REAL Unreal Engine 3 Pic

Okay, I am a bit confused on this PCI Express business.

I have the following specs on my PC:

-AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 processor @ 2.2 GHz
-512 MB of DDR RAM
-GeForce 5600 256 MB AGP video card
-420 Watt MAX Turbolink power supply
-ASUS SK8N motherboard.

Okay, now that I have listed my specs, can anyone tell me exactly what I will need to be able to use a PCI Express video card? Is PCIE so different that I would need an entirely new computer for a PCIE vid card, or can I simply get the PCIE video card and hook it up?

I have read many tech sites and I cannot for the life of me figure out what I need to have a PCI express vid card.

Also, how long do you think this processor that I have will last me before being completely obsolete?

u need a new mobo, son... that why the 6800 ultra has an AGP brother... so people who just spent thousands on new PCs don't have to cry at night

lol. Okay, thanks. I have another question.

So, there's an AGP 6800 Ultra and there's a PCIE 6800 Ultra.
Now, will there be a power difference, if so, by how much?

If there is almost no power difference, then I will stick with AGP, but if there is an extreme power difference, Ill go buy a new motherboard so that I don't cry at night.

I keeps seeing it as twice as fast in all these "canned" benchmarks.....but in alot of actual games its not nearly that fast.

No difference AFA your PSU is concerned.

the benchmarks that have been posted all over the internet are the AGP version... the AGP version was also running the Unreal 3.0 demo... and the AGP version is coming out 1st... so i'm guessing a small one... besides... is a few frames worth the new mobo?

but relooking your specs... you will need a new PSU... at least 480 W according to Anandtech's review

since when has toms been biased against ATI, or for nvidia for that matter? i know the whole intel thing but they have pretty legitimate reviews for graphics cards and other peripherals

awesome..well Source meet your maker :p

heh, well lets just wait to see what the 2006 version of the Source engine looks like. Remember, this is next-gen stuff. It's only been in development for 18 months, and it's aim is to bring the cards of this generation (9800 Pro) to their knees at 640x480 (actual quote). It's only a small glimpse into the future. Also remember that the Source engine was made to keep up with the times, it's made to adapt to new technology. Seeing something of this quality in HL3, running on an updated version of Source wouldn't surprise me one bit. :)

They have always been pro-nvidia. I remember when the 9700 came out.....they played it down as best they could.

the fourms are a buzz over at Anandtech... word is that ATi makes its comeback on the 26th...

OMG, the U3 engine kicks ass.. Christ lots of money certainly gets you a long way, or certainly gives them the incentive.

Maybe I'm an optimist but aren't all those new effects just shader effects? Isn't that what Valve was talking about when they said they'd release updates for Source and also that even modders can write their own shaders? The shadows, normal maps, lighting, etc, all use shaders in the video and isn't that exactly what Valve said we would see in the future when they said they designed Source (also based around shaders) to last about 5 years?
Anyways.... looks awesome.

That was beautiful and amazing.
It is official: ATI and Half-Life 2 now have REAL competition, and its name is Nividia and Unreal3.

But ATI is also cooking something up, and I'm on their mailing list, so it'll be interesting to see these two cards go head-to-head.

Confirming this competition's broad range and effect, even the NY Times has gone far as to do an article on this release.

Lol... I don't think it's fair to compare HL2 and Unreal 3. Unreal 3 is a long ways away by the looks of it.

Yeah, Unreal's level of detail is the sort of stuff we can look forward to in probably three or four years.
I wouldn't be surprised if I'm out of college by then.

The stuff that Nasa has for it's simulations is basically photorealistic - so I hear.

You mean I need a 480 Watt power supply for the AGP version of the graphics card or the PCIE?

*EDIT* yeah, I guess I do... crap, now I have to spend my allowance money on expensive computer parts and a video card...

*edit 2* wow, I found a 500 Watt power supply on ebay for 20 bucks! cool :afro:

HOLY SHIT, NICE SCREENSHOT!
I always thought the Unreal 3 engine was the one UT2004 is using.. Hehe :D

in the review Tech TV did w/ the card, they say a 420 W PSU works fine as long you u don't have like 4 hard drives running off of it or have 2 other grafx cards on it

Oh, then cool.

My computer has a DVD Rom drive, a floppy drive, a CD writer, a small digital thermometer, and 1 single 120 GB hard drive. I guess I'll be cool then. I have only a few things on this baby, because I only use it for games. My dad has a office/homework computer ;) .

Thanks thunder1320 :)

anytime! :D

I would love to see the Unreal 3 engine implemented in a 3rd person beat 'em up action game like Seven Samurai 20XX or Ninja Gaiden.

I think it's illegal to make games like that for the computer. If I do recall only FPSs, RPGs, Strategy Games, TBS Games, Racing Games, Sports Games, MMORPGs, Adventure Games, Puzzle/Card/Casinoe Games, and Edutainment Games were legal.

3rd Person Fighting/Action games, Fighting Games, Platformers, Kart Racing Games, Wacky/Stupid Games, and Dance Games are all only legal on consoles.

did he say it was gonna be for PC

X-Box 2 might be able to run a stripped down version of the engine

and who says they're legal and illegal! there are gret 3rd=person games for PC

Oh yeah you're right. Nevermind then, but I still say my gaming law will go unbroken for eternity.

Is this true? Legal? As in with Law?
Then how did Prince of Persia get on the PC?
Or do you mean hardware legal like the mouse isn't good for swift sword fighting unlike the Xbox controller.

... yes... yes it is. In fact it's a universal law enforced by Interpol and other law enforcement agencies at state and local levels. Prince of Persia caused some pretty hefty fines for all parties involved with the development and distribution of the game. Remember consoles were created for a reason, don't break the law and have the fine men and women at Interpol and other organizations tracking you down for arrest and prosecution. I think he believes me...!

I bet you're one of them! *waves firearm randomly* The establishment is out to channel our society through artificial stimulation and brain-slavery!

Why accuse me?

I didn't. It was a more random and generally implied accusation. That's what fanatics do.
*waves firearm for more eccentric effect*
