Been checking up on upcoming games and QuakeIV is by far the one I am most anticipating. Unfortunately it is a greatly misunderstood game, mostly because it is using Doom3 tech which itself is widely misunderstood. So many people think that since it is using Doom3 tech it must be a cramped corridor crawling slow paced shooter with 4 player MP, which is just the opposite of what QuakeIV really is. Here are the more interesting tidbits I could find, followed by some screenshots.
I know some of you might already have heard all of this info, but I'm sure there are others who havn't so I'm posting it anyway.
Storyline
The story line is a direct sequel to QuakeII, which picks up only hours after the end of QuakeII.
The events of QuakeII will be recapped via a cinimatic.
"The entire game is set on the stronghold of Stroggos."........"The action of the game is to penetrate deeper and deeper into the core of the Stroggos civilization. They've got some big secrets down there. [under the planet's surface]"
Gameplay/Character Interaction
QuakeIV is not a survival-horror game as Doom3 was, it is an all out action game focused on fast paced and adrenaline rushing gameplay.
"It's over the top, crazy action" - Willits.
This is not a go it alone shooter like Doom3. "You'll almost always be in the company of fellow Marines, and embroiled in a huge Military campaign with other characters who talk, feel, opine, and react."
"Most of the time, you'll be fighting as a part of a squad of Marines and getting to know your fellow cannon-fodder, so you'll have a considerable emotional investment in the quirks of each character."
"Right off the bat, from the mass invasion mission that opens the game, QuakeIV will seek to definitively answer the question "Whats so different from Doom3?" When you first gawk at the gargantuan outdoor landscape of embattled Stroggos...you'll know your not in the Doom Mars base anymore."
"You'll be fighting alone, with an army, indoors, outdoors, in vehicles - you name it"
A.I.
"Don't be surprised if your enemies turn out to be tactically sharp thinkers."
"We wan't them all to have unique attacks that will immediately register on you" Willits explains. "You're used to seeing an enemy in Quake and knowing right away, bam, what that guy intends to do to you. the difference here in QuakeIV is that these guys are working in a coordinated way, so that if you see one guy you'll know he wants to come right up and bash you in the face, but his budy is going to hang back and shoot from a distance. and together, they make a tough combination."
"We're also told that Raven is paying a lot of attention to AI routines and situational level design in QuakeIV. In other words, baddies will seek out cover more effectively than their predecessors in Quake and QuakeII, while different enemy types will use their environments to their own best advantage."
Atmosphere
"The feeling you get is of being a small part in a larger, ongoing war that is raging around you at all times. In the epic set-piece battles (such as the opening level, in which you and dozens of fellow marines invade Stroggos in a Saving Private Ryan-style assault) you'll feel like your just one hard fighting cog in humanity's war machine. Starships bombard the landscape, fighter jets blaze through the skies, and enemy vehicles and infantry take the fight to you on the ground. Even when the action seems slow, the overall war doesn't. You'll be safe for the moment in a marine-held compound undergroud, when a massive explosion will rock the surface and shake the walls. Everywhere you go the conflict will be a constant, looming presence."
The gore will not be toned down from Doom3. there will be frequent blood smears and splatters, as well as a trek through the meat factory where humans are "churned into grist for the Strogg mill".
"You can count on a few massive-scale grotesqueries that are garunteed to be show-stoppers. I got a look at just one of these set-piece horrors: a mega-sized heart that pulses as the driving force of a Storgg bio-factory - and it will make you wince in disgust. I mean, were talking about a five story tall heart that bellow like a torture victim as a set of giant electrodes jolts it tino sped-up beating. This and other nasty visions will be par for the course in the nightmarish Strogg order"
The environments will vary greatly, taking you both indoors and outdoors into the expansive Stroggos terrain "each with a wildly different style of gameplay. This is the game that ought to smash
the perception that the Doom3 engine is confined only to hallways."
The surface of Stroggos is "a rugged, Mars-like landscape that would look at home in Starship Troopers."
"the feeling I was left with after watching several levels of the game played through. is that QuakeIV will be a more human, plot-driven game......... The detal etched into each of the human faces, the emotional impact of visceral all-out combat, and the trench warfare diologue delivered with exquisite lip-synching and facial animations, all combine to invest QuakeIV with a "you are there" immediacy."
"....a gameworld where raw feeling becomes the prime mover of the experience, transcending Quake's reputation as a mindless shooter with pretty pictures."
Multiplayer
While the Singleplayer will get more attention, Raven intends to deliver a multiplayer mode capable of satisfying the very demanding Quake community. The QuakeIV multiplayer will be a "recreation of the Quake III: Arena experience with the new engine."
They intend to keep the Multiplayer gameplay Quake style, so no plans as yet to include vehicles in the MP game modes. They seem to not want to associate the MP with games like Battlefield and other vehicle intensive MP games. They want to keep it Quake.
Raven assures us the player limit will be much higher than four. :E
Graphics
The Doom3 technology used in QuakeIV has been tweaked, including lighting and texture enhancements.
I guess the screenshots speak for themselves. As advanced as the graphics are, the visual style either appeals to you or it doesn't.
BTW, the Quotes are taken from either of the only two mag previews of QuakeIV that I know of. As for release date, it is expected sometime in 2005. I suspect they will want it's release to be before or atleast coincide with Quakeon2005, so that the first QuakeIV tourneys an begin the same year of it's release. The Quakecon2005 date isn't even set, so they might even hold off on it until QuakeIV is released. Just my speculations.
