Some info on ATi/AMD's R600

So many mixed views on it, really pissing me off. Just get it out so I can decide proper.

Im getting my computer this summer so il just wait and see which card wins. Right now im set for the 8800 GTS 640MB, but if the price drops il get the GTX one, but if the new ATI card is better than the GTX and same price then il get that one. So its just to wait and see....

HD 2950XTX (r650) 65nm in Q3 2007 So is this the part of the new set for the fall refresh or just a new model for the late spring launch cards?

If it's part of the fall refresh then the timing is expected. But if it's part of the late launch then won't there be even better cards coming right behind it? :D
The team(s) that worked on the X1800(R520)/HD2900(r600) seems to be a little behind. How late do you think the R700 will be? lol

So do you guys think Newegg will carry the XT on monday the 14th?

Grr I'm gonna sue those ****ing assholes if it ends up much cheaper and faster than the 8800gtx I just bought.

Sounds like someone was an Eager Ernie :p

It'd be awesome if they were cheaper and faster. Though I'm still gonna wait for the fall 65nm refresh before I buy. Then I can get a 45nm Core 2 Quadro and a 65nm X2950XT.

Is it not normal for a card to get ousted from it's position by a newer card every 6 months or so? (doesn't matter same or different company) What brand of GTX did you get?

I find it funny Nvidia now has a card named 8500. ATI also had a 8500 card. hehe
That was awhile ago though (before it's 9700 series).

Well I heard bad news all over the place, how it barely compared to the 8800gts and the gtx was still champion, which would also have made nvidia price their 8800ultra so damn high... So I thought it was a pretty safe deal.

Anyway I got a Sparkle 8800gtx for 499eur (shipping uncluded). Which was the cheapest 8800gtx available.

T-Break has a nice short review.
ocworkbench.com has a review as well. But take it with a grain of salt. They used different filter settings for each card for AA/AF. Why I do not know...

Some of the reviews show ATI has some good potential. Between GTX and GTS performance with some games and similar to the GTS with others. Although it looks like ATI is held back in other games as well, probably from driver issues. I'm sure they are working on ironing out what is causing the slow down. I can't remember which game but it seemed to have a big slow down with AA enabled. (HL2, battlefield and Serious Sam 2 I believe) Funny they spent time on Vista drives but need work per game here. Nvidia the opposite.

ATI recently released new drivers for the launch too. Wonder if these reviews are using them. I'll have to check.

NDA is still Monday the 14th (not sure if there is a time). These sites probably did not sign an NDA or are breaking their NDA coming out early.

Edit:
Tweaktown had one up but I guess they got hit bad. lol
Took it down.

Techreports review - uses Vista

So far the results are really mixed. They are using an Alpha driver but that doesn't help people make decisions. I'm not looking for a new card any time soon but if I had to buy a card TODAY I would get a GTX. Huge leap in image quality over previous geforce cards. It is about as good as you can get. ATI is on par with that, a little different with their AA modes and flexibility. But without solid 2900XT drivers I'd pick the GTX over the 2900XT. Although the 8800GTS vs 2900XT would be a LOT harder choice for me. It's a good thing there are no DX10 games coming out just yet and my 1900GT is holding in there. Give some time for things to settle down, let Nvidia and ATI improve drivers in games and vista. I do think the ATI card has some good potential though. Have to see how it performs with future drivers and how they can ramp up the chip for future cards.

its a war zone at overclockers uk forums since morning.

The good side is you get performance close to the 8800GTs for ?50-60 more. lol

Nvidia FTW ;)

I would wait it out, except my 1900Gt is artifacting like a mad bitch. :/

After reading some reviews, I'm gonna go with a 8800 640 GTS or GTX, dunno yet. In any case, I'm really disappointed after all this waiting.

Shows performance difference between driver verions.
haha check out the Oblivion graph.
Inbetween the GTX and Ultra with one driver version and below the X1900XTX with the other 2. With all the steam processors and how ATI is using them to render I bet a lot will depend on drivers.

Yeah, I'd probably just pick up a 8800. A lot of manufactures have offered rebate sales with the 8800GTS.

That's what everyone is talking about apparently, the drivers. But how much difference can the drivers make in the end? :/

Drivers can make a phenomenal difference. Chances are the improvement won't be huge, but there's a reason ATI and Nvidia release drivers so often :P

Well normally a card is consistent across the board and driver optimizations for a game might improve performance a few percentage points. But I'm talking about driver bug fixes, not performance enhancing optimizations. It looks like something is causing a large drop in performance when using AA in a few games. If they could fix that then it would bounce right back matching trends with how it performs in other games and other cards.

Example, there was a bug a year or so ago ATI fixed with how video memory was being managed in an ID/OpenGL game and that helped performance with their card a lot.

Based on a few of the write-ups and forum speculation, the way ATI is using the steam processors/shaders and dynamically routing data is more dependent on drivers than their previous cards and the 8800. /shrug

Probably a while yet before ATI gets their stuff together. Like I said before, Nvidia really came through with IQ on the 8800 vs their previous cards. So there is no significant reason to wait for ATI fixes.

I've been doing a lot of thinking and soul searching (lol) since yesterday and I came to this conclusion: since I've waited this long, I'll just tough it out with this crappy GT till the 8900s eventually come out. But I would like your opinion on this decision, Asus, I'd like to know if you think it's a good or bad move. Thanks in advance :)

I know one thing, im extremely happy with my eVGA8800GTS 640mb

I'd wait it out. Unless you REALLY want to play STALKER at max detail, or you have a 24" screen or bigger. You should still be able to play every game perfectly at high detail (except for stalker perhaps), so there's no rush in getting a new one. The 8900 are bound to be interesting, and the 65nm ATI cards are to arrive in a few months.

Yeah I see what you mean, I just play CS:source occasionally these days. I'm also on a 19" limited to 1280*1024. I'll continue the video card fasting for now :)

Just hope that your current card doesn't give out since it is showing artifacts. D:

I know, it's going to be ****ed up when it does because I don't have integrated vid on this mobo lol...
