Reeeally fast gameplay

I just installed hl2 on my machine, a Compaq presario laptop with a 3400+ clawhammer and 512 megs of ddr400.

My "problem" is that it goes reeeeeally fast. I walk around in the game at least 2-3 times faster than normal. I got online and people were immediately calling "speed hack" - and I know where they're coming from. The gamespeed is totally whacked. In dead-mode, when i follow other players around, it's really jumpy because i'm moving faster than they are.

Anybody know what's up? Maybe i'll post some video or something if anybody wants to see.

youre lucky..................

anyway, i had this problem with hl1... i just hit the computer with a stapler and *BEEEEEEEP* *REBOOT* *SLOWER GAMEPLAY*

Prime numbers? Have you checked out seventeenorbust.com? It might be interesting to you.

ooohh thanks.

note: don't try hitting your comp. it might cause big damage

Well, i just thought of something. I'm using the x86-64 version of windows XP. Would that cause the symptoms i'm having? It's not technically running in 64 bit mode because it installed into the backwards-compatible (x86 program files) directory.

Oh dear.... Some frickin speedhack ,yup :D. I really pity you when you are being called a cheater cause of speedhack altough it is a problem on your comp, but they wont believe you. What if you whould take a video of it while you play, cause it whould be quit hilarious to watch.

Heh... wont he get kicked by the server or something?

Nothing like that would work online, right?

(dumb question - of course not)

Ohhh, a genuine speedrun of HL2!

You can see how annoying Steam is.
Yes, because this is evidently do with steam ... any opportunity, eh?

Sounds like an interesting bug - haven't seen anything like that for a few years now :) Ah, the wonders of non-frame limited games :rolling:

Chances are unless there is a good admin in the server you wont get kicked. Also you can't get banned from people sending in your steam ID.

Now you can see a troll! Steam has nothing to do with this, child. This is a INGAME bug, not a steam bug.

Record a video of it PLEASE!!! Especially in mp and let us count the number of "Haxor" chants! :)

I suggest you contact Valve direct with this one, they might be able to help better than us...mainly coz I haven't heard anyone else mention this since the release.

wow, how the... Well personally I would install xp sp2 and just use that, its ALOT less buggy...

It seems to me not only to be a hl2 bug but also a win64 bug, might also be anyone of those, have you tried other games? If it also happends in other games it would appear to be(primarily?) a Win64 bug.
Did you buy the game in a shop or online?

False.

I hate to admit it, but HL2 ISN'T what I spend most of my time doing. I'm sure this IS a 64 bit bug (and affects more than HL2), but I just haven't noticed anything else as of yet. Overall, I've been really happy with x86-64

If anybody's interested, here's the link

Wow, that IS a new one. I really have no idea, but just wanted to offer my condolences toward your problem.

Have you tried on other computers? Maybe it's some wierd, esoteric setting on yours.

Uh, do you mean Half-Life2? I'm pretty sure about 3 million people have tried it on their computers (lol, sorry). But seriously, I'd really like somebody else to try it out on a 64 bit system.

Is there a command in the console which limits the gamespeed? I remember there was one for GTA 1 on the PC which when you took the "Frame Limiter Off" you went WeeeeSMACK!! into every wall. Immensly funny for a short time though.

First activate cheats using sv_cheats 1.

Then type this: host_timescale <n>, where n is a number. n = 1 for normal gameplay. For you, to reduce the speed to say 50 percent, you'd type: host_timescale 0.5.

Hope it helps. :)

It's a win64 bug. I remember Americas Army having the same issue. If you installed xp64 using a partition just run the normal version of windows.

That solution seems unnervingly easy. Is "cheating" such as that allowed on internet servers? Am I still going to be able to play cs? It seems like people would do that all the time (in the opposit direction as me) to gain a small advantage.

It probably won't be allowed. (I don't play multiplayer games because the ping is just too goddamn high where I live--it's like aiming your gun at someone's head, firing, and finding out thirty seconds later that he's right behind you and... well, you're dead. So I don't know if this cheat officially qualifies as a cheat.) The advantage in question is quite big, because you can still aim at normal speed.

What I'd suggest is that you use this cheat for your single player experience, and keep searching the net for ways to rectify this problem. Or perhaps by the time you finish the game in single player, Valve will have released a patch. :)

the sv_timescale is a server-side cvar, so you'll still be stuck at sv_timescale "1.0" on multiplayer servers.

Although it may look like you run really fast on multiplayer servers, the prediction code should make you snap back to where the server thinks you are every few frames, so it's not that big a cheat ;-)

Could this be the cause of a pirated version of the game?

it's not really about frame limited games these days, more about how the tick routine handles the interval between ticks :)

Ahh yes this reminds me of the good old times whn there wherent any cap in games as to how fast it would run, so it just went as fast as the cpu would take it :D *nostalgic*

Hmm I know its a long shot but did you try putting on vsync? It has fixed a few weird problems of mine.

Oh, yeah I know that. But back in the day....

I also use windows x64, and am having no problems with the 1289 build. What build are you useing? Also I installed it into the normal program file (64bit file area) and have had not problems with it. If you want you can PM me and i can go into a little bit more detail. With out flooding this thread with info that a very small amount of people will use.

Hmm, maybe that's the difference. I'm running build 3790. I found that the newer build had a lot more hardware support and was a helluva lot better overall. For me, upgrading allowed me to install Mcafee Virus Scan, a big benefit!
