The PC games website Rock, Paper, Shotgun has found itself recreated in the Source engine by James Benson. The video has to be seen to be believed, it shows off the abilities of the Source engine so well. You can watch the video here.

Gordon Freeman doesn't **** around.

Erm...Am I missing something? Isn't that just a few new animations? How does this show off the abilities of the Source engine when any engine can do this?

The Source engine is truly amazing.

Yes the Source engine is incredible, this video is not.
Hats off to the person who created the custom animations, but we already know how versatile the Source engine is. May I ask why this has to be seen to believe, it’s not like we haven't see much more incredible animations and use of the Source engine before.

Looks at "Meet the Spy" - Walks away from this thread.

Or better things from pretty much any other engine.

I still think the Source engine is aging a bit. I mean the size of maps are very limited and it doesn't handle outdoor environments very well. Obviously the graphics are going to get dated as well. I wonder if Valve is working on an updated engine or a completely new one? I think it would be nice to see.

Source is perfect for the types of games that Valve makes. They're not making Battlefield or Oblivion.

Valve go for fun and innovative gameplay over graphics and it works. Look at Portal not one of the best looking games yet still incredibaly fun. That said i think Left4Dead looks great and i don't think some of the newer engines such as Unreal 3 could do any better.

Hey people, I'm the guy who made the animations/video. I wasn't trying to push the boundaries of the source engine or anything, it's just a piece for my reel that I did after reading the rock paper shotgun website a lot. Surprised it got picked up by this website but it's very cool to see my animations linked on here :)

Glad some of you actually liked it

Hey, you should create a mod so we can play Rock, Paper, Scissors against the AI. I love playing that on Alex Kidd on the Sega Master System.

Thanks for signing up and keep up the good work.

Nah mate, we know you weren't and for what it is it's pretty cool. It's just the way it was delivered on the front page.

Good job man, as a video it did make me chuckle. I think the only reason why people (including myself) were saying "This isn't the best example of what the Source engine can do" is because in the post it says "Has to be seen to be believe" and "shows off the abilities of the Source engine so well" which leads us to believe its going to be something like on par with Meet the Spy! I blame the moderators and their "bad" choice of wording ;)

I figured it was just Evo using sarcasm.

To me Source is really a buggy engine that gets a new coat of paint with each new game. Sure it can be upgraded but the bugs still remain from the previous build. It reminds me of this ad:

The tub is still there, but the new shell is placed over it. It's cheap but gives you the look of a new bathroom, without it being a new bathroom. When Valve called HDR "revolutionary" for Source, that had already been in the industry for some time.

Personally I think Episode 3 and Left 4 Dead 2 will be the last games to come out on the Source engine. HL 3, possible episodes and games after that will come out I believe on Source 2. Source 2 may look like Crysis but will be versatile and more mod friendly. Also VAC 2 has been rumored for some time. It's very easy to get around VAC so a VAC 2 with the Source 2 engine should happen.

I predict by the end of this year that HL 3 will be shown on the new Source 2.

*Like in L4D 2, they will have "dynamic weather" in the game. Weather like rain, snow, etc has been in games since 1998 with Counter-Strike.

Shadows appearing through ceilings and walls is one that is all too noticeable.

The video would show the abilities of Source if it would be possible to create such animations in some program like the face poser.

Nice animation anyway.

Is there any basis to this wild speculation, or are you just completely making it up?

it doesn't handle outdoor environments very well.

For me it's the contrary. Imho, the outdoor sequences in the original Half-Life 2, the sense of space and vastness, are still unequaled.
