somewhere in a hl2 thread, someone commented that the 9600 SE was a piece of crap and i have a 9600 SE so i want to know, IS IT a piece of crap? i paid $100 for it last winter and i want to know if the card was worth $100.

Sorry to say, that card is not worth $100. Granted, it was last winter, you could have saved $50 (if even) more and bought a Radeon 9600 Pro.

Ah well, it's not exactly an FX5200 type of bad, but it's not much better.

It was worth the 100 buck, but still is a piece of doody. It's a castrated version of the R 9600(non-XT/PRO) with clock/memory speeds cut in twice. It is dangerous to run a DX9 application on it...:E

Before upgrading your computer, always, alwasy, always, go on a forum and ask their opiniton, cause there are always guys out there that are much wiser than you in computer lore and can safe you from making mistakes. If I wasn't on this forum, I would have had no idea that ATI will run HL2 better than NVidia, at least in the newer videocards.

Keep in mind, the American dollar is stronger than the Canadian. So, if he paid $100 USD, it wasn't worth it.. $100 CAD, it'd be worth it.

you just had to bring Canada into this didn't you!?

i didn't really have a choice. i WANTED the 9600 XT but the graphics card was a christmas present from my parents, they took me to pick out a graphics card and ended up not letting me choose the one i wanted anyway  (it was all i could do to convince them to let me get an ati card instead of a card from one of those no-name companies). but had i known the SE was so bad, i would have fought harder for the 9600xt.
i'm sad now ;(.
one more question though, the card i had before the 9600 was a radeon 9000 which came with the comp. was it worth upgrading from that card or was there such a small difference between them that i was ripped off?
