Respect your flag!

Patriotism in times of globalization is like using oil for power when you can get Nuclear Fusion.

Patriotism iscolates people too much, and creates a feeling of false security and power, which is why some people are patriotic.. but I really think Iscolation has a backfiring negative effect that just encourages aggressive behaviour. and anyways, were all on just one land mass at the end of the day!. its just you cant see most of it, cause its under water :P.

oh god, 30 Days imprisonment for using the flag for advertising. American's 'pride' themselves on being 'free', but they come up with laws like this. It makes no sense.

Dude, your post totally sugar coats what that states. In states mutilation, having advertisements imprited on it and other such about the flag having something written on it and displayed in desecrating manner. You know lots of people choose to only read posts and disregard links, don't try to lie to forum members like that.

BTW - I don't remember making that law, so don't try to say "American's 'pride' themselves on being 'free', but they come up with laws like this." Which Americans priding ourselves on our freedom is also not true, a lot of Americans hate America and everything about it.

lmao... by the way, that's within the district of columbia for anyone that cared to notice :) that is the SEAT of government, many many jobs there are gov't jobs. you guys figure out the rest. (btw, this same law is not in effect anywhere else in the US as far as i know... rest of the country it's just flag etiquette to not burn the flag or otherwise sully it, but is definitely NOT against the law.)

LOL we engilsh have very similiar laws but there rarely carried out.

Someone posted this on another forum, I found it rather amusing.

I must say this means no disrespect, but I think some American's take the importance of their flag a little too seriously.
like i mentioned in my above post. the entire page that is linked here is merely flag etiquette. (if you're military, i am certain you can get in trouble for it, but that's military... different justice system)

Yeah, what you guys also fail to recognize is that Americans have the political freedom to burn the very flag that represents them. I don't know how many nations you can get away with such a thing in as burning that nation's flag, but the US is one of them.

this english dude in my art class said that it is a jailable offense to slander the queen. the example he used(because the teacher couldn't believe it) was that of the sex pistols a few years ago.

btw, is this really true? sounds kinda strange... maybe the guy was talking out his ass?

People slander the Queen on TV and get away with it, but if she wanted to she could have them executed (oddly enough takeing on the Queen is the only thing in England that can get you executed), just like if she wanted to she could get rid of the goverment but the goverment would probalbly get rid of her first.

Now it's not against the law to 'give your views' on the Queen, as long as they are within limits, but that is correct as far as anyone goes, not just the Queen.

Anyway in the 50's 60's and early to mid 70's bands like The Rolling Stones and The Sex Pistols were getting arrested for speaking their 'minds' on the Queen. I doubt it would happen now though.

The Queen has no real power as such, sure if she was to step in i'm sure she would still carry some weight, but it's all parliment now.

damn, no wonder so many guys in london try to be queen.

JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING! I'M SLEEP DEPRIVED, PLEASE DON'T FLAME ME!!!!

but damn, that's some crazy cool power she's got.

hehe, I think 'executing' people is a bit extreme, the Queen has no where near that much power anymore, certainly not enough to change laws just on a whim because she doesn't like someone.

I don't see what's amusing about that original link. Are we not allowed to have pride in our country and to honor the symbol that represents it? Many veterans of war consider that piece of cloth to be very important indeed.

it was a misunderstanding. they thought it was a law, when it's actually just the regular etiquette guidelines. ...except for that other link. which is only law in DC.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

My old school teacher in Primary was really funny about the Australian flag... but in a jokey sort of way... Ehhh, I dunno.

When some kids were taking the flag down from the flagpost to store it for the night, and dropped it on the ground, he was like, "OMG! Joo n00bs let it touch teh groundzor! That's grounds for teh arrest!". I don't think he was being particularly serious, though...

We're probably going to change our flag sooner or later, anyway...

Did he speak with such 1337ne5s? I doubt he was teh s3riou5 is he was t4lking in teh 1337.

Hmmm... Okay, my opinion: The flag is just a symbol. Sometimes it's fine to disrespect a symbol, just so long as you don't disrespect what it stands for...

[EDIT]: Nah, the 1337 5933|< was added by me in an attempt to enhance the jokiness...

The Queen doesn't have any power these days but technicly it is possible.

"Execute that man!"
"Umm...heighness, you don't have the power to actually have him executed."
"Oh, well, can you have his death certificate say he was executed when he expires?"
"I'll see what I can do." :P

Actually, you can be executed for treason and arson in the docks.

Thats it.

Yep. The Us is the only 1st world country to keep execution.

(although I think treason isn't elligible)

Yarr...this be bad news for the limeys and scurvy mutinists!!!

Nope, another one is killing a swan. Every swan in Great Britain is taken as personal property of the Queen, and can be punished by execution for killing one.

What is China considered?
Ah well, they have execution, but no one gets mad at them. Thy get away with all kinds of crap. Guess it doesn't matter, the US is obviously far worse... :dozey:

China are 3rd/2nd world country, most of the population lives in poverty.

Personally I wouldn't count them as a first world country as most of them live in poverty although i bet the ones higher up have better quality of life than any of us. As the old communist saying goes "Everyones equal, I'm just more equal than you".

you should read Mortiz's post.. ;)

And them cheating - what would u expect, everything's forbidden but that....

Therefore your argument that "china gets away with everything" is obsolete.

I said they get away with all kinds of crap, and because their people live in poverty doesn't mean the UN is chastising them like they have the US. China is in the state it's in due to it's weak incompetent Govt.

What a load of shit.

You can burn the flag, but if you don't pay taxes they haul your ass to prison.

That's if you have a job, house, and other kinds of crap. Homeless bums aren't forced to pay taxes. And what do you mean load of shit?

Oh...about burning flag. Yeah, I don't like it when it's burned, but it's a political freedom...

I thought you were talking bad about going to prison for evading taxes.

I mean everybody thinks America is enshrouded in a veil of patriotism and free will, but in the end it's all just a commercial facade.

Actually, people who are patriotic aren't as common as those who don't or dislike patriotism in the US. I don't see where this image that we're all patriotic comes from.
