And when prices do drop you'll probably be able to pick up a 9800 pro, which still gets like 10 FPS more than the 9600 XT. Different core technology and archatecture and stuff. And they'll probably drop in price soon after the next generation graphics cards are unveiled.

9800 Pro for $214. But they are right, if you can wait, wait. It'll be worth it because the 9800 XT's will be less than $300 (or lower) when BTX/PCIX comes out.

XT cards have higher clock speeds, and higher ram speeds... which translates into a few totally unnoticable FPS. its really for nothing more than bragging rights.

an important question that no one really answered is whats the difference between the 128 mb versions of cards and the 256. dont get a 256 cards unless you want 1) bragging rights or 2) high performance video encoding/very high intensive graphics stuff, like modeling and rendering. other than that, there are no games available that will take advantage of that much ram... its a waste of money.
