Will this be the last one or will Half-Life 3 be released? :|

Ask his hands: The hand speaks... the hand of a government man.

Also, yeah... we don't know. Planet Half-Life recently celebrated 10 years of Half-Life by Claiming that Episode Three was the end. It's commonly accepted around these parts that they're wrong. I just can't remember why, either because I'm too keen to believe it's not finishing or because it was refuted by Doug Lombardi so long ago that we don't understand PHL's claim.

edit:
Haven't seen you around before Reflex, but must ask: are you in charge of finding treasure in the dark?

They've said before, not all officially of course, that Episode 3 won't be the end of the adventures of Gordon Freeman. Of course, maybe I'm insane.

I believe that they said it was the end of this story arc, but more is to come for Gordon in the future.

i do believe ive heard this too.
i just hope that the end of the story arc doesnt mean no more alyx

This is the end of the Half-Life 2 Story Arc, but they've said you'll always play Gordon Freeman in a major Half-Life release.

SLIGHT SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED EPISODE 2

Seems like a good place to post this. I just finally finished Ep 2 and have been reading here all the speculation about episode 3. Well my take is, what if Eli's worst fears come true? At the end of episode 3, ANOTHER Black Mesa incident occurs on the Borealis?? Would make for a GREAT cliffhanger to lead into Half Life 3!!!!:D

i doubt they will end it off in episode 3 or at least they will have to make it as long as half life 2 to cover the ground it will take to cover this story arc!! so what is gordon freeman going to kill off the combine i can't see him doing it all on the borealis.

...some guy made it...its beautyful isn´t it...

i wouldnt mind if this were the last one. then valve could work on some other IP.

Who's to say the whole thing will be on board the Borealis?

I'd imagine the game will either be released this christmas or next April. I'd reckon the reason they are taking so long to release media or info is because they are having a tough time to decide whether or not implementing pieces of technology is necessary to supplement a story element, or whether to change a part of story to save on development time and costs (because lets face it, if you wanted a 50kmx50km map to make a helicopter ride more believeable, then you would have to change fundamental elements of the SourceSDK to accomodate editing on that scale)

Probably this. They are also taking their time because Episode Two was probably rushed at least a tiny bit (by Valve standards) because they needed to make the deadline for the Orange Box. Because Episode Three will probably be released as a stand-alone product, they do not have as much pressure to finish it because it doesn't have to be attached to two other products that are also being rushed to meet deadlines.

However, nothing can excuse the (IMO) appalling lack of even a single status update for over a year and a half since the release of the Orange Box. It's gotten past building the suspense and anticipation, and it seems now that a lot of fans are getting irritated and discouraged at the lack of a single bit of new information. I myself am becoming apathetic to Episode Three because of Valve's decision to be completely silent about its progress. I understand that they were unhappy about releasing trailers on Episode Two because certain story elements were changed in the final game, but come on people. A simple "we are working hard, progress is going forward" or something like that would be more than sufficient for me at least.

I am going to forward this paragraph to Gabe himself, and although I doubt I'll get a response, I feel like I owe it to them to let them know how a lot of people feel about this issue.

If you do get a response, tell us.

Please.

PLEASE.

Valve have said countless times Episode 3 is not the last Half-Life and that they have "many more story's to tell"

I'm in agreement with the majority here. I have the same reasons as most people here, but I also found a quote on this site:
Developer Valve said it will be the last episode in the currently planned story arc, but it will not be the end of the Half-Life franchise, so Half-Life 2: Episode 4 or in a way Half-Life 3 might be entirely possible.

Of course, they haven't really backed it up so it's not completely reliable, but it's evidence either way.

i do believe ive heard this too.

I think it might well do, actually. Episode 3 is supposed to end the current story arc, which I take to mean that the transition from HL2 Ep3 to Half-Life 3 will be as big as that from HL1 to HL2. And that was quite a huge transition, I mean the storyline must have advanced nearly 20 years or so, the environment changed completely, the style of the game changed a lot, there was an entirely new enemy to fight... practically everything in HL2 was new. I just don't see how they could begin a whole fresh story arc whilst keeping all these characters who belong to the old one.
If that is the case though (which it might not be), and we do get a whole new set of characters in Half-Life 3, I want to know what happens to the current lot at least. What are they going to do, put Gordon back into stasis and leave Alyx with Barney for "company"? I'd be interesting to speculate on how Gordon departs from the current world. I just hope they don't choose to kill Alyx off, to keep things neat or something.

Maybe Half-Life 3 will be Adrian Shephard! It could be what he was doing through the time Gordon was in the stasis or throughout the Half-Life 2 storyline.

Maybe you're stupid.

Half-Life 3 will be about John Freeman who was Gordon Freemans brother.

I'd be pissed if they just got rid of every single character other than Gordon for HL3.

I agree - at least keep Barney (cause he owes Gordon a beer!), Alyx (Gordon's gotta get some action sometime), and Kleiner (it just isn't Half-Life without Kleiner).

Except Lamarr's in space now (unless Lamarr somehow crashes into the Borealis from the sky, which I could imagine happening).

halflife 3 will come. also kupo cakes video was hunted down by wmg those sneaky bastards!!!

Half-Life Wars is already an RTS mod. Well, actually It's Half-Life 2 Wars, but same difference. It's Resistance versus Combine versus Antlions I think. I've never actually played it. Link.
