Silly Name?

I read the articles on the main site, and the one on religion mentioned that Half-Life was a ridiculous name. Half-Life, for you young kids and scientificlly declined people, is the time is takes for half of an element to decay. I cannot relation with this and the game, but it does seem like an appropriate name.

what do the rest of you guy/girl(s) think? If you think it is a bad name, post what you think would have been better. Please do not post joke names.

Could be called Downfall. Or Cascade. Both things happen in both games. Maybe HL2 could be Cascade II: Anarchy. You're kinda being anarchy-ish, taking down the only existing government and all.

nah, Half-Life is perfect imo, it simply fits the game.

Hmm... the name halflife really fits the game. dunno why though...

its gotta be half-life... if it wouldnt be half-life... It wouldnt be the good old half-life... heh

I think it's a great name.

Would you prefer a more accurately descriptive name?

"Now Presenting....Gordon's Adventures in the bowels of Black Mesa Research facility! In this week's episode, Gordon causes a resonance cascade! And Dr Kleiner gets trapped behind a vending machine!"

should of been called "Life that is of a half"

j/k

"omgwtfcrowbarpwn" would have been a great name I would have bought it the moment I saw it with a name like that.

Sounds cool, has no relation to the game. Doesn't need to.

Been discussed countless times.

How about Full-Death or Quarter-Birth? Or FullPlusEvenMore-ReBirth? Nah forget it omgwtfcrowbarpwn is the coolest Name

Valve didn't care about what the name meant, as long as it sounded cool, and fit well with the game. Half-Life fit well, and as a bonus has scientific meaning. They thought about Half-Dead also as an example of some of the other names they thought up.

If it's not Half-Life, then it will never be Half-Life. Half-Life is the one and only name that will ever be used for Half-Life games.....very confusing :p

i think it should be called: hokilominosalukinotloopernutybutfartyfacer 2

Maybe because human life in that game is slowly decaying, by halves.

It does seem strange that Half-Life is a perfect name, maybe because it's different.

It rly needs to be called: "Dude, Come get Pwnd by Combine Soldiers: Super Spectacular Physics Edition w/ Guns and a Crowbar"

But rly..."half-Life" is just an awesome name.

Half-Life seems to fit the game because we've gotten used to it over the time. Anyway, how's about:

-The Chronicles of Gordon
-The Lord of the Goatee: The Return of the One Free Man
-The Gordonator :borg:

The time it takes for an unstable isotope of an element to decay half of it's life.

The teleportation experiments were in the Lambda core, the first game concentrated on a scientific underground facility, the game centers around science, the resistance uses the lambda as their symbol. How much more 'fitting' can you get?

Scientific Mystery, it would probably make a nice movie, but they would have to try.

The game is called Half-Life, yet the symbol for the game is lambda, which is used to represent wavelength.

How does Valve connect the two? Half-Life and wavelength? They're two different things. :x The real symbol for Half-Life is T½.

The half life of radiation is the time it takes a radioactive element to lose half its radioactive-ness (Thats not exactly accurate, but close enough to avoid serious scientific debate). In other works, the half life is the amount of time it takes for half the radioactive atoms to "die".

Perhaps half-life alluded to how quickly half the people in the game died? That fits. Short to...:p

sfc_hoot - lambda - lambda complex. See the connection now?

Yeah, it could be because of the Lambda complex, but as far as I know, the lambda symbol has nothing to do with half-life (as in decay, not the game).

Your absoluty right, it has nothing to do with radiation half life, but they had to pick a symbol of some sort and lambda is fairly prominent throughout the game.

I wonder what does lambda mean? i've heard it is latin.

It's a letter from the Greek alphabet, now used to represent wavelength.

The lowercase lambda is used to represent wavelength and the radioactive decay constant. Please remember that the half-life of a substance is how fast it decays.

half-life=owns

or would prefer something liek Nerf Arena Blast?

The LAMBDA complex was supposedly the guys who clean up the rest of Black Mesa's accidents.

Maybe the wavelengths has to do with a resonance cascade, which sounds like some type of force wave emitted by the ''sample'' reacting with the system.

I'm sure their is a connection.

the game is about science and science biddys so whats the problem

Half-Life = ln 2/λ

Dunno why the character map has such a crappy lambda.
