Half-Life 2 Update
November 24, 2004, 5:00 pm · valve
The changes in this release are directed at reducing the problem some users are experiencing with sound stuttering. The sound stuttering is not indicative of a sound problem, sound stuttering is only a symptom of texture thrashing on your video card or AGP memory. For information on how to reduce texture thrashing visit this link on our support site:

http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=280

This update will fix sound stuttering that users were experiencing that would last for longer than a few seconds during normal gameplay. This update will also eliminate this same behavior following a quicksave or autosave. There will still be a short pause while the autosave happens, but not the more drawn out stuttering behaivior.

We are still investigating another performance problem on some hardware, which will manifest where the game is getting into a state where performance drops to less than 5 fps and does not recover or crashes.

Next week we will be releasing the Source SDK, along with a surprise for the community.

Am I the only one NOT getting the patch? I mean, I've closed and restarted Steam about 5 times now (the last time being just 10 seconds ago), and it's not giving me anything.

I did the same as well, but the patch is very small, and it quickly updated itself and I didn't notice anything after that.

Try playing now! I know I will!

I hope others won't suffer as I am but I've updated. and delted the altered config files to start fresh and guess what?

IT STILL STUTTERS!!!!
:(

yup,,, I had some other programs I was closing so I didnt see if it downloaded the patch (I assumed it did) but it still stutters

It has seemed to fix my sound stuttering, which is good.

Is there any way to view patch information from STEAM? Update news seems to give no news on upcoming or current updates, so what's the point? Why should people have to hunt around to find answers when the content delivery system should be keeping people informed.

I'm convinced it hasn't patched yet. I mean, when it did the small update on the 19th, I noticed that. When I opened it Steam it said it was updating. It hasn't done that for this patch yet, and I've been opening it and closing it like crazy.

Guys, how exactly is it patching? Does it bring up an "updating" dialogue when you open Steam? What's the deal?

In my case it, it didn't bring anything up because the patch is so small, I didn't even notice it until I checked my steam monitor. And yes, I did have the previous "play offline without your password patch." So that reafrims it, atleast for me.

Stuttering is gone for m! I can't believe it, I just bought HL2 last night, and now it works!!!

I have a geforce 4 ti 4200, runs great on my modest system.

Take Care.

Mine said it was updating STEAM when I double clicked the Steam icon but no mention of the HL2 being patched. I don't think Steam being updated has anything to do with the patch.

'cos this is a game update rather than a steam client update, it won't say "updating" when you fire it up. Mine updated in under 30 seconds and the only way to know is to check "monitor" in the session it updated.

If you restarted steam, you should be updated.

theres no update speed deamon stop dreaming , how do I know this? do I know someting you guys dont? right click half-life 2 in steam and select update news. there are no updates. I also checked monitor and there is nothing.

Do you own an ATI video card? The fix didn't fix anything at my end, so I am assuming it is my Nvidia card and the Nvidia bug.

Excuse me, I am not dreaming. HAlf-life 2 reverted back to 99% in my steam traffic monitor and quickly updated. I shut down steam again and opened it launched half-life 2 and everything works fine.

Just be sure and check with other before falsely accusing me.

Which is exactly why I don't post here often.

Take Care.

ati card
less stuttering
but

STILL STUTTERING LEFT!!!!!!!

Mine has updated something, in monitor it says half-life 2 100 percent and days of defeat 100 percent (as it did when i was downloading cs and hl2). This is for real, something has updated, im off to check.

Wow what a surprise...I have to validate AGAIN for the 4th time since I got it.

If this is the patch we have been waiting for i'm going to ****ing lose it big time, there is no damn change in terms of the first part of the game (train station). It stuttered in all the same places. Well nearly, instead of stuttering twice when i get off the train it only stuttered once when they guy came on the video screen, wow thanks valve, made a world of difference :flame:

That's because it may still be a sound caching issue on some machines, where this patch may have been used to accomodate and ease the pressure somewhat perhaps.

It didn't work on mine, and has seemingly added a whole heap of problems too.

As mentioned by others, when starting HL2 from steam, it updated as evidenced by the 100% in properties changing to something like 99%. Dial up users like me will notice small patches being downloaded.

Yes I do.

(edit)

DELETED

valve punked us, stuttering is same if not WORSE, **** u valve, at least test it out extensively before saying you found a fix

Excellent news, this patch seems to have improved the stuttering i was experiencing, although it hasn't completely removed it, it's alot less noticeable and i can now play through the game again and actually enjoy all the set pieces without having to "wear the map in" first anymore.

Erm, the patch made mine WORSE on the intro. Before I was just getting a slight stutter when G-man faded in and out, now it stutters a lot more and i get static noise. Great. My saved game in Ravenholm seems unaffected by the patch, however it is still stutterring when there is a big explosion. Dammit!

I have an ATI graphics card so it cant be a problem with nVidia graphics, although i have onboard nVidia sound? Whats going on?

well shoot...

I had NO problems before, but after this patch, MASSIVE stuttering, sometimes lasting 20 or more seconds, and my load times trippled...

*Sigh* Valve, it isn't ready yet. :(

Edit: R9800Pro, 768MB Ram, SB Audigy 2 ZS, Athlon XP2600+, WinXP Pro

If your are sure that the patch screwed you, you can simply change the cvar "mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware" to 0.

Thanks Valve- I downloaded your stinkin' patch and now I can't play...

defraged, re-validated, and now I'm one highly p*ssed off person...I want HL2!

Amy

Works great here, great improvement on FPS!

And no auto-save thingie too...;)

For me, the patch remediates 90% of the problem and it's now unnoticeable unless you're specifically looking for it.

Don't forget to change all those stupid settings back to their defaults!

snd_async_fullyasync "0"
snd_mixahead "0.1"
sv_forcepreload "0"
cl_forcepreload "0"

How will these settings hurt?

This is not a patch, you guys. There is no patch. No game update. Read what they posted in the news section very carefully. It's an UPDATE on how to fix the stuttering, which is the result of texture thrashing, which can be SUPPOSEDLY fixed by going to that link they provided.
Everyone got their hopes up...

Same here, it ran better before the patch.

OMG. Yes there is a patch. Gary McTaggart stated so and you can go see the new cvar to boot. "mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware" was not present before this "release" as it states in the news story.

I don't think I was patched at all. I've looked in my monitor and it states "Steam is not currently updating any games" I checked 5 minutes, 1 hour and 1 day nothing. I've right clicked on HL2 hecked update news and the only update I have is dated 8/26/04. So no update for me. THe new site just links you to a doc on how to change your settings by lowing res and stuff. I did not buy this game to play it like it was 1999.

No patch yet. :(

i bet the big suprise is either Day of Defeat Source or HL2DM.
