not sur eif there was a topic on this or not, but I'm posting anyway you crack babies.

Computer Gaming World picked Painkiller over Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 for first person shooter of the year for 2004. I, for one, can totally see where they are coming from and in some respects can agree, but I'd like to hear what you folks think.
 
Can't comment as I've never really played it, but from the previews, reviews and user comments that I've seen, I think a lot of people must be upset with that decision.
 
more of a graphics demo than a game.

I mean, its a neat game, but is more of a graphics demo than a game. I have painkiller and the expansion, and finished the expansion.
Its more like a quake with less fun, but more graphics

I dont like it much. The graphics are slick, but the depth to the game just isn't there. The level graphics are pretty bland. There are some unbelievable parts, but only 2 or 3, and there are some good times, but just a couple.

Half-Life2 is about 100 times better

EDIT: Painkiller is above average. not a bad game but GET OUT, after Half-Life 2, nothing will ever be the same again.
History-Altering.
EDIT EDIT: I would give Painkiller a 6.5-7 and Half-Life 2 a 10
 
IMO Painkiller is only great when it comes to 1on1 Deatmatch...and earning money (1,000,000 who wins all Cpl World Tour Stops!!!)
 
Painkiller wasnt a bad game. Fun once around. But Half-Life 2, Doom 3, FarCry, Riddick were ages ahead of it.
 
Weak, weak, weak decision. HL2 rules, even before DM.

I am so disgusted that I have to complain some more.

Painkiller? game of the year? Over D3 and HL2? I can understand game of the month sure, but, wtf?

Painkiller and the expansion combined aren't half the game half-life 2 is. What a freaking joke man!

I think the publisher of painkiller (dreamcatcher) sent them a big paycheck for game of the year title.

Whether they sold out, or they have bad taste, I will never respect anything Computer Gaming World endorses again.
 
...And that is why Computer Gaming World is the worst published PC gaming magazine on the face of this Earth. Please people, read PC Gamer.
 
PC Gamer isn't any better, They get paid to write good reviews for overhyped games.
I for one applaud Painkiller, I had more fun with that than Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 combined.
Well...HL2 was a bit funner, but you get the idea.
Painkiller had great and innovative weapons, and an excellent Serious Sam feel to it.
I loved it to death.
 
You guys are forgetting FarCry as well, I mean FarCry was better than painkiller!

They've actually probably named perhaps one of the worst FPS games (for a year with a load of good FPS games) as the best. Well, at least Painkiller isn't as bad as Kreed (which I'm surprised CGW didn't give the award to).
 
Some people like mindless shooting. Like ol oringal doom.

I personally didn't care for painkiller....though I would take HL2 over it... painkiller was not bad.

All everyone talks about is that ****ing pathetic excuse for a game!
Good lord.
Good AI(almost TOO good), is all there is to that game.
The rest is extremely annoying jungle warfare and those ****ing mutants.
And very mediocre multiplayer.
I HATE that game, Farcry doesn't deserve shit.

What were they thinking when they picked it? "Ooh, it has oldschool gameplay, and back in the old days EVERYTHING WAS BETTER!! AND NOW IT HAS PRETTY GRAPHICS!! OLDSKOOL + PRETTY = NOSTALGIC ORGASM!!!"?

If u don´t what to use your brain to get in and master the game than it´s no wonder that u hate such games. IMO Far Cry is on pair with Half life 2...than comes a long go nothing...than Doom III...and Painkiller -if you wanna train your instincts, reactions and coordination this game is good in 1on1 MP...FPS of the year- I cant believe it.
 
Painkiller is only fun in short spurts. I mean, the game is basically the same thing the whole way through: Spawn, run to next room, kill 50 enemies, collect souls before they disappear, run to next room, kill 50 enemies, collect souls, run to next room, kill 50 enemies.

The 200ft tall bosses are a treat though.
 
As bad as I ragged on it, to its benefit, It had some fun guns, although unrealistic, they are cool.

But, collecting coins (and souls!) is tedious and only brought the action to a standstill and I refused to go out of my way to collect them.
 
I quite enjoyed painkiller, it returned to the root of what makes great fps games.

-Artistic beuty and flavor
-Blowing shit up
 
Yeah, Painkiller is a fun game, & some of you need to actually play it before biasing it. It's that old-school run-n-gun style where you get .01 seconds to take a breath, you get to blow up stuff for the hell of it, all with great graphics & an understandable story.

Also I like how you collect souls for health instead of medkits. All the guns\weapons were cool too, the Stake Gun was the best. Plus its in teh CPL!!
 
Still, if I were to choose between FarCry and PK, I choose PK. I HATE Far Cry, the voice acting sucks and the enemies too smart and too many

for once I agree with you :p

and I played it on the highest difficulty available to me, which made it all the better. I must admit, I felt hardxcore. Between the bunnyhopping and frantic shooting and half-assed ammo conservation it was quite gleeful.

I must admit, I set this topic up a bit as flamebait :p I quite like CGW, but I thought it'd be amusing to watch about 20 people pounce on painkiller and CGW. gogo experiments in fanboy psyche ;)
 
I could point out that the dislike of Painkiller may not all be fueled by fanboyism but by the game's flaws. However I don't think it would do any good.
 
I've never played played Painkiller so I can't comment on that. I thought HL2 sucked though. Probably one of the few in that camp, but I couldn't care less if I was the only who thought that way.

edit: I think FarCry blows HL2 out of the water. Not one time in HL2 was there a gunfight even remotely as good as the first fight in the FarCry SP demo.

FarCry's only 20 bucks now...
I think I'm gonna go out today and buy it.
I'm only judging it from the demo and what people said.
I sure hope it's going to be worth it...
 
Im tired of people talking about farcrys AI, it wasnt that great...I could stand in a bush with a rocket launcher and they would just walk into me and say in a retarded voice "where did he go?". I could run circles around them throwing rocks at them they wouldnt be able to shoot me because the cant turn fast enough.

I got flanked once, just once. But the guy wasnt able to kill me because I just stood in the nearst bush and suddenly I was invisible :(

I was able to go through a lot of the game with nothing but a machete in hard, I enjoyed the game but the ai really just isnt as good as you all make it out to be.

In my fps game of the year list, it would go like this

Half-life 2 > Farcry > Painkiller > Doom 3 ( I really didn't like doom 3 at all )

I wasn't saying that FarCry's AI was any better or worse than other games out there, including HL2. I mean, you can exploit AI in any game. HL2 has it's share of idiotic AI moments. Every game does. I try to play how I envision the developers want me to play.

I'm just saying that for me personally I enjoyed the firefights in FarCry much, much more. Not to mention it was longer, harder and much less linear than HL2. It definitely had it's bad spots too, don't get me wrong. It's far from a perfect game. I would have prefered no mutants, but HL2 had aliens so what's the difference. The level design and level size were nice too I thought. Choices of stealth or heavy combat and a mini map that shows sound. All of that led me to a more enjoyable experience.

To each their own though.
 
Ij ust don't like farcry cause the difficulties are irritating. Let me explain, for examply hl2 you had the part in the prison where you had to set up those turrets, now playing normally that part would be hard as hell, but if your smart you can get pretty easy, thats the kind of a challenges I like.
In farcry on the other hand they make the monsters ****ing hard to kill, and the tactics you use for it are just stupid, Iit's just not fun playing after a while. In hl2 you could use a barrel as cover wth your gravgun, in farcry its the same old, flank them shoot, then hide or your dead, and I don't like enemies that just won't die, I'd rather have 10 weaker than one ****ing strong. In other words farcry just gets irritating after a while, and whats up with those stupid mutated monkyes, they like swing at you from 3 meters away and yet still miraculusly hit you, wtf.

Painkiller, may not have had an AI, but the game left you to use good and smart tacticsd against oponents, you could use your brain a lot, a lot more then in farcry.
 
I gave up after the third level. Usually if I don't like a game I'll atleast give it until 5.
