Well I just gotta say I really underestimated my Usambar baboon spider last night. One of the mice I was getting ready to feed to one of my snakes jumped into the spider cage by accident, and got bit right in the face. Started jumping around like it was being electrocuted. while jumping around it got bit a second time. After about a minute it just layed on the ground twitching its legs. After another minute it stopped breathing all together and died. Makes me really not wanna get bit by this thing, just thought I'd share my happy story with everyone:D

I'm now scared of your spider immensely.

Why would you have that as a pet? *shudders*

What a stupid pet.

Keep the mouse, burn the spider.

Oops title should say last night. Oh well. And yes, all spider bites are venomous. Spiders kick ass :D

I mean I'm really interested in getting a spider when I could, but isn't it preferable to have a safe one?

Your spider's bites are poisonous?

It wasn't a spider. I put my special filter on, and it turned out the mouse was victim to his super powered electro dog of death. A dog that has been bred for it's electric-commanding powers and vicious bite. It's teeth are made from tungsten carbide, it eats raw ostrich eggs and it's bark is louder than 20 million plane guns (747s that are guns).

I smell... irony.

What I was asking should have been something like "what kind of spider do you own?".

Well yes, but I don't hadle my spiders at all really, and I'm fairly experienced with them. I just picked it because theyre nice looking and easy to keep. For the most part theres no reason to even be in a position where it can escape. Unless youre allergic to the venom, there are very few spiders that could kill you, none that are sold as "pets". Some of them could put the hurt down pretty bad though...getting bit by a large spider is bad news really, no matter what species it is.

Do you have pictures of yours? What specie is it?

Hmmm I would be more inclined to call it an ornament, rather than a pet.

That is completely awesome. I used to have a wild caught scorpion but she had about two hundred babies so I let her go while they where still chilling on her back.

Good point lol, never thought about it that way

Its a Usambar baboon spider, don't have a pic, but I'm sure you could find one on google, I'll see if I can get one and post it

It eats whole mice? How big is this thing?

oh no, the mouse just jumped in there by accident when the cage was open (its got a hatch on the top, and the spider cant climb the lid so it cant escape) and got bit up

I have seen one of the goliath birdeaters someone had a while back, and it did eat mice. the things body was probably bigger than your whole hand, thats not including the legs. It was too big to eat anything other than small rodents...

I watched something on the amazon species hunt once and they found a spider which is a relative of the goliath birdeater, but had a slightly different apetite...for chickens. Think how big that spider would be to eat chickens. Dinner plate sized body with huge long legs. I don't have a problem with spiders, i just wouldn't like to meet that!

That would be quite the thing to run across in the wild. There actaully is a spider bigger than the birdeater, the goliath pinkfoot, a close relative. Not sure if this is the spider they were talking about on that show, but I wouldn't doubt for a second there are bigger ones out there. I mean, hell, the Giant Galapagos centipede has been recorded at 2 feet long. That is a HUGE effin centipede. The island is protected though, so no one has really been able to study them, so theres no telling how big they can really get. I dont see them going extinct anytime soon though, they can pretty much eat/kill/seriously hurt any of the introduced species on the islands.:rolling:

Kick. Ass.

Agreed:cheers:

Makes me wanna go out and get a birdeater (the pet store I work at has one, and I could get it for dirt cheap too, hmmm:E )

hahaha omg the mouse got so pwned, i thought the spider was slow cuz it was just like standing there but then it like gripped him so fast it was crazy, that spider is a frekin beast.

Why would you willingly work at a pet shop? I've never actually seen a pet shop myself.

That mouse was just looking around and the friggen spider ate him.

Makes me glad that I'm bigger than a mouse. And at the top of the food chain.

Lol, that mouse is a bit stupid though, gets pounced on once and then it goes back for more.

Do you think human fear of spiders stems from the days when our ancestors were threatened by this kind of thing?

does anyone know why those types of video never work for me? the video screen is just black with the windows media logo in the middle, and none of the buttons are clickable.

I really wanna watch the damn thing!

Spiders are amazing creatures. I'd love them if i didn't hate them. My moms fault... When i was young she would scream and be all scared when there was a spiders, so naturally, i became scared of them too. -_-

But your spider is nice, though i wouldnt keep one.

The reason most people are afraid of anything like that (spiders, snakes, etc.) is learned. Most kids are taught spiders = bad. Hell I could teach a kid to be afraid of pencils if I wanted. If we were afraid of anything that ever preyed on out ancestors, well we'd be afraid of a hell of a lot I say.

That video reminds me of the friend that feeds his spider mice, except his spider is over twice that size. Most people think he's feeding a snake or something, until they see those spider legs come stretching out of the ground...

btw I made up my mind, I'm getting the birdeater sometime this week :D
