In a funny way, nukes have "stopped" world-wars. .

not really ..they just got other smaller nations to fight for them ..iran/iraq, north korea/south korea etc

Exactly, i was refering to World Wars as in catastrophic huge. Now the fear of nukes makes wars smaller and indeed fought by smaller nations.
Less catastrophic on a global scale. :S

yes but they're no less devastating to the local population than the current scenario which sees a disporportionate number of civilian casualties in comparison ..and open conflict at least has some finality to it .. some of these by proxy conflicts stretch on for decades and never seem to have any resolution

I'm just referring to numbers. None of these wars, even combined reach the numbers WW1 or WW2 had.
Without nukes, i'm fairly sure Russian and the US would have spawned another WW.
But all in all i agree, the world is basically no better place, but it is less catastrophic, (for how long though..)
