realism... what's the point?

DOD 1.3b was dod at its best imo. it was believable as a ww2 environment and cool looking battles, yet arcadey enough for insane amounts of fun.

I probably sound stupid but if all games where Realistic all my favs like; Freespace, Freelancer, HL, Baldurers Gate, Final Fantasy, Future Cop L.A.P.D, AVP, Halo, Myst, blah, blah, blah and blah would utterly suck.

Yay! I love how you "happened" to list Freespace first there. Awesome.

Personally, i'm more interested in the coolness factor than realism.
Since it's pretty much a given that the gameplay will be incredible, there really isn't much to discuss besides gameplay mechanics, and how real it will be, or how cool something is.

Realism can be a lot of fun. Take a look at Ghost Recon.

On the other hand, arcade-ish games are fun. Take a look at Unreal Tournament.

The most important thing in a game is to be consistent. Keeping the same amount of realism/arcade is what makes games like Ghost Recon/Unreal Tournament fun. The game is so consistent that you can create suspension of belief and you become incredible immersed into the game.

Anyone happen to play operation flashpoint? That's just about as realastic as you can get and still be entertaining... and IMO it worked out great. It kinda pushes reaction speed and, to an extent, acuracy to the side and focuses on team strategy.

realism...

I know this is not first person shooter game, but what about Medieval: Total War... I bought the game because I like that time period and it looked pretty cool.. but now that I have it... I cant get into it.....The stadegy part of the game has so many things going on all the time and then once in a while I will jump into a battle, which are pretty cool. But I waste countless hours getting nowhere fast and not knowing what to do next and having sons and daughters born left and right...this game is too real.... and therefore maybe that is why it does not appeal to me...... is Rome:total war going to change that?? with updated graphics and easier gameplay for novices like me in the genre?? where I can have micromanagment be handled automatically?? let me know if I am right about this game being too real too long and drwn out??

You are, but that's the reason for games like Warcraft and Command and Conquer, those games have almost no micromanagement, while games like, Civ, Total War, and Lords of the Relm and such have micromanagement as a core component

Ehh... not shure if you play Warcraft too much... but if your micro sucks... improve or die.

Not that I've played the last three... but that's my 1/2 cents :)

..C&C doesn't have alot of micromanagement, but WarCraft (3, anyway)/StarCraft are basically 100% micromanagement.. as Karis mentioned, if you don't improve it, you'll lose.

lmfao. at 2:50 am that just made me spew ice tea on my keyboard :)
What do you hope the bunny will do? or what is the bunny hoping YOU will do?

I think that every fps should make 2 diff settings (physics, movement speed, accuracy, etc.), and have an option to toggle the realism. I know there are a few already, but i would like see that in more fps. As far as realism goes, i draw the line at climbing a ladder no-handed at mach two while reloading a gun.

Well you won't want to play hl2 then...

A mix of Realism is needed, but not all games need it i.e. Final Fantasy. In Half-Life your battling aliens on Earth is that real? no, and you can perform an amazing amount of acrobatic feats is that real? no, yet there is still that mix of Realism; Physics in Hl2, In HL1 a headshot with a magnum would kill most aliens/humans and many more things.

So... Aliens... Unreal? Renosance cascade, you need to read up... This is a hypothetical, and possible, senario. You can't say it's unrealistic because it's not. Acrobatic feats? HEV suit, need I say more? Half-Life may have been pretty unrealistic at things but Half-Life 2 will correct those wrongs. Please never say HL is aiming for unrealistic stuff.

Dead-Inside you are just plain wrong. HL2 is not supposed to be realistic.

I dont think you have played the last three on my list, I'm talking about managing what crop you plant on a feild! Weather you citizians eat more meat or more vegitarian foods, what you are thinking about is management, not micromanagement

The essence of the balance between realism and gameplay is how easy it is to excuse the unrealisms.

Gordon got shot? Good thing he's got his protective HEV suit and secret military drug injections that can repair compound fractures in seconds! You've just never seen them because they're classified.

Aliens defying physics? Well, they're aliens! And they're not defying physics too much.

Loopholes like that make for balanced fun/realism.
I'm perfectly willing to accept that a fictional Government facility has access to powerful and secret technologies, especially when that fictional facility has been researching aliens for years.

As for climbing a ladder with no hands: I honestly find it very easy to ignore. In most cases, you've got more to worry about.
