I'm 18 and am being kicked out of my home, because my parents are moving down to southern of sweden (I'm staying here in Uppsala which is in the middle of sweden). I need to finish high school etc, and I just found a pretty nice apartment quite close to my school. I dont have to pay for broadband or TV or anything since a family owns it, they basically bought it, i just have to pay for the rent.

I've tried applying for payment for the rent of my apartment, but the government refuse to pay any more than a third, since I still live in the same area as my school. I don't quite understand the logic as I need money to pay the rent as much living here as living 300 miles from my school. But my parents are going to help me out, and I'll be getting the usual student subsidiares.. But I won't exactly be able to afford eating out every single night..

But I actually think it's going to be quite nice moving on my own. I have no idea how I'm going to finance my synth fetish but I suppose it will work out somehow. I'm going to try and get into online poker or a weekend job of some sort, even though it seems to be hard as **** to get one around here.

My friends think it's pretty insane (both in a good and bad way), I'll live much closer to one of my closest friends who I have gotten abit out of touch because of us not living close, but now we'll be able to crash at my apartment, so it's pretty nice.

Any tips for making it out in the wild, any cheap recipes or food you can recommend? I just hope I won't forget to buy toilet paper or stuff like that.. and washing my clothes + doing all the dishes is going to suck abit, lol

dont buy a car if you dont absolutely need ..save money so that you can buy your own apartment ..you'll never save if you're paying rent

Dont spend a lot of money. Im in a sticky situation here, after only about 4 months on my own .

As for food, go to a warehouse store. I dont know what stores are over there, but here in the US there are places like BJ's, Sams club, Costco etc. that sell in bulk amounts for cheap. You can get like 8 boxes of mac and cheese for the price of two boxes at retail (just an example). Usually you need to pay for membership, but you will probably save that much or more on your first purchase.

Biggest tip I can give is to mind your wallet. Now that you are on your own, you will be paying for a lot more stuff and if you dont keep track of it all, you might mess up and overdraft your checking account or something (personal experience :thumbs.

Yeah, I'd say go cautious with your money at first, until you figure out how much your outgoings are each month, if you have a lot left at the end of each month, then you know you can start to spend a bit more (or save).

I'm not great at making my own food but I'm learning that stuff now. pasta seems to be really cheap, meatballs too. vegetables and such stuff is nice, i'll probably keep buying protein shakes.. At first I was like, "oh, i'll just get ready made meals", but if it's that much cheaper making your own food i'll probably drop that idea.

I think I'm really good at being economical, i save up if I have reasons to, and I can live on existential minimum if it means I can save up money for stuff.

If you pay rent, all the money you pay has just dissapeard. Try saving up for the minimum for a loan. You'll still have to pay X per month, but atleast that money goes into paying for your house. The only money you loose is the interest on the loan, which is what? 4-6% these days? And when you've paid your loan, hey presto! You've got an appartment worth 100,000€! which you can either sell when moving out, or could start renting it. But if you pay rent for the same amount of time that you pay off your loan, you've just given away bucketloads of cash and gotten nothing in return(well, except for a place to live in for X amount of time).

Anyway good for you...Altough being independent means you got to do everything yourself and you'll notice that it's a lot. And you need to do it over and over...Cooking, dish washing, cleaning, clothes washing, paying your bills, garbage, minor chores,...

Make one-pot recipes: Asian recipies and pasta's and eat out of the coockingpot...just 1 item to wash

Wait a couple of days...I'tll be one big dishwash but it'll be faster than 3 short ones.

If you have friends that come along make sure they don't mess up your place and if they do...make m clean...Hell, they would expect the same won't they?

And for washing your clothes... A washing salon is pretty expensive so try to make a bargain with your neighbour. And use the cheapest product...they're all the same believe me...

Some simple recipies:

Cook pasta in a bowl. Bake some bacon-strips in a pan. Mix some eggs, parmezan cheese and normal one with some cream. Salt and pepper. When pasta is good, Mix it with the cold sauce and bacon-strips. Et voila Carbonara

Same thing but with smoked salmon (< do not bake it).

Experiment with the wok

You know those sandwiches you can buy and after 10mins in the oven you have a fresh and warm bread.
Cut them n two... Add tomatoes, smoked ham and some Gouda-cheese...then for 10min in oven 210°C cheap and lovely

There's a thousand ways to make an omelet

Another weird thing is that I got more money now than when I lived at home. I study at the University so I a lot of money from the different student grants but still... feels like I got more money now than ever

Don't get stuff you dont need.

If you're in Uni, then talk to the people doing reseach there. They are always looking for people and they pay you for it (~$16,5/hour and up depending on your education and how long you been studying... thats on my uni on computer game related research... can/will differ on other places). also... you get to play with high-tech stuff
