Smoking.

I'm not a smoker myself, and I don't care if other people smoke. However, I think smoking is bad and and good. Bad because it can cause all sorts of nasty diseases.... Good because it kills people which will mean more Social Security money for me when I'm an old man

completely ot, but kinda interesting:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/yourweight/whatis_stats.shtml

"international obesity task force" that's kinda funny :)

to summarize, italy is the thinnest of the countries listed; US men are the fatty-est with finland closely following, russian women are the fatty-est followed closely by US. the danes and italians are the only people to have a higher percentage of obese men than women. pat, you may be thinking of cholesterol levels. i bet the italians have crazy high cholesterol, i dunno.

hmm.. u forgot that pple who smoke become a burden on the healthcare system as they get older.. and that means more public tax money towards the healthcare system in an area which we can avoid spending money on.. or spend that same money in another area of the healthcare system..hmm..

wait, where do u live again? because if its not Canada, then i guess u can ignore my post.. since im not familar with the healthcare systems of other countries..

You know one joint is about equal to smoking a pack of cigarettes? Smoking sucks

Oh yeah. Good point. I live in the US btw.

Anyway people who already smoke need to smoke more and die already so that I won't have to pay for your healthcare in the coming years.

The difference is...alcohol isnt damaging if you only have it every so often...smoking si.

I hate cigarettes. They seem have enslaved millions, but when you think about it, you're sticking a small stick filled with some foreign plant in your mouth, and then setting it on fire.
Plus, people at work who smoke get about 5 extra breaks a day. So if i want to slack off as much as them, i have to damage my body.

I'm not sure how much damage I take if I smoke less then a pack a year.

I smoke, both the tobacco and the other kind. I like my ciggies, sorry. Its a stupid habit, I know, but a cigarette can be a lifesaver at times.

i think its a really stupid thing to even start. Its like doing drugs without the high, only more dangerous... and destroys u physically.... hmm pros? none. Cons? watch tv long enough and u'll c a commercial soon enough heh. My gf used to smoke but i got her to quit :afro:

The thing is, in the case of the UK, the government doesn't actually want you to quit because of the tax revenues.

Did you know that tax from cigarettes pays for the health service over 5 times over (this was the figure given years ago, and tax on ciggies has risen above the rate of inflation a hell of alot since then). So the argument of smokers clogging up the health service doesn't really wash, sorry (In the case of the UK anyway).

So if you think about it, we owe a free health service and alot more to the ciggarete smokers of this country.

Hurray for smokers allowing us to get free medication !

Now when we ( and obviously they ) get cancer from their smoke we can pop into our free health service and get cured! Hurrah!

Oh wait.. no.. we can't.. CAUSE THE CURE DOESN'T EXIST.

Well, since its 3 months since I gave up smoking today I just wanted to know what everyones views are on smoking? Do you smoke? Have you given up? How hard did you find it? What do you think will happen with regards to smoking in society etc (nyc & belfast both banning smoking in public)?

Personally I used to love smoking cigarettes, but now I've given up I cant imagine ever starting again.

Discuss.

I managed to quit in January. I feel much better, I've got my lung capacity back, and am thinking about getting back into training.

I worked it out, a pack of smokes cost £4.80 in London on average, multiply that by 365 (a pack a day!) makes 1752

I've saved £1752 this year!!
