Many think they shouldn't, no clear reason why, some say its because they aren't in Europe, others say they don't conform to the EU, others just rascist.

They should join. As said by some politicians here in Belgium : It opens a whole new market of millions of traders and potential clients.

**** no we have enough of them in germany already. 2% of the counrty is on europe the rest is is on asia stay out of europe.

Yes, but only when they admit to the Armenian genocide formally, apologise for it, and recognise Cyprus as a nation. After that, it's all cool though.

Lemonking, just because you changed your name doesn't give you the right to be racist scum.

Christ, even the Greeks want them in. Also, it would give the EU some more leverage with the Islamic world if we had a Muslim country join.

I think the real question is whether or not Turkey should still be allowed to exist... after we answer that question maybe we can start talking about them joining the EU

on a side note, I love Turkey Spam

2% is on europe the rest is on on asia?
why dont we invite China and India too?
**** you dont know jack, the turks always provoke fights where I lived
they caused problems in my whole town. You couldnt even go to the Xmas fest
cause all they did get in fights and always the cops hat to come and close down the X-mas fest and they dont even belive in Jesus Christ.and If you get in a fight with one of them they bring there whole friggin family damn cowards

I actually have a few (1-2) turkish friends so dont call me racist:sniper:

Racists always say that they have a black mate, for example, to try and justify their actions.
I don't believe you are a racist, but you're a bit niave IMO. You'd be wise to change your comments to be more politically correct.

Just because of a few bad eggs in your town you judge an entire nation? You know what, there's a lot of turks in my town and they are hard working honest people.

Turkey is georgraphically close to or in Europe even and it is trying hard to meet EU standards. So why shouldn't they be in if they can meet our conditions?

they dont even belive in Jesus Christ
oh noes! They are the anti-Christ! They've ruined christmas again!

no I mean they shouldnt be at X-mas fest :)

I have to agree on that. Some cities in Belgium have degraded very badly into crime and whatnot after loads of immigrants entered Belgium. But those are the bad part : For every immigrant that only wants to do evil, there are five that just want to rebuild their lives, learn Dutch and live a happy life.
They should arrest troublemakers and put them out of the country, and that also applies to Belgians born here, even if they are from a Belgian family, that'll teach crime :p

I liked the name lemonking a lot more.

But it won't work, I actually had to give a presentation countering a friend on why Turky shouldn't join.

Anyway it was about the genocide and cyprus thing.

the EU wants the Turks to reduce the armies iron grip on the country, but if Turky does that then islamist extremist parties will likely take over controll. The image of a secular modern islamist country is only a facade, infact just this century alone the army had to commit a coupe de etat 3 times, last one in the 80'.

It's a big country, and the way it is acting with armenian issue, you might want to ask yourself if you want to have it in, the EU is about compromises, that kind of stuborness is not in place certainly not for a country with so many citizens which will hold a lot of power.
+
Some fear that even when it is in, that Turkeys borders with teh rest of the EU countries would still need to be guarded, thus preventing good trade, becasue of fear that unwanted extremist might slip.

Anyway, I'm for talks, but against Turky's entry to the EU. IMO the talks are important to give turky the message that we are willing, and not to just isolate them and prey they will change. But turky has to realise that working together means compromises.

This is a difficult call.

Many view this as the gateway to better relations with the Middle East as a whole. I truely view the ball as being in Turkey's court....whether they want to accept a Western influence in their economy. It's going to take a lot of compromise....much more from Turkey. THere are a lot of inhibitions on the part of the Europeans, right or wrong, and it's up to Turkey to show them that everything will work for the benefit of the EU as a whole.

He got in a lot of troubel for doing it,btw I just think the EU is a whole other wolrd thats why I dont think they would fit in and also the country is so damn poor it would be a burden for the EU

Well thats totally ****ing retarded. Look how poor Ireland and Spain were when they joined the EU, and now their economies are booming. And I bet you didnt say that when Estonia and Poland joined.

i don't think turkey has any problems with western influences. The whole country has been intentually westernizing itself for a very long time.

besides, turkey created "turkish star wars" and "turkish wizard of oz" any country that makes such awesomely bad movies should be allowed into anything, cause those movies are hilarious.

As much as I support a multicultural society, I still think Turkey has to go through some democratic reforms before joining the EU. They have to, for example, give more power to women and recognize Cyprus as a state of its own.

I dont think Turkey should be allowed in until they sort out their ****ing system.
The human rights abuses in that country under the cover of Religous Dogma is insane. If by 2016(Earliest they can join) it is still not sorted out,Their ascension should be held in limbo till the EU,Its member states aswell as Amnesty International and the UN are satisfied they've changed.

The Economic side I have no problum with, Ireland is a prime example of how the EU has turned around our Economy in the last 20 years and they deserve that kind of help but until they have sorted out their human rights infringing record I say feck 'em.

EDIT: And before I hear any talk of hypocracy, The reason I have such a dislike for turkey joining the EU while it still subjects its people to such acts is because there is a history of similar treatment in Ireland well up to and in some cases beyond our joining the EU. Just look up the "Magdalen Laundries" in google for a general idea of the shit that went on in this country in plain sight while the Blind Christian bastards of this country ignored and condoned. (In the EDIT, "This Country" referes to Ireland)

ireland has benefited enormously from the eu
we're rich now :E

But i believe politically, geographically and sensibly the borders of Europe end on Russia's and Turkey's frontier
Having only 2 neighbours is alot less dangerous than having the 'stans and the Middel east on our doorstep

Turkey should not be allowed EU membership.

. They are not in Europe, why not let Russia join if it dosn't matter?

. They will hinder the proccess of integration. alot.

. They will not recognize the state of Cyprus. (Itself an EU member)

. There military keep up the pretense of Secularism by launch a 'coup' every 10-15 years.

. Should the military fail to stop extremists being elected (The EU wants military spending reduced) we will end up with a Theocracy in the E.U. (a potential unstable Theocracy)

. I do not want the E.U. sharing borders with Iraq. (especially if Turkey was to end up an unstable Theocracy)

. There human rights record, while improving, is still not up to western standards.

. While E.U. membership did wonders for Ireland's economy, what makes people think Turks want to buy E.U. products? or Europeans want Turkish products?

I wouldn't be that suprised if they discussed Russia joining the EU one day.

However should Turkey become a member, I guess it is possible they could become the USA's pawn in the EU. Maybe. :|

The slowing down of E.U. integration will be a large plus for U.S. neocons.

well when it comes to products, the Turks have some dammed fine cuisine.
Oh and its very likely the EU will want to have russia. One of the main reasons the EU is doing these expantions is to be able to stand up to the US and future Chinese power. Thats a big reason for turky. And if we have Russia, with it's big oil supply and enormouse size, it is a big plus.

But since I'm really leftwing, that doesn't mean shit to me.

No way in hell Russia is getting into the EU. Not in a million years. Russia is technically a dictatorship, it would never fit into the EU, never.

You don't understand, there is a big gap between what our polititions( thus corporations) want, and what the avrage joe european wants. Proof of that was the rejection of the EU constitution.
Corruption is very high in the top EU simply cause it's not very transparant, so there money takes the decisions not the will of the people. Hell the US government and the UN combined are less corrupt then brussels.

The EU parliament is elected. People don't want Russia in the EU, and the politicians are bound to follow them unless they don't want to get re-elected. I agree with you though that the EU is very corrupe, but it would never go against the pople like that.

Russia would never get in, its too powerful and would try and dictate the EU, plus Russia is very anti EU as its pulling the former soviet block away from them.

Unless you didnt notice, Israel is part of the EU. And that country is nowhere near europe, and it has heaps of islamic extremists and human rights violations. The EU isnt accepting turkey into their union because of these factors. It's accepting turkey most likely due to the reasons grey fox stated, and pressure from the united states and saudi arabia.
