From the QuakeLive beta site:
First, we want to thank everyone who has been playing, testing, providing feedback, inviting friends and hopefully enjoying the QUAKE LIVE closed beta. We've grown considerably over the past 6 months and are now excited to announce that we're opening QUAKE LIVE to the general public as an open beta the evening of Tuesday, February 24th. On Monday morning (U.S. central time) we'll be taking beta.quakelive.com down for about 36 hours and then opening to the public at www.quakelive.com on Tuesday evening.

Coordinated with the open beta will be a stats wipe and pruning of player accounts, however we want to make it as easy as possible for all of you to transition over. On Monday, we will be deleting the player accounts of people that have not played in the last 28 days. If you have played within the past 28 days, you will lose your stats, but will NOT lose your player name, custom settings, profile information, etc.. When the site opens again on Feb. 24th, you will be able to use your current email address and password to login as usual. If you have friends that haven't played recently, but will want to maintain their account, let them know that they should play a game between now an Sunday. After Tuesday, we do not expect to ever completely wipe QUAKE LIVE player stats again.

We're going to post some additional information in the Developer Notes about the opening of the game, what it means to leave the 'beta' tag on the site during this time, and discuss some features and functionality that we're planning for the next couple of months that we know you'll be interested in. This is a very exciting time for the project and we hope that all of you, who have contributed your time and feedback, share in that excitement. We hope all of you continue to be active contributors to the game as we work to make it better for months and years to come.

I don't like it. Mainly because it goes too fast and it mainly says a lot as to why I don't play scout in TF2. Also it deletes the files in the cache. If you automatically remove it when you close the browser, like you go to certain sites so people don't find out you have been there :naughty:, you have to re-download it.

Im in the beta.. played once and aint played it since. It forces you to do this training thing first.. bloody annoying.. I JUST WANT TO PLAY!

They say that installation and registration is quick and easy and you'll be playing moments.

LIES!!!!

this is also the start of the New Moon and I usually look forward to gaming all night then.

Basically this, I ****ing hate forced training bullshit.
Such a chore to go through.

I actually just tried to play this again just now and it said the game had updated so i downloaded the installer again and updated and now it wants me to do the training again **** this!

*uninstalls*

They updated the training. The training is so that everyone joins a server with equally skilled players (sort of). It keeps the freshmen out of the pro servers and vice versa. It's quite important.

We've pretty significantly changed the beginning of the training/skill placement match that you'll normally only see after creating your account. In order to get some good testing on this, we're requiring that everyone re-play that match. It should only take you about 10 minutes, and the update tonight is large, so the game will be downloading while you play anyway.

The new training mode is a lot better. It'll test your movement skills too. Haven't seen many players who actually know what strafe jumping is... They just press the strafe keys and jump... Can I has Halo 3?

They made the forced training so that the skill system will know what your skills are. So we won't get those ego kids who skip training start playing against pros and then say the game is shit just because they are dumb and suck.

What happened to good old purely browser games, without plugins necessary? Makes it so you can't play in places that don't let you install stuff.
I didn't like it anyway.

I wish they will add clan/tournament support when the open beta comes. During the last quakecon the designer gave some nice info regarding the coming features. Like internal clan support, custom tournaments made by the users, private servers, offline (lan) support. Now if only people would stop doing that idiotic halo 3 movement style!! It's not just jump up, it's jump+strafe+mouse!

And some new maps would be nice. They added one map called trinity which was an instant hit. I just hope that ID won't bring back any old maps, ten years playing the same maps is enough. So it won't be 27/7 de_dust...

I'm going to wait this one out until a patch or new release comes out. theres no need to get 1000 viruses because some kid found my IP adress while I was kickin his ass

Oh a waiting queue... Well only 6000 left and then I can play! :p

wow... Just 14k in the queue. They said about 120k have registered today. Nice.

I tried playing from work, dam it they blocked the port number the game is using. :(

Be sure to check #quakelive on quakenet, madness I tell you.

Waiting in a 2hr+ queue for Quake Live has kind of killed the novelty for me considering it was accessibility that was hooking me. Oh well, hopefully they beef up the servers when they get more ad support and it exits beta.

My comp was totally unable to play it at 800x600. :|
I am able to play UT2004 maxed out at 1680x1050 and it's smooth. Has anyone else had performance issues? I would love for this to work for me. I used to play Q3 a ton.

You should check the forums for fps tweaks. Also try r_enablepostprocess "0". I guess these queues were expected. Since most of the beta testers were shit. 80k registered betatesters, on crash test day 1k show up...

Developers said that they will increase server capacity so that there won't be queues.

Runs smooth as silk for me with everything on high. I'm in windowed 1024x768 though.

It's a piece of shit system though. It logs you out with inactivity and puts you at the end of the queue again if you don't notice it's loaded. Give us a ****ing client.

AAAAAHHH

depends alot on what time of the day you log in...

For instance.. I now know the majority of players arent in USA. If I log in during the evening (should be prime time) I only see a queue of like 100 at most. But if I log in during the wee hours of the morning (10am), the queue is like 5000.

Anyway, fun game. I've also seen some videos on youtube of some sweet multihacks in the works already.

I tried to play this at Uni but you can't install the browser plug-in, I may as well have taken my Quake 3 CD in and tried to install it, really, QuakeLive is nothing special. They've basically ressurected a 10 year old game with some profile management, a new server browser and a web launcher.

If you played Q3 you would just end up playing with the 5 other people who still play Q3 and are all using aimbots. ;)

The best feature of this game is a new community around quake.

(I'm only posting this because I'm 5000 in the QL Q)

Well, I don't know if it's just my PC but I can't connect to online games.

Playing with the bots is not too bad though.

They've done huge upgrades to their backbone since the open beta release, so the queue has toned down alot. They will be adding more game servers in more locations soon also (they should probably add some Asian servers, as they will be all over another free game I'm sure).

I played about 100 hours total in the closed beta and I've seen a huge amount of changes in the few months I was in the closed beta. They've fixed a huge amount of bugs and added many useful features in that time. I see it as a large experiment basically as for what the future of gaming might look like. This will definitely be a successful project in the long run.

SOOO for anyone who plays, what is your profile name?

Mine is james_buchanan.

I'm able to connect to online games now, the name is NE0NRETR0.

Just thought id revive this thread to inform you all that the permium game modes and levels are free till thursday if you want to try it out. I found that CTF and Freeze tag was immensely fun! Now if i only didnt spend all my money on rim jobs (not the vehicle type ones)

Wait, CTF is for Premium users only?
You shittin me?
