in the source SDK i noticed a texture for a manhole or a sewerlid or something that has the text SPQR on it...anyone else noticed this? what could it mean?

You dont need the SDK, this texture is on the game, just have to look for it. I saw it in the early stages of Follow Freeman, around the point you see the first strider, just after the hoppers.

Wow cool find! Sort of fits with the idea proposed by some on this forum that City 17 is an archetypal European city. That it contains elements from many cities… As far as I know though this would be the first concrete reference to actual specific place discovered so far. Although city 17 obviously is not Rome… Well I guess the Cyrillic letters could count also as reference to a place… but they don’t provide anything quite that specific. Neat.

Guys I don't know why SPQR is in HL2 but I can tell you now that SPQR stands for "The Senate and People of Rome" not Senate and People of Rome are one. I did Latin for 5 years and never heard it translated like that.
