running

^omg :O
short recoil! Ach, I've heard of you.
*falls to knees*

Shoot, i don't run that much, but i do run roughly 35 minutes every other day. I haven't timed my mile flat out yet, but i know for cross country, i ran the sunken meadow course in 19:12, which is 5k. Sunken meadow is also in the top 20 toughest courses in North America.

...you'd run that time too if you saw the hill aptly named Cardiac. "After that the picnic area and then starting at sea level there is a half mile climb just to the base of Cardiac Hill, which then extends about 200 meters of rather steep, faulty footing terrain."

It's such a cruel course, it opens with a 1200 dash to the very steep snake hill, then another dash to the base of cardiac, then you all cry. I could probably do it quicker, but i just don't have the drive the other runners do. The ones that come across the line, bend over and throw up.

If it's long distance, breath in through the nose, out the mouth. Listen to music, it often helps, for gods sake dont sprint if you are in a long distance race, stay roughly the same pace throughout - Dont start to fast (you'll burn out) or to slowly (Crap finishing time if set distance, or crap distance if its set time.) Keep moving your arms, keep running to the end. When you've finished the run, dont bend over

Edit: Short Recoil are you a long distance runner? Im more of a sprinter myself :D

If you want to lose weight, try not eating for a while. Apparently the average american has enough fat reserves to last them atleast 2 months.

I decided yesterday around 7pm after eating a banana that I would try to not eat any solids for as long as possible, not for any particular reason, just to see if I could. It's 5pm now. I'm feeling pretty hungry, maybe I'll have breakfast tomorrow morning. I figure if those schmucks in Africa can do it for weeks I should do atleast 24 hours. But I let myself have milk and it is damn tasty on an empty stomach.

P.S. about the running, run on grass beside the road/sidewalk. Your knees and shins will thank you for it. If you're only trying to burn fat, time is the key. Your heart rate only probably needs to be elevated enough so that you are sweating, but try to slowly work up to an hour, that is sort of the standard time for doing aerobic work. Add 5 or 10 minutes every week. If you need to walk, I'd recommend slowing your pace down so that you don't tire out. If you're running in the cold, get a pair of really thin gloves, or if you don't care about looks, put socks over your hands. Running in March in Canada turns your hands a sort of grey-blue colour if you don't wear gloves. Tights and long sleeve also help in the cold, although I guess sweats are probably almost as good if you're not into spandex.

Personally, I ran XC in highschool and hated/loved it because it is one of those not fun sports that takes a lot of pain endurance but the endorphin kick is really addictive. Eventually I focused more on rowing, but herniated some discs in my back last year and now bike/swim/climb on a recreational basis. It's nice to have goals and to push yourself to compete and win, but it's also nice to relax and go out drinking on weekends instead of waking up at 4 45am.

BEFORE ANYONE TAKES THAT AS "ADVICE" I MUST SAY:

Don't ever say something like that unless you know what you are talking about, you obviously do not.
Some people come on a forum and take any advice, this is where people form very bad diets.

If you "stop eating" several things will happen.

1.you will actually get FATTER in the long run, after your metabolic rate slows down to a crawl (survival mode, no food) and when you go back to eating even a small meal will almost totally go to fat reserves.
It takes A LOT longer for your metabolic rate to increase than it does to decrease, this is how we have evolved to handle winters etc.

2. You will become ill from not taking in vital everyday vitamins and minerals that are NEEDED to survive, you need vitamins and minerals to convert body fat and food into energy, so much for that idea to lose weight.....

3. If you go without food for a long time (more than a weeK) your stomach will shrink and become less efficient.

There are many other points, basically you will **** up your health.

If anyone needs any PROPER advice on diet, health and fitness, pm me, i am qualified and have studied diet and fitness for 3 years now.

I'm both, i can basically run as required.
I can sprint extremely fast (you've heard all the land rover jokes i bet, well there is truth to that) but i also can run extreme long distance, i like running up mountains and cross country, anywhere up to sort of 16 miles or so, i could do more but there aint a lot of point tbh unless you are doing it for charity or whatever, no health benefits to it.

pfft, not eating isn't going to kill you. Ghandi did it tons, and he's a hero. If you think to the situation in which humans evolved for the first several thousand years, they probably didn't have nicely stocked refrigerators. That means that they ate food when they found it, and you don't eat much of anything in between finding meals. Your body is designed to adapt to whatever situation you put it in. Going a while without food is going to suddenly make you go to the hosptial really sick. Granted after a month without food you'd probably not be in very good condition. But my point was that the constant intake of food from morning till bed time that seems to be the norm in America these days might not be a good idea. I have a friend from Brazil that goes on one meal a day at lunch. He's fine, healthy, not skinny either, just normal.

And what's the average lifespan for malnourished people?

yeah, modern eating is wrong.
That's why i eat perfectly, exactly what my body requires exactly when my body needs it, at the perfect time, none over.
To achieve perfection.

I had a go at you because you tried to give the idea that "stopping eating for a while" would make you lose weight and be good for you......

And whilst some see ghandi as a hero, could he out run me, could he survive in a forest like me, could he swim up a white water torrent like me? (yeah yeah, i'm just being silly on that last one)

Like i said, i've studied it i know what i'm talking about.

perhaps gandhi can't take on a tribe of US marines armed only with his penis like you can, but I doubt you can singlehandedly be responsible for overthrowing the most powerful empire in the world without lifting a finger in violence against them.

I dunno about malnourished in terms of vitamins and minerals, but the lifespan for extremely low calorie diet is pretty high. But it's been proven with mice and many people strongly believe that greatly reducing your daily calories can increase your lifespan by a decade or two. With rats lifespan went from 3yrs to 4yrs, and healthier than other rats. The basic idea is that less food=>lower metabolism=>less cellular activity=>less wear and tear on your body. Basically you live slower if you have less food. Personally I enjoy eating, and wouldn't want to have to be so strict about everything I put in my body.

I run 5 times a week, Sunday to Thursday. Friday and Saturday I just chill, I eat whatever on these 2 days. The other days I eat strictly a healthy breakfast and salad and that's it when I come back from school. I get real pissed when I don't run on my running days. I feel like shit, or if I eat something I am not supposed to on my diet days... I then run harder.

I'm weird like that, LoL.

I've got a horrible addiction. I often run two maybe three times a day.
