After following this trial for the past couple days I have a couple comments that I thought i would share. maybe some of you have the same views
1. Saddam is being tried for the deaths of 140 people which occured in 1982. I don't know if I missed anything, but hasn't Saddam done a lot worse? wasn't there a rumor that he gased his own people? Arn't there more crimes against humanity that this man has caused? Based on certain evidence, is this the only thing we have for a certainty against this man?
2. The trial seems to be very disjointed and unorginized. I can understand that it is being made so by Saddam and his possie but shouldn't this trial be more...professional? Saddam didn't show up to his own trial, that reflects very poorly on the newly established Iraqi judicial system.
3. Why are the judges being so timid? I can understand that the weight of the worlds eyes are on their shoulders but Saddam has no power, he is a prisoner with no rights and should be treated as such.
I can also understand that they have the constant fear of being assasinated but when they are in that courtroom, they are the supream power and should "lay the smackdown on Saddam and company" to let them know that they shouldn't speak out of turn.
4. some of the testimonies seem weak based on what I know of american law (which is extremely limited) But some of those witnesses could not vouch that they saw Saddam at thier torture sessions or that they saw him at all. None the less, Saddam's government did execute these crimes and he is indirectly responsible, but with out direct proof from some of these witnesses.
In all, my conclusion is that even though Saddam is overwhelmingly guilty and will recieve execution, i think the trial overall, is progressing poorly
