Sketch pad?

I'll only be doing home sketching really, so anything that's cheap and does the job done is good enough for me.

I'd get a graphire3 then. It'll be a hell of a lot better than buying mine off me :p

I think the tilt isn't available on the graphire, but tbh I haven't really used that atall so far, it doesn't seem as useful as I thought it would be. Doesn't work properly/in the way I'd want in photoshop anyway, and only partially works in Painter by the looks of things. So your not missing it.

Nah, never use tilt either. Traditional techniques are all well n good with real media like brushes and pencils but on a PC they're not necessarily of any use, digitally there are techniques to learn that are just as interesting...

After teaching myself oil painting techniques and developing those for a few years I still remember the awesome power and potential I felt I had in front of me when I first discovered photoshop 2.5 :D mindblowing.

Don't you find you miss the happy accidents of traditional media though?

I like painting on a computer, but I often miss the things that happen when painting with acrylic (oil is too slow drying for me hehe) and using acrylics when I airbrush, if it spits or clogs randomly, it sometimes gives me some idea, just out of an accident. Digital seems too perfect for me sometimes.

Edit: btw, you didn't tell me how cool the eraser was on the Intuos :) Didn't have that before, got used to it quickly.. though i keep catching myself brushing at the tablet or blowing it to get rid of the bits left from erasing lol! :p

heh

again, never use the eraser - easier to use the erase tool or undo. Too much fumbling around with the pen and all that. Besides, erasers should be soft and taste gritty when you eat them.

I used Alkyds, they worked the same as oils but dried fast - before that I used Inks and isograph for illustration work. Happy mistakes still sort of happen but there are other pros using digital, and cons using conventional - I sure as hell don't miss the smell of turps and all the brush cleaning afterwards :D

heh true, can't say I miss cleaning out airbrushes. lost a few cause they didn't get cleaned properly, pretty much had to clean them out between each color change. Was annoying as hell. But I miss the feel of them. The real drawback to airbrushing though were the vibrations, after a few hours your hand aches bad, last for a good day or so. Had to learn to use my right hand with that, just incase it caused permanent damage it wouldn't be my left hand I lost hehe.

so you ARE left handed, I knew it. I could tell.

Had an old De-villbis when I was younger and loved that thing, but the cleaning put me off and I moved to oils - much more feeling went into a painting with those, the colour range was just incredible. And why use a fiddly pain in the ass airbrush when you could paint with a brush like Boris? Yeah, I guess I do miss the feel of a good sable on canvas-board after all.

How'd you know I was left handed? unless I said something before :)

You know the funny part with the airbrushes.. After owning a few, some stupidly expensive. I went and bought an Aztek out of curiosity, and you know what? I ended up liking that more than the others haha. In no small part to it being easier to clean I imagine ;) But the quality from it was really good.

Besides, I paint biomechanics, studied the style since I was young, prefer to do that style. I only do the others cause thats where the money is/was. But my real love is the Giger style, hence the airbrush, apart from the color changes and the cleaning, its more, i dunno, flowing I guess, for me atleast.

No you hadn't mentioned being a lefty, I could tell by your brush strokes - they all go in the opposite direction to mine ;)

Since Alien came out I've liked Giger's work - he's a twisted puppy but his stuff is so atmospheric and bleak, it's good stuff.

ahhh lol you know i never noticed that haha. Might explain why I can't perfectly copy some art. wrong damn hand :D

And yeah Giger is amazing, can't beat his work :)

Well depends, if your serious about using it, then yeah.. If you think your just going to dabble with it now and again and probably end up just putting it in a corner and leaving it, then no. Would be a waste of money.

If your unsure about them, get a Genius tablet. less than £20 these days, play around with it, if you decide you like it, get a better one. Thats what I did, I got a cheap one because I wanted to see if I'd actually use it properly, which I did, so I got myself a proper one.. Did the same with the digital camera, bought a cheap one to see if it would get used much, it didn't, so I saved myself hundreds on not jumping straight in to buy a top of the line one.

thanks for the info, sounds good. kinda wanted one as it would make my random mouse doodles slightly less mousey and slightly more random(what?), but not to be al too serious with. I'm not really an artist but drawing is fun, if something clicks in my head(usually something inane and random) I draw it :P I would probably end up staying on the genius, but using it rabidly :)

It's not amazing, but for messing around it should be fine. Something to learn with anyway.

ooh, thanks, I think I'll be looking into this.

One question: would it be possible to install them without having to use whatever corporation's annoying extra software, i.e. just grab some random drivers and it'll work fine, or is it going to require the extra to be fully functional?

If it's anything like a Wacom you can just install the drivers and it will work straight off.

Like CROM says, should just be able to install the drivers only. Depends what other features that one has, you might end up wanting to install the extra's.
