Realistic Texture pack (over 2k!)

Are they ever going to make anything in Hammer user friendly?Alot of things require different programs (paint, wally,Nems,Photoshop,Zoners, etc, etc, etc) seems like a big mess!

Can't mapping all be handled in house with 1 or 2 programs?I've spent so many frustrating hours with many of these programs and I say IT SUCKS!!!

It should all be cleaned up

Not really, in my opinion. First of all, Photoshop isn't free, so you can get rid of that in your list. Secondly, those programs are all made by different people or groups, so it would be difficult to make them all one program. Also, they do completely different things, which you should know if you are going to make maps at all, and it would be confusing and strange to have them all be one program. Just make textures with paint and photoshop, convert then to .wads, make your map with Hammer, and compile it with the Batch Compiler and ZHLT.

Just get the Half Life Tool Pack. It has most of the tools you need (except for modelling) to make maps and more.

Totally not free $600 :x are there any cheaper versions of PS?

There's changes coming soon.Half-Life 2 doesn't use WAD files for textures anymore their going to be VMT files? whatever those are.Sounds like mapping could be more user friendly (some new tools). It just seems to me like some changes could be made to make a few things easier.I want that new HAMMER as much as the games.

.jpg's

they're .jpg's. How do I get these files into a wad so I can use them in a map? Or better yet, how do I apply .jpg's to a map?

You actually NEED to put them into a wad file, use Wally. Really easy, just import your jpegs into wally and make a new wad. Tell Hammer to use your new wad, look for your textures in the texture browser. Apply your textures. Enjoy! :)

Awesome texture set!

Would there happen to be a linux tool for creating half life wad files from a set of jpgs? I've searched google without much luck (maybe I'm using the wrong
keywords).

Even though linux isn't too popular in this sense. I imagine there would be something out there for it. Have you tried VERC? Might be someone on there who made one perhaps.

Well I've found source code for a WAD3 reader. I may be able to make a jpg to wad3 writer assuming I can find a jpg reader. :D

O yes. I followed your excellent instructions Dr. Shim. I was just bothered by how hard wally was hitting my home pc and wanted to try a linux solution at work, one without all the 'extras' that Wally has.

Are you suggesting that you ftp the wads to a site where I can host them?

just adding to this.... I am considering batch converting them to .tga, and then the .vmts (thank god for the partial sdk....)

I'd like to put the then massive file online for download, once I'm done... anyone have any ideas for hosting? I can get them on hl2files, probably. any others?

I already did the texture conversion, but I'm still going through and making sure all of the materials act appropriately (concrete makes concrete sounds, shows concrete decals, etc) by setting the type of material in the VMT file. It's a pain in the ass to go through and change it for every texture. Then, there are the surfaces that should be slightly reflective and crap like that. You know, maybe I won't do that extra stuff.

EDIT: The 24bit TGAs weigh in at about 1GB.

added you to my msn... I'd be willing to make bump/spec maps for them...

Thanks for the info guys :D
Lil q, what Dir do I put the .wad file in when iv converted it?
Is it
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\jammydodger13\counter-strike source\cstrike\materials

?

Cheers

wait..... are these textures for HL1 only? are they not good enough for CS S?

wondering, hl2 doesn't use .wad files does it?
anyone got these textures in hl2 format?

is there anyone to get these textures to work for halflife 2 DM?

does anyone know how to get these to work or know a place where to get some good textures for us halflife 2 DM mappers?

Echoing Nomish...

Has anyone found a place to host the HL2 versions of the textures? It seemed like a few people were putting in a tremendous amount of effort to make them, and the the thread trailed off...

Does anyone have them?

Thanks!

What do you mean HL2 textures? do you mean all the ones that are in HL2 and have been decompiled? Cause I can I did that and it is about 2.6 GB total. It was simple but very time consuming. I can upload sections for people if they would like (I delteted the file but I can do it again piece by piece).

I mean the vtf files of the PhotoRealistic textures mentioned at the start of the thread. They are some incredible textures, but most are in jpg format. CybrMan indicated that he had finished converting all of them to vtf and was in the process of setting each one up with appropriate materials flags (concrete for concrete, metal for metals, etc.).

I'm sure I could work on batch converting the jpg's to tga's to vtf's, but it seems that would be a lot of wasted effort at this point. I also know there's no chance I'll ever go through and set all of the material properties up.

actualy the best way to do it I think is to create a bunch of batch files that make the VMTs with the file and have the properties already set in them, this can be done through VTEX via the batch process. all you do now is set the file name to convert in to as follows

enter the drive your steam folder is on

Code:
cd "%sourcesdk%"
bin\vtex X:\...\material folder\*.tga

after you have that written out add the parameters at then of *.tga and you are ready to go. Just run it and you are good. I would suggest adding the -mkdir just in case you have forgotten to make them to where you are compiling to.

Do you know the list of options that can be passed via vmtparam? At the moment, it seems that valv-erc is down, and I can't find a list anywhere...

is wad supported by source engine? or is it only vtf and vmt

WAD files are not directly supported, but I believe you can convert them. I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but I think there is a menu option in Hammer.

Someone on another forum had the answer for me:
Therre are an astounding number of possible settings...

EDIT:
For some reason, the link simply won't work. The surface properties listings can be found at hl2world's wiki.

OK, I have about 1900 textures ready to go now, with surface properties set. They require 172 MB zipped and 220 MB unzipped.

Does anybody know where I might be able to have these hosted?

Hello !
I have converted the photorealistic texture pack for Half life 2

It can be downloaded at: http://nicosoftgames.free.fr
Go to the forum; and on the Half life 2 topic, choose Texture pack

Here, you can download all the texture pack converted for HL²

Tiberius, i can hosted your textures if you want!

Send me a mail at: [email protected] if you accept
but, i dont know how you will send me your textures... lol i'm so stupid

Where do you put all those VMT and VTF files to get them to work in hammer?

Put them in the "materials" directory of the game you are writing a map for.

i.e. to use the textures for death match:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YourUserName\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\materials

Notice that this is not in the Hammer installation path.

I put the textures into the same path but counterstrike source, they still wont show up in hammer?

Could you post your actual path? Feel free to not include the actual user name in the post.

Tiberius, did you just do a quick compile of all these textures? I tried out the metals and in game they weren't metal (HL2: DM).

I have to admit, I hadn't tested them before I got them posted, but I did have all of the surface properties set. I'm seeing the same thing myself... Wood behaves like brick. I went back and checked in the .vmt files, and everything seems to be set correctly.

If anyone figures out what the .vmt should have instead, I will be happy to rerun them. Unfortunately, the setting I used is the only one I've seen referenced....

Check to make sure you didn't extract them to another subdirectory.

i.e.
C:\....\materials\photorealistic\photorealistic_brick won't work
C:\....\materials\photorealistic_brick should work
