Repititive enemy animations

Upon watching Bug Bait several times, I was annoyed that the Ant Lion's and Ant Lion Guard's attack animations had no variety whatsoever. I do hope that they've augmented it since the E3 build. It seems very robotic when the Ant Lions charge the Combine soldiers and take them down. Also, when the Ant Lion Guard busts through the wall, he uses the head butt attack on all three Combine soldiers near him. The only different one was when he charged Freeman. I hate to nitpick, but this does draw back the immersion for me a bit.

I know what you mean, it kind of bothered me too. Although I'd say it's a safe bet that attack animations were probably not on top of Valve's list during that stage of developement, I'm sure AI and making sure the levels worked was. So I'd say they'll have done something about it by now, although we'll never really know until we play it.

well that didnt "bug" me AHHAHAHAHAHA PUN OMGODZER FUNNY ROOFLE!!!!!!!!!!!111oneone

as much as no blood/decals or even contact with the combine soldiers did

i think it looks repetitive because the ant lion guard start looking at gordon after every attack.. perhaps his ai told him that gordon stood there, but then the combine started shooting at him so he had to deal with them first.. and then he charged gordon..
or something

Ugh...hope this doesn't happen when we play it. And I know enemy AI was toned down in the videos (cept' the Trap town one), to show off environment, but I hate how in Tunnels and Barricade the Combine soldiers just stand in one spot shooting at you, not dodging or anything.

Yeah that did annoy me. The other parts of the e3 presentation were superb and then I see this ant lion guard with stupidly repetitive animations and strange AI...

eh and the sound was fuxt with no actualyl contact between em (i checked) with no decals/blood spray

You do know that was because of issues with the demo registering hits before the animation took place and basically everything else that looked ugly was a place holder. This will either not affect or be fixed by the games release.

hmm well maybe they'll add it in later you never know

first of all gabe said the sounds werent finished, the clipping is fixed, and the ai was toned down for the demo. SO just wait and see.

Animations is definitely something I hope to see improved by HL2. I hope this new key frame blending and stuff in the character animations is really used to its full possibility.
I'd especially like to see better animations in multiplay. I've said it before but it would be so cool to see context sensitive animations (ie. crouch+walk under a table= an animation of the player lowering his/her head looking up at the table, but crouch+walk while sneaking up on someone, animation is of player staring at target and ready to attack).

Thought I read somewhere on here that key frame blending wasn't in Half-Life 2.

hahahahahahah for some reason i laughed alot when i read that. im not stoned right now either.

It was awesome when the ant lion jumped over the combine soldier on accident, and the soldier was shooting it when it was in the air.

The ant lion things look like they should be chopping limbs off with the way their "arms" and stuff were, similar to a knife and like apraying mantis or something. I don't think HL2 supports dismemberment... its a design decision, but not a technical limitation.. muahhahahah

None of that bothered me at all, did it bother you in HL1 when all the creatures attacked in the same way, no, so stfu.

Half-Life is also 5 years older and the game overall is less impressive.

Your an idiot animal. Half-Life 1 is 5 yrs+ old. No one expected stuff like that back then. But now we do because you see it in other games and it just becomes "standardized". Games 2 yrs from now will have set standards of what is expected and what isn't.

Not smart?:cheese:

I like being an idiot.

And for the record, could you please name me a game where a generic enemy has more then one melee attack, especially something as primative as an antlion.

I mean, would you be dissapointed if when you got close to the combine soliders they butt you with their gun, except they use the same animation all the time

To be honest, i havn't really seen FPS advance that much since HL1 apart from in terms of graphics. Thats why everone is so excited about HL2, it looks like it's gonna add something new to the genre, along with D3, farcry etc.

Actually, enemies in Half-Life 1 did have different melee attack animations, such as the zombie.

Not my much, the antlions have variations like that don't they?.......DON'T THEY!?;(

as far as the shooting over his head as the ALs attacked, that was done as early as hl 1. I know this because in the big open garg area in the level POWER UP (after the garg was dead), I would spawn small armies of headcrabs to fight squads of marines. Many times a headcrab would fly right over a marine as he kept shooting it with his gun as it flew over his head.

Stop judging the game by old videos.

When Valve first released screens of Half life they were complete garbage but that's just the way Valve works. They release crap to the media then release amazing products to the gaming community.

Thats what you call genius PR.

It's in there, and you've seen it. That's what happens when the strider gets hits with a dresser, and tips a bit while it continue to walk and fire.

It tips a bit? Hmm, didn't pick up on that. I'll have to watch the E3 vid again.

EDIT: I watched it several times and it just looked as if the dresser shattered against it without any noticeable effect on the Strider. I guess you have a better trained eye than me (not being sarcastic; surprising on here, no?).

well i noticed the strider does recoil slightly from the hit.
