so is there a way to tell the speed of download...

use steam's monitor window. right click the tray icon and select monitor.

wasn't the monitor initally a selection in steam's main menu? why did they take it out? it's very useful..

This probably could've been found with a search dude. :)

afaik it's still there.

okay but it seems weird. says i'm getting it at 360 kb/s but the percentage moves up very slowly...even for a file this size...whats the story?

If you started at 51% like you should have, then that's why it's moving slow. It's going to move 2x as slow as it would if you started with 0%.

Hmm I started @ 51%. And I'm going at around 400+kb/s (kilobit) which is a little less than my maximum. 6% left.

looks like smash finally noticed that halflife2.net is way better than steam forums :p

Bah Alec_85! You should be lucky you're getting that at all with your swedish big intenet thingies! Even when I get my 1mbps broadband I will most likely only reach 200-kb/s! You should email your ISP and get them to make an office or two in the UK to provide net like that! They would make so much profit!

By the way: I expect they will be updating the actual steam user interface for when HL2 comes out to provide better... stuff...

i still dont like it that valve took off the limit steam usage and pause all downloads functions. they just went missing after the cs:s beta took off

probably could have been found by just thinking to click the system tray icon

huh? why..some kind of retarded programming?

Nope, you're the retarded one. Just think of it:

Previously, approx. 1 gigabyte was 100%. Now, 2 gigabytes is 100%. You already have 1 gigabyte of precached stuff, so you have 100% of previous preload which means you have 50% of everything. Since the total amount is twice as much as it used to be and the counter is already in 50%, it takes twice as long for the percentage counter to change than it took earlier.

In case you didn't understand what I just said, I suggest you get back to school and learn some basic math.

PS. Writing drunk is hard.

okay toolbox boy...i know all about the filesize and download speed. ur the only one thinking about that...time to move on now...but anyways...i don't care if this is a 5 g file i'm getting...its going slow...it's on 53% right now and its been downloading since about 30 minutes before i started this thread...2% at 360kb/s u should know with ur l33t math skillz that its going too slow...

Divide the number the Steam monitor gives you by 8 to get your d/l speed in kb/s. Stupid Valve made it differently, I dunno why.

So you are, in reality, downloading at 45 kb/s.

That's why it is so slow.

ah...it's just retarded programming like i said...it says kb/s...but its really not?

kbs = kilobits per second
kBs = kilobytes per second

Capitalization isn't just for fun.

EDIT: Don't try cooking either if the difference between T and t isn't clear. :)

and why the hell is it so slow? 45KB is just unacceptable...my isp has the goods too...

Maybe because you're not the only one downloading?

Why are you in such a rush to download it? Be patient, it will get there eventually.

With the preload, it's better for a lot of people to get it slowly than a few people to get it fast.

i guess what thru me off was i usually get download speeds of 360KB and when i saw the 360 i assumed...

but i still think its gay it reports as bits instead of bytes...

That's true. It's not like you are in any rush to get it. I think we still got some time until HL2 comes out.

it is, but you have to right-click the icon to get it. it was a lot more intuitive when the monitor option was in the main steam menu.

I was downloading the first preload at 500kbps and it got done pretty fast, 25 minutes. The fastest I’ve ever downloaded a 1 gig file. This is almost another gig (972mb) and it finished fast again. I don't think the speed is incorrect and steam is far from slow, from what I’ve seen so far.

:E I only have 0.5 Mbit atm. Will be getting 8.0 Mbit (through the phoneline!) soon hopefully.

It's strange that no companies expand their services to for example UK. UK is much larger than little Sweden :) Oh and 0.5 million Swedes download around 15 million movies via broadband every year. Around 80% of all Swedish broadband usage is illegal  and noone's doing anything about it. Strange.

It's going to move 2x as slow as it would before phase 2. It goes at the same speed regardless of how much content you have already downloaded. :)

Mine doesn't even download.

I click continue, a little "verifying steam cache files" window comes up, and then it closes right away (no progress shows), and brings me back to the main HL2 Preload window.
