Mirror's Edge - 5/10

**** this infuriating piece of shit. There's fun to be had, but it's not worth plowing through the trial-and-error platforming, wrestling with the clumsy-at-all-the-wrong-times controls, or gritting your teeth through another unnecessary ****ing combat sequence.

Luigi's Mansion: 8/10

Awesome, awesome game starring Luigi in a haunted house. I just wish it wasn't so short....and easy. The bosses were cool too but there was only 4 of them.

I can't help but to think how much this game is a combination of Alone in the Dark, (The Dreamcast/PS1 version to be exact, not the most recent iteration) Resident Evil, and Mario. (The characters, universe etc. but starring Luigi instead) with only a touch of Zelda, (The treasure chests look EXACTLY like the ones in the Zelda series, plus they appear after you defeat all the enemies in a room, just like in Zelda)

Amazingly creepy for such a cartoony game. It made me wonder how all those ghosts died in their previous lives, especially the baby and the twins. Maybe it was all those damn poison mushrooms that pop up out of nowhere from behind places?

Rune Factory 2 - :O/10

So I'm only on like the third day, but I felt like I had to make a mention of it because this is bordering on an anomaly of some sort.

*ahem*

It's a Harvest Moon game.

It's a Harvest Moon sequel.

It's a sequel to a Harvest Moon game, and several improvements have been made to things that didn't work in the first game, as opposed to just leaving them exactly as they were and instead adding more useless, poorly implemented elements.

:|

Yeah, let that sink in, then try this next part on for size:

The english translation isn't horrible. Infact, I can actually make out what people are saying close to (if not) 100% of the time.
D:

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

Vampires: The Masquerade: Bloodlines 9/10

Having quite a lot of fun with it so far. I really dislike the music in the club, though.

timesplitters 2 : 9/10

i love this series, shooting robofish and the gingerbread man never gets old.

Call of Duty: World at War - 8/10

Half-Life 2: Episode 2 10/10 Yes. It is better than every other Half-Life. Took me 3:42:08

Blitz: The League 2 - 7/10

Difficulty is ****ing bullshit at times. Also, my stomach ****ing dropped like a rock when I saw a testicle rupture for the first time. Holy god damn shit.

Shaun White Snowboarding - 7/10

Collection quests that are required to start off a game are one of the worst design decisions I have ever seen, especially in a game like this.

Half-Life 8.9/10
Brilliant game I just finished it, now moving onto Half-Life 2 :p

Team Fortress 2 9/10

Really fun, but the lack of zombies is an obvious bug they really should've fixed by now

28 days to go...

Sonic Unleashed - 8/10 (temporary)
Its not as awesome as I had hoped but it beats anything Sonic that's come out after SA2 thus far. I'll probably finish it up after my final exams end mid-december, my score may change then.

Portal Prelude
Very mixed feelings about this mod. I loved some chambers and hate others. Basiclly any chamber that involves logical thought, problem solving and trail and error
(the companion cube chamber)
I love and hate ones that just require fiddly jumps
(the one where you gain access to the blue portal, the first one with a g-man appearance).
Out of frustration I noclipped through chamber 19 as I couldn't figure out how to get to the higher area. After that point the game gets absolutly retarded. I'm not sure if I'll bother finishing it. Everything since after 19 has been awful and badly written.

Not that the rest of the game is well written either. The only thing worse than the dialogue is the voice acting. This is seriously some of the worst voice acting I've heard. Worse than Resident ****ing Evil. I didn't think it were possible. I know it was made by a Frenchman but using the infinite resources of the internet could he have found someone who didn't speak English so robotically? I almost burst out laughing when he said in the commentry that he wanted to make sure the player understood that he was being spoken to by people, because when I first started playing I wasn't sure wether it was supposed to be robots or a pre-recording or people talking to me. It's rather obvious when looked at from some angles that the people in the observations booths don't move their lips when dialogue is being spoken and their actions often don't match what is being said to you (eg, one of the guys talks about how he's leaving and then stands perfectly still).

Overall. Good. Not a masterpiece by any stretch. Can't comment on the ending yet as I'm not finished, but the last section of the game has been so terrible that I'm not sure I'll bother.

Dear Titan Quest,

Hack n' slash gets very monotonous after a few hours of nothing but pointing and clicking. At least have a good story or at least make it compelling. You took one of the easiest subjects in mythology and still managed to screw that up. While graphically stunning, especially for a 3/4 top down perspective and having good rag-doll physics, you needed more time in making the game fun to play and the story interesting. Your developer then blamed of their failings on piracy and secured that when they died that gamers would spit on their grave.

6/10

copy/paste from my blog.

Ah yes, the magical time of the year where stores line their shelves with deals that on any other day would make you question whether or not these goods were attained legally.

I made a trek to my local Game Crazy at 6(!) in the morning to scoop up Dark Sector and Rainbow6 Vegas 2 (did PR try saying that title aloud ever?) for the meager price of $10
Being a high school student this was an offer too good to refuse, as I remembered seeing the very first trailer for Dark Sector in the pre-360 days and thinking "Man, I'll have to get that launch day."
But alas, launch day came and it was nowhere to be seen. A couple of years and a story change or two later, Dark Sector arrived under everyones radar, including mine.
I finished Dark Sector in about a day and what i assumed to be around 6-8 hours of gameplay. Although i found it an agreeable experience overall , I'm not sure how i would have felt about it had I paid more than what came out to be about $5 for it.

The game takes place in USSR Russia where some strange virus is turning its victims into metal cyborg creatures who can grow weapons.
First off, let me pause to say I in no way find this to be an undesirable thing. because
A.) cyborgs are awesome and
B.) because growing weapons sounds like a delightful talent
However, the Soviets do not share my enthusiasm about this and have been killing off anyone who gets infected, zombie style.
You play as a slightly whiny special forces/secret agent/runway model/guy who is supposed to keep the infection contained by blowing stuff up(?). However you aren't very good at your job and get caught immediately and impaled by one of the aforementioned cyborg people.

and Presto! your arm gets all shiny and you can throw Link's Boomerang-

oh excuse me, my mistake- the glaive with the greatest of ease. This makes for the key game mechanic in this game. In fact, this is the only thing about the game that keeps it from feeling, looking and playing exactly like a bargain bin Gears of War clone. It has a more convoluted cover system (not to mention an even more convoluted story), a roadie run minus the crouching, and the same "stop and pop" firefighting.
Just. Not as good.

But that's where the glaive comes in, which somehow transforms the game from a Gears clone into a game that plays something like this:

Throw glaive to kill bad guys
Use glaive to finish off bad guys in various gruesome manners
Throw glaive into conveniently placed fires, broken electrical boxes and somewhat random frozen gas canisters to gain a temporary elemental buff and then kill bad guys
Use glaive to solve painful and irritating switch puzzles
Use glaive to-

You get the picture. However, as boring as that sounds on paper, it's actually pretty fun in practice. Throwing the thing and using the Burnout-like aftertouch system to maneuver it into a herd of generic enemies is a satisfying mechanic. If you manage to time it just right, you'll throw the glaive even harder for what is essentially a critical strike, causing even more damage and mayhem.
As the game continued and I started to really get a feel for it, i found myself using my pistol (which you can use in tandem with the glaive in a sort of awkward dual wield system) less and less as it was much easier and more satisfying to merely lop a hazmat's head off than shoot him.
Which is a mixed blessing because the guns, while not particularly unique or fun to use, have a unique mechanic attached to them.
When you pick up a downed foe's weapon a red light (the "infection sensor") on it begins to beep and flash which signals you have precious few seconds to squeeze as many shots off as you can before the gun will spark and billow smoke then cease to function. This puts you in the mindset to use what you've got then move on, solving the age old dilemma of "do i use this weapon now or save it for when i really need it?"

Although these weapons are a lifesaver at the beginning of the game, as it goes on and the enemies become tougher and less human, you find yourself less inclined to use them. It's a pain to get them when they're on the opposite end of the room and dozens of enemies are pouring hot lead towards the cover you're ducked behind, effectively breaking the whole system. Because now the only way to use these guns is to pick them up after the fight.

"After the fight," is a phrase which in this case means "when all the enemies are dead." Which is not a very useful time to have a gun that you can't keep for more than ten seconds.

But aside from these weapons, you come to various spots in the game where you can use money and upgrades strewn about the levels to buy and enhance various handguns and rifles that aren't equiped with those cursed egg timers. Unfortunately, this also manages to somewhat break the glaive system.
Yes, it makes the single bullet point of this game rather useless, because from what i have observed, there are a few guns that if bought and upgraded can kill just about anything in one or two shots. At this point in the game it takes at least two headshots from the glaive to achieve the same thing, but with more work. This put me in a bind as i loved using the glaive but it was such an arduous task to kill even the most basic grunt with.

However this problem only really happens at the very end of the game and by this time you'll have had alot of quality gameplay. All the bosses (except for the second to last one) are a fun to fight and strike an excellent balance between being challenging and satisfying.
After each encounter you gain a new power that falls somewhere in the rang of completely worthless and invaluable. The two best examples are a force field, which sends all bullets ricocheting towards whatever you aim at, and cloaking. While the first one you'll find yourself using alot, the latter feels completely pointless. You can't use it to sneak past groups of enemies because, in typical killbox style, you can't progress until everything is dead. you can't even use it to surprise attack them, because once you fire the cloak goes off and immediately everyone knows right where you are.
The only time i ever found myself using it was when i got caught out in the open by an unexpected assault and needed to desperately find cover. This makes it feel more like the developer's way of saying "sorry we designed this encounter so poorly," rather than a useful addition to your arsenal.

There's also an unexpected vehicle segment involving a four legged robot with really big guns and lots of hapless enemies to pulverize with them. I found myself enjoying these segments alot more than i anticipated, as the Jackal handles nicely, albeit with a slightly inaccurate and large target reticule.

To sum things up, I had a good time with Dark Sector, but I'm very glad it wasn't any longer than it was because had the game continued at the same rate of degradation I think i wouldn't have liked it half as well as I do.
Although i seem very down on this game it's only because for every part that i really liked
there was one or two flaws that rained on my parade like pigeons relieving themselves in mid flight. Had the enemies been more prone to dying via glaive then bullets half of the problems wouldn't of occurred and if the other half of the enemies were more susceptible to bullets than the glaive the other half of the problems wouldn't have occurred.
This strange and somewhat contradictory set of problems makes me feel like something was lost along the long development cycle and various forms the game took.
Which is a shame because the game has alot of good ideas, but their execution makes its average at best.

C+

Test Drive Unlimited - 8/10

Great car models, although the driving feels a bit weird, maybe something to do with the physics engine, overall great fun though.

Call of Duty: World at War (Wii) - 7/10

Would get more if I had the gun holder thing-a-majig. Seems like if I had that it would be easier.. I get raped on multiplayer, yet on the PS3 version I rape others..

Other then that, its very fun, I rented it, but I wouldn't mind buying it.

Deus Ex - 6/10

What the hell are people talking about with this being an amazing game?

The levels consist of concrete walls, a bland decal of New York at night, and grass and some stupid terrorists who don't see you unless you jump out in their faces, and then they yell something and stare at you for like 5 seconds before shooting at you with some random ass weapon (usually a measly pistol, but sometimes A GODDAMN FLAMETHROWER... you can never tell) or they decide to run away. And sometimes there are robots which see you from a mile away and start firing a minigun instantly.

Sound is crap - the pistol sound is basically like what you'd expect someone head-butting a metal door would sound like.

The mouse lags even if your fps is like 100.

The story is pretty good even though it's predictable most of the time. MOST of the time.

Boat animations don't work, the first police boat you get in just floats around at 50 mph.

A large weapon takes up 1/3 of your inventory space.

It takes like 25 seconds to line up even a close shot, unless you're right in the enemy's face - in which case it's better to use a melee weapon.

I went into the women's washroom near my office and I saw a female NPC standing inside a stall with no doors, she said "I'm reporting you, you pervert." and continued to stand there. Later when I went to start another mission, the boss actually told me not to go into the women's washroom anymore. Funny.

I can keep going on and on...

Deus Ex - 6/10
**** you

What the hell are people talking about with this being an amazing game?
It is an amazing game, a bit over hyped, but still.

The levels consist of concrete walls, a bland decal of New York at night, and grass
Concrete walls and bland my ass.
and some stupid terrorists who don't see you unless you jump out in their faces,
It's a stealth games from 2000, the stealth is pretty good for the era..
and then they yell something and stare at you for like 5 seconds before shooting at you with some random ass weapon (usually a measly pistol, but sometimes A GODDAMN FLAMETHROWER... you can never tell)
AI is a bit bugged, but it's an old(er) game.. Also you can usually figure out if they've got a good weapons or not based on where you/they are.. Just use simple logic.
or they decide to run away.
So? If they are dying they usually run, what's wrong with that?
And sometimes there are robots which see you from a mile away and start firing a minigun instantly.
Never happened to me.
Sound is crap - the pistol sound is basically like what you'd expect someone head-butting a metal door would sound like.
Old game.

Your PC, it's fine on mine.
The story is pretty good even though it's predictable most of the time. MOST of the time.
I agree.
Boat animations don't work, the first police boat you get in just floats around at 50 mph.
I don't understand what you mean here.. It only ever shows a boat when it first stats accelerating anyways..
A large weapon takes up 1/3 of your inventory space.
Oh no, a slight realistic feature!

It takes like 25 seconds to line up even a close shot, unless you're right in the enemy's face - in which case it's better to use a melee weapon.
Maybe you should train your skills in the specific weapon.. Train your pistol skill if you suck at aiming with pistols.. That's why the skills are there.

Indeed
I can keep going on and on...
I can too!

It's easy to make fun of what someone else has said, why don't you write something yourself so I can comment on it. YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I'm just kidding, but Deus Ex isn't too great imo.

Seriously, it's not like a 10/10 perfect game, I'd go as far as 8.7/10.

My perfect game would be System Shock 2, now THAT'S the perfect game.

Deus Ex was amazing for it's time, but it's pretty dated now tbh. Still very playable, but for a first-timer I can see it not being particularly impressive.

I'd say that a person just starting it these days wouldnt really like it at all until they are half way through it. Then they get to see the fantastic story, the way their actions earlier play out later, and have the skills and augs to do cool shit. But the early game just builds up too slow for a modern gamer to get into it.

I personally wouldnt be able to enjoy games like Deus Ex now, after some of the games I have played over the past few years, for instance Half-Life got boring for me only my last play through a few months back.

Pure - 8/10

Fun if you play it for a race/event or 2, then some frustrations set in like bike control.

Very over the top. Its like...Tony Hawk games except youre on a quad bike.

Deus Ex is still shit.

Rez HD - 9/10

My ears have been molested by a barrel of SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUNDS.

I don't think I reviewed Bioshock, but here goes.

Bioshock (Xbox 360) - 6.2/10

First off, this game is some ****ing overrated shit. I heard this was supposed to be the best single player game since Half-Life 2. :|
Bioshock is unbelievably long, and mundane in its gameplay. It's story is okay, but definately not worth a movie, like so many gamers want.

Yes! Thank you. At least someone here agrees with me.

Some people I guess...

The Bourne Conspiracy - 7/10

Unless its hand-to-hand combat I dont wanna know. By far the best part of the game. The takedowns just have a 'hell yeah' and 'oooooooh thats gotta hurt' feel to them. Using the environment aswell just makes takedowns oh so much fun.
