Valve is going to be releasing CS:S beta as a perk to Cybercafe and CZ users as a method of testing there source engine and netcode prior to the release of Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 although nearing completion will not be the first game that the "masses" get to play on the source engine, Counter-Strike: Source Beta is. Anyone elese find this a bit odd? so in otherwords if CS:S enters beta late this summer and Half-Life 2 wont come out until they recieve a decent amount of feedback all this equades to one thing; Half-Life 2 will not make it's Summer release date (at least my definition of summer). I hope I have sorted this all out properly. Ad anything you like- but do refrain from flames.

i emailed g. newell and jess cliffe tonight asking if CS:S Multiplayer = CZ:S Multiplayer

i hope one or both reply

It's okay. CS:S looks pretty. I will drool while I play it and be happy.

It would appear that Counter-Strike: Source is to be released to finalize the compatability of the Source Engine, Steam, etc., with the public.

At least we'll get something new to play, even if it's just a pretty version of something we've already played to death.

I am looking forward to playing CS:S. It will be a total blast, I think.

I really would prefer it if they just got Half-Life 2 released. Oh well I cant complain with CS:S beta. I hope cz owners get it fast!!

They are probably using CS:S as a testing platform because they don't want to reveal the HL2 MP until HL2 is released.

And I don't see why the would wait to release HL2 until they get feedback on CS:S. The two products are not one and the same. I would be disappointed if VALVe didn't just release CS:S at a later date on Steam.

Makes perfect sense to test the code. Before dropping a bomb you might want to do a couple test runs so you don't end up with a dud but a ka-boom. you get the picture..

So if no one complains, they'll think they've found all the bugs and then Half-Life 2 will be shipped sooner?!?!?!?!?!?

Too bad this is CS were talking about, and every one of the 11 year old "l33ts" will email a list of 1000 things to change. If anything, this will probably push HL2 even further because they will be dealing with things like "omg get rid of the shield!".

ROFL amen.

Hopefully the Cybercafe's and Condition Zero owners are not these people.

That's probably why Valve is only offereing the beta testing exclusivley to these individuals, to filter out all the whiners out there.

O...God please no!!!! :hmph:

Just everyone, realize that while CS:S will be in beta and people will post their feedback, CS and HL2 have seperate internal teams. One product should not affect the other product strictly in terms of balancing gameplay

I think that CS:S will include all the things CS:CZ has. I noticed in a movie of CS:S that you get the riot shield as in CZ riot shield.

CS 1.6 has the riot shield as well.

More evidence to back my claims that HL2 will not see the light of day until at least November.

Yes, it's either preparing the way for a HL2 delay, or they're trying to get something out asap to compete with Doom 3.

If it gets delayed again only Valve are to blame. Giving priority to their marketing scams and whatnot, in my humble opinion they should release HL2 then START on doing things like CS:S, not work on a heap of things at the same time and release all of them late. If I'm wrong I take it all back.

There are two seperate teams at Valve. One works on HL2 and another works on CS:S. One project is not going to have anything to do with delaying the other project as far as I can tell.

as true as that probably is, ur not gonna get rabid HL2 fanboys to understand that and still they will find reasons to get angry at Valve for something.

that said, i hope they get HL2 out the door as soon as possible.

Except for the fact that Valve promised that HL2 and all Source conversions would be realeased at the same time. Kind of puts a damper on the whole Summer thing huh? I lose interest every day. Every single day that I don't have HL2, I lose a small amount of interest.

OH and by the way, I'm not mad at Valve.. We've all waited a year and it's getting frustrating. I just want the game now. I have a lot of respect for Valve, but you know...we are all tired of waiting.

Actually although the models and testures look better I think the map design still sucks. You would have thought that with realistic physics they could get rid of those huge boxes and be a bit more creative that the boring old squares. Be a bit more realistic. I think a CS that has absolutely no jumping would be good. I thought they would have gone for the realistic angle on the source engine. Instead they are still sticking with this arcade crap that clans seem to like. CS caters for the clans. Used to be about realism.

I'm guessing that HL2 will be released, and then CS:S will be released into beta. CZ owners will get it, and I would assume HL2 owners would get it. Then after the beta period CS:S will be released by itself as a seperate product, being less costly than HL2.

I don't know if this is already up and running since I don't really care about it, and I assume it will be when HL2 is released, the people who decide to pay a monthly fee will also get to play the CS:S beta as well as all of the other games.

There's my guess.

CS.. used to be... about.. realism!?!?!?

Yeah, I remember how realistic the betas were.. I remember how ultra realistic CS 1.3 was! Flying through the air, shooting pistols, getting headshots all the way across the maps.. it was the most realistic experience I've ever had. ;)

Anyhow.. the map design is great. They've added extra debris to dust2, as we've seen.. replaced most of the out of place crates with other objects that make more sense (ie. piles of construction bricks, burnt out cars, etc). I personally think it looks leaps and bounds better. The models aren't even the strong point at the moment, because they're still placeholders.

It's been confirmed multiple times the only people to get it will be Cyber Cafés and people that own a copy of CZ. It probably won't be a horribly long beta, either.

Furthermore, Gabe has already indicated that CS:S will be a sort of mass test of the source engine before HL2 comes out. There's little to no chance (strong strong emphasis on no chance) we'll be seeing HL2 before the CS:S beta.

Edit: woops, double post.. meant to copy this and edit my old post, my bad :x

If the majority of the CS community LIKES the arcade feel, why do you think they should change it? CS has a niche in online gaming. If CS were to try and become hyper-realistic, then it would be trying to change that niche, and would probably struggle with it. People play CS because it feels like CS. If it changed, then a lot of people would quit playing. How is that good for business?

If you want realism instead of this "arcade crap", why are you playing CS? There are hundreds of games that strive for realistic gameplay. Go play one of them.

CS:S = :x

I want HL2, not some CS rehash beta 1. If anything, you guys should be fearing beta's.

*cough*steam*cough*

Has he actually said that publicly? That CS:S will definitely be out before HL2? Or is that just the widely accepted idea?

I don't know where it's been confirmed that ONLY CyberCafe customers and CZ owners will get it. I know on steampowered it says they will get it, but not that they will be the only people.

I don't scour the internet looking for this so if you want to prove me wrong, post a link.

Let's just wait and see alright? this speculation won't do any good.

(I linked to this in my previous post as well)

As for the second part of your question,

Can I get access to the beta if I am not part of the Valve Cyber Café Program, and do not own Condition Zero?

No.

This is obviously just another way for Valve to milk even more cash out of what was once a free game that wasnt even designed or developed by Valve. First they buy up CS and sell it in stores, then they commission the development of Condition Zero (what a f*cking yawn-fest that was). Now they announce a CS:S beta and make it available only to people who shell out the cash for CZ (and you can bet your ass there's plenty of people who will pay for CZ just to get the CS:S beta). Then, finally, they will release the full version of CS:S, and charge $35-$45 USD for it.

I dont know who I despise more, Valve or the morons who keep pumping cash into their hands for an old, tired franchise.

Argh! All the people with the stupidity hurts my head! Let's get a few things straight.

CS:S is basically CS 1.6 is the new Source engine. The fundamental map design doesn't change, it will just look a lot prettier and have 'richer' environments. Gameplay will be pretty much the same with the added twist of physics being involved.

The beta begins in 2 weeks for Cyber Cafe peeps and CS:CZ owners. It will last for just 2 weeks. It will be somewhat limited, in that it wont be the entire CS experience, probably just a couple of maps and some bits may be missing. Enough will be present to give the Source engine and the networking code a good test.

Yes, it's true that some people will be getting hold of the Source engine before playing HL2, I think that with people downloading the stolen build and what not, it doesn't make that much of a difference. Whether people get a taste of the engine itself doesn't matter. Honestly, its like playing Medal of Honor:Allied Assault and saying you've played Quake 3. Same engine used in different ways. What HL2 does with the engine will make CS:S look dull.

Edit: IAMELEPHANT - you are a moron. You intentionally troll around with Anti-Valve posting causing a nuisance. You go out of your way to discredit them with your ill-informed opinions when facts and more importantly common sense, dictates you are so very wrong.

Just to correct you on this particular topic. Valve are a company and they'll get all the money they can out of us consumers. They are not holding a gun to our heads making us buy CS:CZ. I would love to play the beta but I wont because I'm not gonna buy a game to play it. I probably wouldn't play it until it was fully finished anyway. They chose CS:CZ owners and the Cyber Cafe Vendors because it gives a decent spectrum of game players and it also rewards CS:CZ owners for actually shelling out for what was once a free game.

The final game will be free to HL2 buyers and the price of a budget game to the rest of us. Again, no gun vs head battles here.

rouge were did you find that 2 weeks until it's available statement? From what I hear it could be some time (late summer) also isint it supposed to be only for cafe people and then after some time made available to cz players.

There is a thread in the Counter Strike: Source forum.
