So, RE5 ...

well i cracked and bought it...
and i'm happy to say that i'm not at all regretting it
i've played about 4 hours and it's easily the most fun i've had playing a co-op game in a long time

I find the pacing really suffers for it too. Constantly having to go to the menu screen(now it is done realtime btw) to combine stuff after every fight.
Crap. I knew they were going to treat the inventory system like this. It was the only gripe I had with RE 4 too.

RE 4's constant menu-jockeying for the appropriate weapon all the time really turned me off.
Thing is, I could re-play RE 1- Code Veronica right now and the menus wouldn't bother me. Probably because I believe old classics are allowed to be outdated. There's no excuse for RE 4 & RE 5 though.

Now that the series is more action-oriented, it would make more since to streamline things a bit more. At least have a 2-weapon quick select sort of like the Mercenaries series where you can access the inventory, choose slots for your weapons and have a button/slot for the nades. I wouldn't mind going to the attache case for other items. If they did this, it would've drastically cut down on how many times the player accesses the inventory. The only difference between this method and Mercenaries of course is the inventory and slots.

Plus, it would've looked much cooler to have character animations for the two-weapon select system where one weapon is either holstered, or on the player's back. The reason why I mentioned quick-select should be this way is because it would look awfully gay to have the entire weapon inventory on quick select because unlike FPSs where you don't see the player from third-person, weapons would have to magically pop-up in the player's hands and the only series that can get away with this of course is GTA.

Also, just because the series is more action oriented doesn't mean the puzzles should be scrapped like in RE 4. They could still do puzzles, but have them set-up in a more realistic, rea-life scenario fashion instead of wolf stones and eagle stones.

The inventory is completely different from the one in RE4 and you can pretty much do weapon quick selects.

So no menu-jockeying for weapons? And how is the character animations handled for this? Do the weapons pop-up in the players hands?

I only played it for a little bit at my friends but it definitely didn't take you to an out of game menu (if it did so without the game stopping it would be a disaster). I don't remember what the animations were like, but I'm sure you could find something on youtube or whatever.

The walking animation looks a little dodgdy at times - think Max Payne's slidy moonwalking - but otherwise everything is fine. I haven't noticed the weapon switching animations - which is a good thing, if they sucked it'd be obvious - and do like the way you can see your character carrying their weapons on their back. You can assign 4 weapons/items for quick select on the d-pad.

So far RE5 has been great. It needs a human partner as much as games like CS, TF2 and L4D need humans rather than bots. i.e. whether you play the game in co-op or solo completely makes or breaks the experience. Sections I played through alone than seemed painfully average were transformed into greatness when playing a friend. Everything that makes the game so suited to co-op (limited fov, slow pace, the need to cover each other and communicate) don't work in single player.

As a single player game RE4 works better because it's not hindered by dodgy friendly ai (let's face it - friendly ai always sucks), but with a friend RE5 comes together in a very cool way.

That guy is a total ****ing idiot.

Edit: Nvm, he's just an idiot

if he's an idiot, what are you?
at least he has the guts to put his face on yt and share his opinion. and he showed how stupid the ai is.

For one thing judging from that video he hasn't even played the game. For another thing I've played the game and the AI isn't like that at all, that had to have been some super buggy example of RE5 put on to youtube. Third, he constantly reminds us of his intelligence level via comments like, "The zombies aren't even fast, that's what makes zombies zombies!", "The resident evil movies are pretty good", and my personal favorite, his often repeated "They're black, they don't even look like zombies, they're black!".

And lol at "the guts to put his face on you tube".

Another great co-op session last night. RE5 is easily one of the best co-op games there has been. Single player is iffy. Co-op is great fun. It's a shit load better than Gears of War 1 & 2 in co-op.

My god, that game looks AWFUL. Even if the AI is actually better than it looks etc, its still a complete joke, rather than classic Resident Evil (rummaging around abandoned mansions or facilities etc, low on ammo, looking for clues, solving puzzles with zombies hiding in corners or jumping you as you enter a door, the real feeling of insecurity and of being completely alone), its turned into an action scene from the Matrix or something.

I actually cannot believe what they have done to that series.

Played the demo, wasn't too impressed. First mission involved me running around in a circle as endless waves of enemies came after me and the second had me die at the hands of the chainsaw guy because of the clunky controls and camera angles.

That makes five Resident Evil games I've not been able to get into now, all because of the same reasons. Eh, was quite taken in by the hype for this one, too. Glad I got the demo. I might have to give it a shot on co-op first, though.

Do give it a try. My experience of the demo was the same - running round and round, avoiding the bad guys. With a mate, however, it's running into a building, holding up as the zombies come in, then the wall explodes as the axe guy destroys the building and we slowly cover each other as we retreat, always stopping and helping each other as we move to the next safe zone. The experience couldn't be more different.

If you don't like the controls, fair enough. They were the same with RE4, but a bunch of ppl didn't get on with them then either. The limited camera angle is one of the things that really makes co-op work well, though. It would be the worse game with a more standard fov as it's that that forces you to stick together and communicate. In no other game have I had to scream 'they're right ****ing behind you' before trying to save my buddy with a few well placed shots. The way shots to different body parts result in different context sensitive smack downs (which can be linked into a mighty 3 hit combo if you're both on the ball) is great. As is planning what to do with your weapons in the 'buying sessions' between levels. If you have a mate who's into the co-op side of things (most randoms you meet online aren't) then this is about as good as it gets at the moment.

See? This game has nothing to do with Resident Evil.

COMBO TIME!!!!

Why do people keep going on about how these aren't proper Resident Evil games? Is any one actually expecting one to pop out of thin air or something? They're fun for what they are and if you don't like it then that's your opinion.

Edit: 2nd post down, 4th video, Spoony's take on RE5
http://www.spoonyexperiment.com/

I agree with him for the most part.

I agree with him for the most part.

Agreed. The only part I disagree with is when he said Gow 1 & 2 have much better co-op. Really, when it comes to actual co-op, working with friend and teaming up together, RE5 slays them in co-op. It's not even close. The rest is pretty accurate. This is just RE4 in HD with co-op, it just so happens that RE4 was really suited to co-op and nobody knew till now.

good, but not OMG awesome!!!11!!

unozero: shooting down other peoples opinions in place of facts since 2088.

Warbie, I'll give it a shot. I'd like to enjoy it - I really would - as I never got into Resi 4 and that pissed me off how much I just couldn't enjoy it, so we'll see.

You know, I was incredibly positively surprised by the full version, at first I was dissappointed because there was so much rehashed ideas, concepts, settings etc(Such as ruins) from RE4, BUT, it's GREAT in co-op, both the main campaign and even more so, Mercenaries.

Any person who remotely enjoyed RE4 should get RE5.

Oh yeah, that's true. I have very little experience with Gears, or 360 games at all, but I wasn't very impressed with it's co-op, seeing as it was pretty much standard fare.

Pretty much this.

I posted a ****ing link with test scores which confirm my opinion so yeah.

No, you stated that the game wasn't ''OMG awesome'' as if it was some kind of fact based around what a review site says.

Have you played the game?

What? You posted a link confirming that abunch of other people agree with you..good job who ****in cares......... Thats why its called an opinion...

I bought it today together with Saints row 2.

Im saving Resident Evil for tomorrow when a buddie is stoping by.

I kinda liked Saints.

the demo yeah.

The part with the fence just retarded as ****

Im gonna rent the game next week though...

You made the implication that every one was saying it was "The best game ever!!!111!!". And no one really is.

Also, if you want to stop being called out on 90% of your posts, just spelling out words and using proper grammar makes your point much clearer.

Let me get this straight. You believe that because some reviews don't claim the game to be ''OMG awesome'', then you also believe that it isn't ''OMG awesome'', even though you've only played the demo?

Alright, fair enough.

No I'm having more fun with you stalking me.

Yeah, I really don't need to follow up on this guy. Even if he has enough valid points to convince me not to play the game, he alienates the viewer to the point where no one really cares what he has to say.

good choice!
SR2 is another fun co-op game

Even if I didn't like the game I wouldn't post this guy to support my view. He played the demo of a game built from the ground up to be played in co-op in single player and based his review on that. Duh :) That alone makes nearly everything he says redundant.

It was a poor choice of demo on Capcom's part, though. The demo levels, especially the first, are not a good indication of how the full game plays. It's actually quite different, more measured, more focussed on co-op.
