I picked this game up per the recommendation of various people who said it was pretty good. I'm partway through the game and am about to drop it. Does it suddenly get cooler later on? Did anyone else think the menu GUI was neat but maybe overkill? That the engine/controls left something to be desired? I'm just curious about your thoughts about this game before I write it off completely.

im curious as to what part your at, but yes it does get very good later on. Very epicly good

I'm in the "Pit", scrounging drugs for the cons. :hmph:

That's where I gave the game up. I couldn't be bothered.

No idea. I haven't played it yet, but I hear it's good - just like you, i guess.

Ye I got up to the Pit too, and just couldn't see why this game was good at all... no wait i got just out the pit maybe, not totally sure, i think ive surpressed the memories :p

i liked it, the game had a little bit of everything.

you had rpg type character intereaction

you have a unique and challenging melee system

and simple but effective stealth system

through various parts of the game you fight with your bare hands all the way up to a freaking mech. But the game always switches up so its not an escalation.

You can snap people's necks steven seagal style

you can make someone shoot themselves in the face by counterattacking when they try to riflebutt you

the graphics are good and the textures are sharp

your character although a badass, is not some super freakish mutant who can eat 500 bullets. If you screw up in attacking a assault rifle guard, they will melee you and fire a long point blank burst, and thats it. However when you are engaging in shootouts the gameplay still feels balanced.

One of the few FPS games i've seen to have ricochets, primarily noticable on the minigun in the later stages of the game.

Also, one of the few games where every single weapon has a use. Every damn one. You never have more than 3 or 4 at a time though.
-Hands. You can punch, snap necks, and if timed properly, counter attack an enemy weapon melee attack
-Knuckle duster. (chunk of metal with finger holes, brass knuckles) Essentially they give you stronger punches. useful in early prison fights
-Shiv. (screw driver, scalpel, rusty piece of metal) for knife fighting prisoners, but also later for cutting throats and kidney shanking
-Stick. (baton, bat, rebar) used as a slower alternative to the knife, helpful in one particular boss fight, and later for bashing in small robots
-Pistol. self explanatory
-Assault rifle/Prototype assault rifle. former has a bigger mag and a slower ROF, latter has a smaller mag and a higher rof. Interesting in that for most of the game you can't use these due to dna encoding. Clever move on part of the game makers.
-Shotty. Its a shotty. Not a pump though. You generally make use of it when fighting either hordes of insane cannibal prisoners or hordes of zerg looking critters
-Stungun. My favorite weapon. Essentally a single shot rechargeable long range taser. Most useful way of taking out lights without wasting ammo. Can also paralyze the smaller exo suits for a few seconds.
-minigun. Can't switch weapons when carrying it and you walk real slow. But it has 4000 rounds and puts out a veritable wall of lead complete with sparks and ricochets, only available late in the game.
-Exosuit. only avaiable in the PC version of the game. Basically you go on a rampage with this thing until you cannot progress further without getting out. Fun. Available somewhere mid game.
-Mech. much like the exosuit you go on a rampage, only its a bit more difficult since at certain points you fight other mechs. Best part is the comedic AI commentary on your driving, offering suggestions and critizing you if you suck. Even better is how the NPCs practically crap themselves when they find out you are in a stolen mech. VERY FUN. Avaiable very late in the game.

Seriously, very fun game. It would be like not playing halflife. Only downside is lack of multi and a few compatibility bugs

And the only part i didn't like was the level that takes place in the maze filled with insane anorexic naked prisoners and you only have a shotgun with a damaged flashlight that only has a 5 minute battery. I constantly have to look up a walkthrough cause i always get lost.

Isn't it "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay"?

Nice game, although I expected more after playing the demo.

EDIT: And those anorexic prisoners, as you called them, were damn scary D:

i enjoyed it, some bits dragged a bit too much, the pit part inparticular i guess and it could have done with a few more combat sequences as it was quite short, it looked great too, great use of lighting(hiding in the shadows etc). I really liked the mech part and the final environments were rather neat looking artistically(Cryo Pyramids). A good blend of different gameplay styles.

The pit bit was dull, but you hardly spend a lot of time there anyway. I stopped there for about half a year and went back and pretty much kept playing the rest of the game through. Good stuff.

One of my favorite games ever. It reminded me of a longer Episode 1 in terms of amazing pacing and set pieces. Everything was fine tuned and honed to near perfection. The PIT could get frustrating though, I fortunatly got it on my first try.

yeah the pit is the worst part of the game.....dont worry.....it gets better

There was some part in the sewers with zombies or something - i think there was a time limit, and it was a maze of blue walls that all looked alike, with these undead that get blown into pieces with the shotgun. I didn't like it. I was having trouble at this part of the game and got tired of having to retry this over and over. Out of health, out of ammo, and almost out of time at my quicksave point. I replayed the entire level a few times and still ended up with low resources by the time I got to this maze. Then I sold the game. I think this is the part below the prison? My opinion of the game went from "pretty ****in good" to "pretty ****in average" at this point.

I was also having performance/audio issues with the game that contributed to my displeasure.

There was also this Mech machine thing. I got all prepared for some epic battle, then discovered If I stand in a certain spot, I could kill it without it being able to hit me. There were many places where the AI just sucked.

as I mentioned months ago, its #1 in my top 10 list.

so COOL.

I loved it. Great game and brilliant graphics

only things i disliked were the zombie, anorexic prisoners that others have mentioned and collecting cigarette packets

I liked the pit
and I beated it the first time, offcourse is confusing but the game gets cooler after that

I remember this one part in the game immediately after you escape from the pit and recieve your darkvision, you can find a janitor uniform and walk among the guards without worrying about being shot at. What i did was find guards who were by themselves or where not being looked at, sneak up on them, snap their necks, and hide their bodies. Other guards would sometimes show up and find the body, but since they never saw me actually do it and i wasn't near the body they never suspected me. Then i'd snap their necks.

I carefully necksnapped or shanked each and every guard in that level without having to fire a single shot. The only guard that suspected anything was the one who was standing next to the next to last guard in that entire map when he heard a crunch, turned around, and was promptly beaten to death by moi before he could fire. It was very gratifying and evil.

I loved this game. Simple above avg shooter.

Are you guys kidding me the PIT section was one of the best parts of that game! Dealing with the different prisoners, guards and whatnot gave it this kinda adventure-game vibe that was so refreshing to see in an FPS. Innovative game design. And it also improved the pacing of the game. Most FPS games are like a 10 hour action scene, whereas Riddick was a like a proper story. A game doesn't have to have whizbang gun fights all the way through to be good. Guess the kids these days just don't understand that.

kids these days just play everygame whit a gun in the cover,or any movie related game or sport
and when they play a average boring repetitive game they never get tired of it,like if they just play it to shoot a gun in the tv

I remenber I was playing riddick in a store and I was in the part of the mines where you see a four wheels machine, and a kid was looking me long time like whit interest and asked me "you can drive the car?" I say no and he acted like disapointed and turn back
I dont understand kids
also they allways play gta and allways go around killing people and I cant understand HOW THEY DONT GET BORED OF THAT! seriously

ok, i am getting thoroughly confused by this. I'm pretty sure "The Pit" is the underground sewer zombie shotgun section, not the main prison complex where you get drugs etc for prisoners. Gosh. Anyway, apart from the pit, awesome game. Guns felt a bit weird/inaccurate

to say it again...this game is great! its is on my top 4 list of all fps(riddick, fear, hl2, system shock 2). it got more to it than just run and gun.

I still can't understand how Fear can be such a great game, you all say that :/
I have a brand new copy of it few inches away from the monitor but I just don't see any reasons why to complete it...

FEAR was the most overrated shooter last year.
Because the ending was dammed brilliant, and the ending is what leaves the last impression, so people do not seem to care that the bulk of the game was mostly filler, or the AI just kept the game interesting for them.

Well I loved it. Best combat and AI ever! Very creepy and tense. Cool story and a fantastic ending. Just a really great game in my opinion.

Fear has its own style of shooting and destruction :cheese:

Yeah, I'm calling that the Pit too.

I didn't think the ending was anything special.

One thing i didn't get about Riddick is why he got those new improved eyes. Also, he lied too Jack! :(

FEARS ending was ok. Let's not spend time discussing that game. It's pretty dull compared to the amazing Riddick.

the guns were accurate, you just had to fire in a controlled manner
very controlled manner

if you shoot more that 3 shots at the time the gun will go crazy

From what I've played of F.E.A.R. so far, it owns Riddick, but that's probably because it's running on a more advanced engine. Otherwise, it's just personal preference if one story or the other is better.
