err... Homeworld 1? Homeworld Catacylsm? Seems strange you haven't thought to check those out, so I suppose you have. IMO, Homeworld 1 was far better than Homeworld 2 was... the storyline for that game was overblown and the space combat was dull.

I can't imagine that many people would refer to those games as "Space Sims" mind you. Space Sims are more likely games like Freespace, Freelancer, Starlancer... that kind of thing, where you actually have to pilot something, rather than commanding units around. If you're looking for games like Homeworld and Eve... I think they're pretty thin on the ground. I seem to remember there was a game called "haegemonia" that was something like that. Also, the "Imperium Galatica" games were Strategy offerings in space... no much like Homeworld etc, but nevertheless.

i havent played hw1 (i should, i know) and i though hw2 was very good!

well i was refering to pretty much sci-fi space in general, i guess i should have called it that...

the freespace demo was awesome! the nebula fight was spectacular, almost movie like! and it has the coolest explosions ever!

Elite and its sequels, never been beat, only in visual quality.

My brother was playing one of the elite games a few weeks ago...It brought back so many memories. Though, I was too young to really get into it properly first time around. The way the games were done just seems like pure genius even now.

heh yeah, even looking so basic, elite is still tons of fun and just had something about it that hasn't been captured since, though i really liked frontier i must admit.

damn i love the theme :)

Yeah, Elite. I still can't get over the seamless transitions between planets and space, it totally blows me away even today.

And like lePobz said, X2. I guess a pretty decent learning curve but it's great once you get into it and overlook things like the crappy cutscenes. You don't even have to follow the story if you don't want to.

ive heard lots of great things about elite, is it free to download?

If you enjoyed the freespace demo the full version is legaly free. Unfortunatley if you thaught steam was a pain in the ass this will have you ripping your hair out.

You can download it at this site http://www.the-underdogs.org/

To upgrade to the full version you need to find the vp files

sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
tangoX_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp

Someone is hosting them on the eDonky, gnutella, and gnutella2 networks.

after that you can download FS2_open and the media VP's to bring your PC to it's knees.

yep, elite, frontier, first encounters are all free to download (not abandonware, the makers just made them free to download)

you can get elite however, on just about ANY computer or console you can think of, I think it held the record at some point for being the only game to be converted to every format.

can even play elite on java (I was yesterday hehe)

No one mentioned the Wing Commander series yet? not even Privateer?

wing commander was ok, i only ever got to play it early on, on an Amiga, it was slow.

Ohhh, X-wing vs Tie Fighter, X-wing alliance, another couple of greats.

This is kind of off-topic, but I'd personally recommend Archemedian Dynasty. It was basically a space-sim. but underwater. You pilot a submarine (which may as well be a space-fighter) and shoot at... well, other submarines and a few turrets and generators. Its probably my favorite "game that no-one ever played" as it had a pretty good story and such. Strangely, it recieved a mix of bad (60% and lower) reviews and some pretty shining reviews (90%+).

There are two sequels (the Aquanox games) but all you really need to know about them is that the suck a huge one. Graphics were nice with all the super-shiney wibbly wobbly underwater effects you'd want, but the voice acting and just the general story were awful. Oh and the gameplay was dull, unvaried and basically like playing a FPS with the "fly" cheat on.

The truest sequel to the Elite series was Wing Commander: Privateer, you also have the sequel to that, Privateer 2, but that wasn't as good. Wing Commander 3, 4, and Prophecy were all pretty amazing as well, especially 3 and 4.

There was a game like that that Microsoft published, i remember the trailer on a Windows 98 disk, i think, looked pretty good. Aliens invaded Earth and the remaining Earthlings were fighting them underwater.

Freelancer and starlancer are also really good, starlancer is totally linear, but what it offers it offers very good, it has a good story and really good controls, looks incredibly!!!!! good for such a old game.
Freelancer is by far my favoriete, it is pretty open, has a nice stroy but that is nothing compared to the multiplayer aspect which is really fun and makes this the best space sim. You can from a pirat clan and raid cargo ships in space or you can go and trade yourself, while your friends go with you as yoyr escorts, bith don't even coem close storywise to freespace2 but the gameplay is very good.

has anyone got a different link to freespace 2 other than the underdogs?

it has a bandwidth of 5.6k avarage, and when it finaly downloaded, it was corrupted!

I am a big Freelancer-fan as well. Some people find it too simple but I found it just right. X2 reaks imo.

Descent Freespace 2 & it's expansion [The Great War].

Other than that, X-2: The Threat, Freelancer and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.

I-WAR 1 DAMMIT. Get it on E-Bay, or find it on an abandonware site.

wing commander has absolutely nothing in common with Elite, Elite was a trading game for a start. wing commander wishes it could have been remembered as fondly as elite, they all do.

I can heartily recommend the Battlecruiser/Ultimate Combat series of games...

.....if you need something to rest your drink on.

Privateer was a trading game, and i would still say that it is one of the truest sequels (interms of what the game actually did) to the Elite series. Anyone who hasn't play Privateer needs to play it, as it is one of the best space games ever made, bar none. And Wing Commander is remembered as fondly as Elite is.

wing commander is remembered as a game that could have been. It's certainly not on the same level as Elite. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, it just wasn't as good, it did look nicer I admit. I remember going out and getting the AGA version of it (256 color version on the amiga yay!) and it looked much nicer, not as blocky too since it was using the sprite method rather than 3D geometry, which i did think was a neat idea at the time.

I'm sure its not as bad as you make out :D. I remember always wanting that game, now that was one that was hailed at the time as a possible elite beater. One of these days I'll get around to finding it and trying it out :)

Now I-War was great fun. Very pretty looking too.. I don't think its abandonware just yet though.

I loved I War as well and Tachyon: The Fringe.

Bear in mind that I worked for 3000AD. Believe me when I say they suck. They suck more than a black hole full of Dysons. Vast, huge, all-encompassing suckage.

You know that Dr Smart guy blamed everything on the publisher and tried to sort it out and change the game to how he wanted it in the updates?

Yeah. He's done that at least twice now. It speaks volumes about the way he conducts his business...

What always amused me about the guy and found quite odd is that he would have kind of a radar system built into his internet connection, if the radar picked up anyone on the internet, no matter what the site is, talking about him in a bad way, he would suddenly show up out of the blue to put things right. Seen that happen a couple of times, you've never seen him before, you'll never see him again, but for a couple of days, he'll be there putting everything right about him and his games.

Derek Smart!

He showed huge interest in buying the Freespace franchise when Interplay was basically having a title license yard sale. Thank GOD he didn't get it (that I know of)

I'd rather another one NOT be made than him ruin it.

When he made a thread on whether he should buy it or not, the people at HLP (Hard Light Productions, the largest, pretty professional, full of SKILLED people, FS community still largely active today) contacted him and stuff, and he brushed them off as "piddley fans and small modders" even though they undertook the Source Code project and basically MADE what can be though of as Freespace 2.5 :P
