sky textures-they are terrible (IMHO)!

Hello to everybody,
I don't know if it is me, but I have the feeling that the sky textures are not so good, at least on my pc.
Well I have a pentium 3.0, 1 gig memory, radeon 9800 xt 256 ram, windows xp.
I'm currently able to run the game at the max graphic value for everything, 6x antialias and 16x anisotropic, resolution 1280x1024, but the sky doesn't look so nice.
I can clearly see the "pixels" near the clouds and I was wondering if it is due to my pc or someone else experienced it.
Sadly I don't know how to take a screenshot....

The highest level texture in the skybox doesn't move, yeah. They look nice, but the res is too low, so they don't look all that good in the game. Valve put moving fog at a lower level of the skybox to make the sky appear dynamic, but it isn't really.

If the sky actually moved (and it looked like it does now but with higher res, it would have been a really nice touch.

Personally, I think the sky textures look fine, but then, I've not really spent much time looking at them.

Pretty vs. overall performance. Everything is a compromise.

Well you can always make replacement ones at much much higher resolution so you don't see any pixelating atall.

Just don't make a thread about terrible framerates afterwards is all.

and as a point of comparison...doom 3 doesn't have skies. :)

far cry has a cloudless sky.

I'm personally very excited about STALKER, because if those weather effects are as good as it looks like they are, then we're in for a (GPU-intensive) treat.

Sure, and how happy would you be with the lower framerate and the fact that textures elsewhere had to less detailed?

Anybody ever play Shogo: Mobile Armor Division? That gajme had amazing sky textures - plus the clouds appeared to cast dynamic shadows on the world.

far crys sky isnt cloudless. the clouds dont move either though :dork:

Of all the game's I've played, I think Morrowind has the best skys. That game also features excellent day/night cycles (you can watch the moons come out!) and dynamic weather.

I started a thread in which the discussion of a similar (related) subject took place.

I agree with you: the sky could have been better for a such sofisticated game i.m.h.o.

I never noticed the skies other than noting that they really contributed to the atmosphere. I thought they looked great.

The only sky I have noticed to look really good is Stalker's..I barely even notice HL2's sky, so..take that whatever way you want.

I fail to see the poor sky quality in my screen shots.
In general, the graphics look a little gritty but far from pixelated. Pretty good actually. Looks fine to me. Meh

The sky when you were on the beach with the Ant Lions was disappointing. Really spoiled the mood.

I'll have to have a butchers next time I'm in HL2. So far I've thought they looked great but guess I wasn't looking that hard. Loved the setting sun in Water Hazard though.

Morrowind was purdy. Was that the first game with fancy water in too? When I first got it I was running a Voodoo3 (I use the term 'running' very loosely) and had to turn all details to minimum just to get a slideshow! Now I've upgraded I can see the shinyness!

Make your own
Improve the existing ones
Code a better system

There are your options.

Nah, games had purdy water before Morrowind. I remember the days of running games on a V3 as well, right up till I got my old Radeon 7000.
Gothic owned Morrowind by the way.

following up....

All right guys, thank you for your answers.
Reading your posts, I realized I have to make a clarification about my previous (and first) post.
In my opinion this game is GREAT and the graphic is perfect.
I was only asking if you're experiencing (in other words, if it is normal to have) pixels in the sky, when you have previously selected the maximum options for everything (including graphics).
Now I fell VERY stupid because I'm not actually able to take a screenshot....I pushed many times F5, but I don't see screenshots anywhere in the game's folders (there is actually one called "screenshots" but is empty)...what's wrong???
Anyway, I apoligize for my English, which is far from perfect!

PICTURES...please take a look!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are some pictures I was finally able to take.
Please leave any comment you may have.....

more

i had to reduce the screenshots size to attach them here, but all of them where originally taken with 1280x1204.
So...IS IT NORMAL to have this sky, or is just my machine?
Are you experiencing the same on your computers?????

I'd love to see Shogo remade in Source, or the FEAR engine. Come on Monolith, get your fingers out.

Where's Bob Givnin when you need him?
