W is really low and if it's not a good brand like Antec, Thermaltake or OCZ then you are taking a big guess. It could work, it could...

How many Harddrives, CD/DVD drives, fans do you have? Is this going to be a PCI Express card or AGP? I assume AGP.

If it's a good quality Antec or Thermaltake type brand 300Watt PSU then you will be OK as long as you don't have a lot of extra components in your PC (2+ harddrives, lights etc). If it's a no-name brand, Raidmax, powmax, deer etc then you will want a better Power Supply.

FYI 300Watt is min. not 450Watt.

300 Watt might be enough but there's also a high chance it isn't. When I got my Radeon 9700 Pro, I had a 280 Watt PSU. Fair enough, it's not 300 but it's close enough. My GFX card was using to much power for my PSU to cope and it burnt out after 2 weeks.

1 hardrive,1 DVD drive, CPU fan, 3 sensors, AGP. Also a 56k modem I can get rid of and a braodband modem connected by USB
Is there a way of finding out how many watts my PSU actually gives out?

Well on the back of your computer there should be a small red button type thing that you can move. That can change the amount of watts. It usually has 2 options that you can go to. The lower one, if your system is to much for it well...my computer just gets to the boot up screen, restarts, get to boot up screen, restart etc..
They should have numbers on it. Those numbers should represent the amount of watts.

I think you can check like that...

It says 300 watts, 15 amps on the +12rail, also no red button. Made by a comapny called sea something, sonic i think. Is it safe to leave the side panel off the computer while the computer is on?

Sorry friend I think you are mistaken, but I could be mistaken just as well. I tihnk the red switch deals with the with power selector. If you live in the US it should be at 115v and if you live here it should be in the 220v, but some PSUs dont have this. Generally because they come equipped with low voltage sensing equipment.

And Nabobalis

:D it seems a little inaccurate but just to be safe whatever rating you get just add watts to it, also its nice to know your amps and rails but thats just making the subject more difficult. The PSU is the thing you should spend alot of time on deciding though so goodluck.

Yes it is, the only side effects are the noise and the dust. The good side effect it that the inside of your case will be cooler.

Add how many watts, also 6600gt is not on the list so should i put a 6800 vanilla card instead?

What about these sites?

Yeah probably mistaken as I usually am ^_^

Not so. If you have good fan placement in your case, having the side on will create a wind tunnel effect.

Wind tunnel effect?

I'm not too good at explaining things, but sorta like a wind tunnel. He he. Like, positive and negative air pressure. Like, more fans going out, it would try to suck air in.

He he. That sorta explain?

It depends what type of cooling you have. I assumed he didn't have many fans so opening the case can help to get the hot air out of the case. I also tried to point a big housefan right in the case, the result was a 10C decrease. When you have problems with your vid card, it's a good way to test if it's because of the heat. I wouldn't recommand using that as a normal cooling method though.

Yes, in that case taking of the side of your case CAN help with cooling. I was assuming that he had a few fans running in his case.

I have one fan in my computer and that is the fan on the heatsink for the cpu.
There are no places to put a fan in my computer

So if I got a new PSU, what should I get in watt terms?

You could always drill some holes in the case yourself and mount a fan. Trust me, fans are definitly worth installing.

About your PSU...if it were me, I wouldn't risk it. Return it and buy a 400+w Psu

So a 400+ watt PSU made by ANTEC?
