Several 3DSMax/XSI questions

Hello everyone! I've been modelling a knife for my friend the past few days with 3DSMax 6 and the mesh is finished. I wanted to make everything myself, including the UV map and skin and down to the final compile, but I'm beginning to doubt my abilities. I am able to model and compile a simple HL1 weapon model, but I don't even know where to begin with this, and I have very little experience with Softimage|XSI. I'd like it to be for the CS:S knife. Here are my questions.

1. What file format can I export from 3DSMax for XSI that will preserve smoothing groups and eventually skin maps?

2. Are there any tutorials for compiling a HL2 model with XSI?

3. Are there any tutorials for UV mapping and skinning a model with 3DSMax 6?

4. Derp?

Here's a problem I've been having with importing a .3DS with XSI, starting with the actual render of the knife, and then the way the perspective view in XSI sees it:

Why is the perspective view distorting it so much? It seems to distort dynamically as I orbit the camera, and it stretches out seemingly infinitely in many directions at the same time.

I truly appreciate all of the help you can offer, and thank you. :)

nope. use cannonfodder's HL2 SMD Exporter for 3ds max:
http://www.chaosincarnate.net/cannonfodder/cftools.php
and then you need to compile the SMD files to HL2 MDL files.
to do this you can either use my programme, which automates the process, or you can "do it by hand". read the modeling tutorials on hl2world to learn how to compile

I believe 3D Studio Max 6 comes with some fine tutorials for most everything from modeling to rendering and everything in between. This would include UVW mapping/skinning. Also when I say I believe what I mean is I know my copy did.
