Purchasing on Steam.

I hope this hasn't been asked before. So before you flame me, I'll apologize now, if it has been. Just one this is left lingering in my mind about how this will work.

How will we actually pay for the game through steam? I know it's by credit card, np. But as far as the account info, honestly, I can't even begin to remember when I opened the account, much less, if I gave them a credit card number (which would probably be an old one by now).

I purchased Half Life 1 when it was first released, but for some reason when I log into my Steam account, it says I have Platinum Edition priviledges? So I can play everthing almost except for Condition Zero I think. And when I went to the steam website to look up my account info, I can't find a link to actually give me any pertenant information concerning my home address (which hopefully the hat, posters, stickers, soundtrack, etc. will be mailed to), or any credit card info, for which I will be billed.

So, it has me thinking it does not have any of this information, and that hopefully it will give me an option to submit it when it comes time to purchase.

Can anyone verify this?

Again, I apologize if this has been asked before and/or it's in the wrong area. I don't frequent this forum, and honestly, I just discovered it a couple of weeks ago. :)

Thanks in advance,
Vhayne

i dont remember giving any info when i signed up for steam...
even if you did, i imagine that they would confirm it before you finalized your purchase

don't worry about it. as long as you can login to your steam account you're good...and if you've got access to HL platinum, take it. i'm sure they'll re-confirm everything before you purchase, as they've got to get your addy info correct to charge a CC anyway..then you can prob either use that addy for shipping any additional applicable items or specify an alternate shipping address.

i wouldn't worry about it.

I've had Steam since the Beta, and I have pretty much every game, except CZ.

The reason everyone has the Platinum Edition of Half Life is because the key algorithm for Half Life (regular) and the Platinum Edition are the same. Basically, Valve can't tell based on the CD keys (that comes with every boxed copy of the game) whether you bought regular or Platinum.

I'm pretty sure that they are devising (or have already finished) a system where they can differentiate the five retail packages for Half Life 2. They'll probably also implement a system to input your address into steam so they'll be able to know where to send their Gold Edition goodies.

I WANT HL2 I WANT HL2 :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: (adhd at its finest)

Wish they would tell us how much so I can either go and pre-order the DVD or wait to buy it over steam...surely they would know the pricing structure by now???

this brings up another question. like if for some reason you buy two copies. one: you get the gold steam edition to get EVERYTHING. then you buy a retail to have a hard install copy. if you paid and registered with the steam copy, but install the hard copy, would it still see your access to like dod:S?

Purchasing the game and the details contained on your Steam account are all irrelevant.

You don't have to have used a credit card on it before, you don't have to have any personal information stored on your account.

All you need to do is enter in your credit card number, expiry dates, name on the card and billing address and it will work. As for the billing a dress sometimes not being an address you want it delivered to (maybe a parent's house, work etc.) maybe they plan on adding a "ship to" address too. That'd make more sense.

Yes it should do. You will own DOD:Source after purchasing the gold package, so no matter if you install a cheaper version of Half-Life 2, it will still remember you have DOD:Source.

thats a very interesting question... Chris_D can we bugger u to get an answer from Valve about this please?
i'd email them myself but they have only ever answered one of ten emails i sent them.. so my success rate sucks.

i am particularly interested because i will be in the situation described by Rocketman9mm.

The way steam works is there is a list of users and next to that is a list of the games they are entitled to use*, so if you buy gold edition on steam, it will add all the appropriate games (HL2 DOD:S etc etc) next to your name on the list. Then when you install HL2 from disk it will just say "Ah, already owns this" and will treat it the same as if you had downloaded it through steam.

Basically, what Chris_D said was true. Trust him, he knows about what he speaks ('cos hes a sad fanboy ;))

*Not actually how steam works, its all databasey type stuff, but the analogys quite accurate.

Yeah, you'll notice on the Browse Games list that it will show you all the standalones and all the packages available on Steam.

You might only technically have owned Counter-Strike, but on there it shows that you actually own all game packages and all individual games (minus Condition Zero).

Thanks for your responses guys. I do appreciate it. I'm happy to know they Valve isn't going to charge some old card, and ship my stuff to the wrong location. :)
