I went to a shooting range for the first time (first time shooting a gun period) with a friend of mine this weekend. :sniper: We took turns firing about 300 rounds from his Sig (sp?) 9mm.

Man it was awesome. Before I went I never thought I would get into it. I thought it would freak me out or something but it wasn't anything like that. I want to get a gun but my wife's not crazy about the idea, we do have a little girl and another on the way. I don't feel like I need anything for home defense or anything so I would keep it locked up nice and secure unless I was going to the range...

I just have to convince my wife of that.

Anybody else like guns or know of a good but somewhat cheap pistol for a beginner?

looks like a p228, very nice. shooting is great fun and if you really enjoyed it i would recommend picking it up as a hobby. as far as im concerned shooting has always been a good time and once im 21 i plan on getting a pistol myself. i would recommend sitting down with your wife and describing all of the safety precautions you would take. make sure you get a trigger guard as well as a safe, that way you have two lines of defense.

No one trusts me with guns :(
Btw, the picture, very sexy ;-)

I never thought I would trust myself with a gun either but I've never felt more in control of myself than when I was shooting (probobly a major exaggeration)

Sexy? Yea, I've been working out :naughty:

oh, you meant the gun ;(

Actually i meant you
But yea, the gun.. thats far less gay
Good thinking

Have a rocket launcher. It's easy to shoot: just pull the trigger and watch the destruction.

I'd recommend getting more experience with firearms and such before owning a personal one in your home.

If I were you I'd buy a .22 rifle, as you're starting out. Great for starters, you can modify it out to how you'd like. A friend of a friend of mine has a very tricked out little peashooter of one, it's quite cool. If you do buy one, buy a 30 round magazine for it, too, as it is a pain to shove those little rounds in every ten shots.

Personally I'm saving up for an AR15 plinker.

You can find a great deal of choices on the net. I know the laws here allow for it, not sure there, but here- Get in touch with a local gun dealer, and make your selection via the net with a vendor who offers a warranty and possibly a trial. They can ship it to the dealer after you pay them the price of the gun, and then the dealer is under contract to release it to you (the fee they charge is usually about $30, nothing bad.) But if you're in a big enough city, you can find what you're looking for at a local dealer somewhere.

Good luck finding something :]

Edit:
Is that range built towards the setting sun? I certainly hope not, that's not the best planning if so :p

Hell..screw the starting out bullshit...get a 50. cal barret rifle!

Yeah, you could pick the meat off the trees, and you wouldn'y have to skin it or cut off the head!

That $2195 bfg-50 looks unsafe.... it looks like someone made it out of sheet metal and stuck a pistol grip/trigger on it...

But as Rakurai said, a .22 plinker is highly recommended for beginners. 9mm glocks are cheap and fun plinker pistols.

AR-15s are banned without special registration in CA ;(

I'd get started with the classical education, .45ACP and .44 that is.

...don't know about your personal preference though, maybe you'd rather start with the weaker 9mm :)

I liked the way the 9mm felt. I would like to try something else out as well before I decided to buy something. Maybe a .38?

If I remember correctly the range is built facing south. No sun in the eyes.

glocks are cheap and for the most part reliable, they come in small calibers too. My dad has a p228 sig saur, its weak but fun as hell to shoot. But yea get a cheap glock or .22 rifle if you dont want a pistol. .38 is almost the same as the 9mm

I'd get a Sig P226 personally. Most annoying thing when firing off is the gun jamming up. Reliability over everything else.

Another thing on the .50 is AMMO COST! :O

Try stuff, I'm getting my PAL soon and a .22 rifle to begin before I (hopefully) move up to a SIG.

Interested in shotguns, but not in the extra care and precautions they require.

When I fired his SIG it would jam up every once in a while. The shell would get trapped in the slide on the way out. He thought it was maybe because I was a little too jerky when firing.

I've got weak little girlie wrists.

P226 is one of the favoured sidearms by the special forces. Butt ugly, but hella reliable.

Then again, any poorly maintained gun will be unreliable. ;)

Join the army.

heh ...IMO people who're just dying to fire guns would make the worst soldiers ...well unless that is you need a few pawns to lead a suicide charge against an overwhelming or entrenched enemy

I was a week away from being enlisted into the marines 2 years ago, i wasn't joining for the fact of firing guns though.

I don't see why i should need to join the military to be able to use a gun anyway.

Come to america.

If you wanna shoot something really fun, the most fun I had shooting was a M1 Carbine, very little recoil and a lot of fun...the M1A1911 is a fun handgun to shoot.

The upper part of the gun (sorry, I don't know the name in English; I mean the one that moves with each shot, and causes the gun to load another bullet in the chamber) is on the photo in a position that would indicate you either have just shot (however there are no fumes) or ran out of ammo. Am I right or am I just a n00b? correct me if neccessary ^^

It's not far enough to the rear to be racked, that is just a lucky photo 1/2 way through firing (or a screenshot from a vid)

A gun wont always smoke, depends on ammunition and weather type.

If that is racked back then it looks increadibly short stroke.

How much do those guns cost any way?

The sig pictures there, I think cost around 600, but it has the tactical slide raid and some custom grips I believe.

I wasn't taking the picture, so I'm not sure at what point it was taking. But the comment above about the slide not being back far enough was exactly what my buddy said so It must have been during the shot.

I was surprised by the lack of any muzzle flash or fumes. It wasn't what I imagined firing a gun would be like.

Here is another picture where you can see the brass being ejected and there is no fumes visible.
